Lieutenant Eve Dallas must keep the predator from becoming the prey in Vendetta in Death, the newest thriller from the #1 New York Times bestselling author J.D. Robb. She calls herself Lady Justice. And once she has chosen a man as her target, she turns herself into a tall blonde or a curvaceous redhead, makes herself as alluring and seductive as possible to them. Once they are in her grasp, they … Once they are in her grasp, they are powerless.
The first victim is wealthy businessman Nigel McEnroy. His company’s human resources department has already paid out settlements to a couple of his young victims–but they don’t know that his crimes go far beyond workplace harassment. Lady Justice knows. And in one shocking night of brutality, she makes him pay a much steeper price.
Now Eve Dallas and her husband, Roarke, are combing through the evidence of McEnroy’s secret life. His compulsive need to record his misdeeds provides them with a wide range of suspects, but the true identity of Lady Justice remains elusive. It’s a challenging case, made even more difficult by McEnroy’s widow, who reacts to the investigation with fury, denial, and threats. Meanwhile, Lady Justice’s criminal crusade is escalating rapidly, and if Eve can’t stop this vigilante, there’s no telling how much blood may be spilled…

In Death Series…. another good read!
I love the main characters in this seriesl
The exciting & edge of your seat future mystery of J. D. Robb will make you lose sleep. Eve Dallas has another case, with bodies piling up, with her loving husband, Roarke by her side every step of the way and able body partner Peabody always there too. I love reading this series. Every book is another adventure into the life of Eve with her personal life & work life. All the usual characters are there, along with a few new ones. I highly recommend this book.
VENDETTA in DEATH by J.D. Robb is the 49th book in the In Death Series featuring Lieutenant Eve Dallas. I have read all of them and continue to be thoroughly entertained by this series. The novels are police procedurals with this one set in 2061 so they have some technologies that don’t exist today, but that is a minor aspect compared to the mystery and suspense contained in each novel.
The story takes place in New York City and the female protagonist is homicide lieutenant Eve Dallas. The first victim is a wealthy businessman known for sexual harassment in the workplace. A note on his body is Lady Justice. Soon, additional bodies show up. All have an attached poem signed by Lady Justice. All have a similar cause of death. What do the men have in common? How is Lady Justice identifying them? Who is Lady Justice?
It is always entertaining to spend time with Eve and Roarke as well as their friends and Eve’s colleagues. Roarke and Peabody play bigger roles in this novel than they did in the previous book in the series.
The characters are compelling and three-dimensional. It seemed that Eve had even more depth in this book. The goals of both the protagonist and the antagonist were clear and proactive with well-drawn emotion. The secondary characters were well-rounded and enhanced the story. The prose is well-written, entertaining, and engaging The plot is interesting, thought-provoking and intense. My one quibble with this book is that there were not enough twists and turns. The killer was identified half-way through the book. However, the author did a great job in emphasizing the path to getting enough evidence for a warrant. After all, this is a police procedural.
For those not familiar with this series, it is best read in order due to the backstories of the main and secondary characters. There is generally some language and violence as well as a steamy scene or two. Additionally, there is humor. In this one, a variety of humorous incidents occurred. One involved ties and socks, another was with Bella, and a third came from a request from Mavis. Overall, I recommend this series to those that enjoy police procedurals with some romance. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I have to confess – I have never read any of the “In Death” books – which is something I’m going to rectify immediately. This is book number forty-nine in the series. Because of that, there is a lot of background that I was missing. And because of that, I had a a little trouble “getting” some of the character dynamics. But that doesn’t mean I didn’t enjoy it. I knew “whodunnit” by the middle of the book, but it was still nice to see how the story played out.
What I liked: The “futuristic” aspect of the story was fun with androids and (I assume) flying cars. I loved Roarke – Eve’s husband – and their couple dynamic. The scene around page 215 with them talking about childbirth was hilarious – as in Eve would rather face a serial killer than go through that.
What I didn’t like: as mentioned above, I hadn’t read any of the previous books so the character dynamics didn’t work well because I had no idea who they were and what had happened in the past. But there were enough clues to let me know a little.
Recommendation: If you’ve read others in the series, definitely pick this one up! It’s deep and dark and thrilling with a satisfying ending. If you haven’t read any, I suggest you start with earlier ones. You can read this and enjoy it, but without the background, you won’t get the full Eve Dallas experience.
Thanks to the publisher for providing this book.
This book has a lot about rape and abuse. Although I don’t enjoy reading about it I’m glad society has come a long ways. It still has a long ways to go. There is also the battle between what is the right punishment. There is also the big push that every victim desires Eve’s best no matter what they have done in their lives. Not a light read. Writing, audio and characters are excellent.
Classic JD Robb. Eve Dallas is worth suspending disbelief for. Always a wild ride. She could leave Roarke and Dallas’s sex life to our imaginations though. It reads like an adolescent fantasy.
I really enjoy any book by J.D. Robb.
JD Robb never misses in her “In Death” series. I love them!!
Eve is a detective by the book she does not believe in vengeance all her victims have her to bring their murderers to justice. In this 49th story she is pitted against a murderer who believes they have right on their side and they can even out think the great Detective Eve Dallas. This is very engrossing in following Eve’s pain staking following of the clues and using her instincts to flush out the suspect. With the help of great characters like Peabody (who will put her ass on the line for her partner). You always come away routing for Eve not your usual heroine but who has something about her that you relate to.
Definitely my favorite author!
As usual, J D Robb nails it in her death series. Love these books
Book 49 and I still love this series just as much after I read the first book.
Vendetta in Death was fast-paced and action -packed from the very beginning to the very end. Eve, Peabody and all the gang are chasing a serial killer, one with a pointed message…
Eve was on a race to find the killer before more bodies drop and even though she is super smart and pretty much knows who the killer is proving it is another thing entirely.
I seriously love that this series is set in the not so distant future, I love how Eve and her team work as a well oiled machine and I just have to say it I seriously love Eve and her tough as nails persona with her occasional soft side that springs to life when you least expect it. And Roarke he is a ruthless business man a loving and possessive man who also has an occasional soft side they both seem to ground and compliment each other and they have grown to work together and support each other.
Piecing this one together is going to be chilling to the end.
Best. Author
This is the best series! Love the growing relationships of many of the characters.
JD Robb is my favorite author!
There is just something about the In-Death series that I love. They are fast paced, easy to read and have some kick ass characters. Vendetta in Death (#49) was no different. Here we see out hero, Eve Dallas and hunky husband, Roarke take on the challenge of catching a killer who is targeting men. But not everything is what it seems and Eve, Roarke and the rest of the gang; Peabody, McNab and Feeney are players in a game of chess to try and catch the killer and bring them to justice.
What I really like about these characters is that they are trying to balance their everyday lives with their work lives and like most people there is some overlap. There is a particular part in the book where Eve is speaking to Mavis and it really resonates with how sweet it is in a time of turmoil. (Eve and Roarke’s lives seem pretty hectic and turmoil seems to be quite normal). Eve is an amazingly strong character with a lot of sass and it is really great to read about her and Roarke’s journey through her eyes as a police officer and his as a reformed criminal.
This book is fast-paced and you do get to see through the killer’s eyes and feel a little bit of sympathy for them, even though they are bat-poo crazy! There is definitely a fine line here when it comes to justice and it will be interesting to see if people sympathise with the killer or their victims in this one (a talking point that I’m sure J. D. Robb put in there for a reason). If you like crimes novels, set in the future with some amazing characters, great story-lines and spider web stories, then this one is for you. A great read!

I don’t know how she can just keep getting better and better. I love all the relationships and the mystery. I look forward to each one.
J.D.Robb books are one of favorite series, they follow a pattern but you are swept up and enjoying it too much to care. I prefer to read them in order but I am sure that the story will carry you without the others.
I enjoy this Series very much, this book is true to the flow of the series. There were a number of twists and turns.
I love the characters in this series. I am totally invested in seeing how they continue to grow. Wonderful series.
