Lance and June were best friends growing up then suddenly they weren’t. June has felt the loss of the boy next door who had her heart. I could tell from Lance’s moodiness that something was not right and he seemed so conflicted. I couldn’t put this book down until I found out what happened and how it all turned out. June had a great BFF in Abby she always had her back. Lance’s BFF turned out to be a good friend to June also.
I could not be more in love with this book if I tried this story this is why I read YA books.
June could be me going through my awkward stage growing into your body as well as your personality. Lucas her one time friend now for reasons not known he is her nemesis. Abby the best friend who pushes her to enjoy her senior year. Tory the joker of the pack he is Lucas’s best friend but quickly becomes unexpectedly an important part of June’s life. Every single charcacter will push your buttons, you will like some and hate others and find yourself judging their actions. I loved that the adults have a story within this love story and it runs alongside it with no problems. This really was a book of self discovery for June. Her low self-esteem issues are something that she slowly has to overcome and watching her grow and accept herself was a fufilling part of the story. I loved Lucas even when he was being an idiot because the reader can see what June can’t that he is hiding something.
I haven’t willed happiness on a couple quite as much as I did with June and Lucas and although we end on a HFN I hope we get to see them at a later date and together.
Ginger Scott the Queen of YA has done it again, this fantastic new sports romance got me from the start, enemies to lover story between Lucas and June, is compelling, full of chemistry, you don’t want to get to the end because you know you need more. You will ride a story full of emotions, such a sweet and fantastic new series, can’t wait for the next one I need Tory’s story now. I’m sure this story will captivate you as much as it did me, a fantastic 5 star read, would love to hear the audiobook when available.
Wow. Lucas and June were…. unexpected?
No, that’s not the right word – yet it seems to fit.
Like many things I found in this book, what I saw at first glance was not the full story.
At the risk of giving spoilers I’m just going to leave it at that – but also add: I really, really liked it. I am fully invested in this series now and NEED Abby and Tory’s story!
4.5 stars
I really enjoyed this.
I’m already a sucker for sports romances. Add in some teen angst, secrets, a childhood friendship gone south and trying to reconnect with your first love, then you pretty much got me hooked.
The story between June and Lucas is complicated. It stays complicated for a while.
I’m already SUPER excited for book 2.
I received an ARC of this for review. My opinions are my own and haven’t been influenced.
Ginger Scott knows how to do YA romance! Varsity Heartbreak is a heart. June and Lucas were the best of friends until one day they weren’t. June never understood why one day he just no longer talked to her. Now she’s back two years later and can feel the hatred rolling off him. Varsity Heartbreak is a story of old friends and new love. Varsity Heartbreak was a fantastic start to the Varsity series. Lucas and June were fantastic, Abby and Tory were amazing side characters that added so much to the story. Scott delivered a fantastic plot that was well written.
I compare every Ginger Scott book to The Waiting Series which is completely unfair but just how it is. And honestly that is the only reason Varsity Heartbreak is getting 4 stars instead of 5.
One thing you know your going to get when you pick up a ginger Scott book , is book full of heart , ,and this book really does leave your heart full.
Lucas and june best friends as kids always together until they weren’t , one day that changed everything was the last day that Lucas spoke to june and she never understood why.
This is a fantastic YA/NA story done in brilliant ginger style with characters you’ll love especially Tory he kinda stole it for me I adore him…a storyline that keeps you engaged with just enough angst a thoroughly enjoyable read and I’m looking forward to more.
Disclaimer: I received an Advance Reader Copy at no cost from the publisher/author. All opinions in my review are my own.
This book absolutely blew me away. I was captivated by this book from the first page. Ginger Scott is a new author for me and I was so impressed with this book.
First of all, the storytelling is brilliant. I fell in love with it immediately. The natural storytelling is so inviting. The author really has a knack for pulling the reader into the story. The plotting of the story was excellent. There were amazing plot twists and such suspense. I was like an addict with this story because I could not get enough.
I straight-up loved these characters. I loved getting to know them. June is such a likable and relatable character. I fell right into her orbit from the get-go. I loved how mysterious Lucas’s character was. It was obvious that there was a lot more underneath the surface with his character. I loved how the reader gradually gets pieces of him along the way. I loved how much depth these characters had. They had really great character development. This book also has a wonderful cast of secondary characters that really add depth to the story. I loved the representation of both friendship and family that was found in this book.
The romance in this book was tantalizing. June and Lucas had such intense chemistry that you could feel under your skin. This was such a gripping slow-burn romance. Some of my favorite tropes that I love were at work here – enemies-to-lovers and childhood friends. I really loved the evolution of the romance. There was plenty of angst and raw emotions.
Overall, this is a very emotional love story that will make you have all the feels. I was absolutely obsessed with this story from start to finish. I’ve definitely found a new author to stalk and I can’t wait for the next two books in this series!
Oh, for the love of an angsty YA romance! Ginger Scott has done it again with her latest novel, Varsity Heartbreaker. It’s amazing how her love of sports shines through her novels in such a way as to draw in even the most stubborn sports non-enthusiast.
Ms. Scott returns to her roots as a YA romance novelist. In Varsity Heartbreaker she gives her readers a lot of angst, a little sports, and much to smile about. Her writing is a pleasure to read. The plot flows nicely, the dialogue is authentic, and her characters are realistically portrayed. The main characters, Lucas and June are far from perfect. Lucas seems like a golden boy; he’s a winning QB with a bright future. He’s the one-time best friend and next-door neighbor who now scowls and torments June. June wears a dark cloud over her head like Eeyore; she has one heartbreak after another, and she has come to expect nothing more than that from her life. For me, it took a twist in the story to find reasons to get behind these two characters. June’s mom, her best friend, Abby, and another classmate, Tory, bring much to the story. In fact, June’s mom is the standout character who I was most intrigued about.
Ms. Scott plays June and Lucas’ push-pull relationship well. The stolen glances turn into sneers when caught. The discovered secret becomes a potential weapon. The observed interaction becomes a source of concern. Their teenaged hormones, wants, desires, and hurts are all over the place. Even the parent-teen dynamic is fantastically portrayed; it is a balanced depiction without stereotypes or caricatures. June’s growth through her senior year of high school is heartwarming. From the first day of school to her graduation is quite the transformation. The story started with despair and ends with love and hope for the future.
Varsity Heartbreaker is a wonderfully-angsty start to the Varsity series. Ginger Scott gives us a great couple in Lucas Fuller and June Mabee, both strong-willed and both experiencing a world of hurt as they enter their senior year of high school. These former best friends grabbed my attention right from the start with their two years long separation making their young lives more difficult than it seemingly needs to be. The fact that not all is what it seems in this feud between not only these next door neighbors but their families as well, I just knew that I was in for one potent ride. And happily, I wasn’t wrong.
I love the way Scott writes these YA/NA books. Yes, June and Lucas are only 17/18 but they exhibit a maturity that I appreciate and don’t often get from other authors. There is so much at play with the reasons why Lucas suddenly stopped being June’s friend, especially when she needed him most, and the way it all transpires kept me fully invested in their story. The pressure Lucas has from his distant father, paired with the fact that Mr. Fuller’s misdeeds become more than anyone ever imagined, gave this story a mountain of emotion I devoured with every turn of the page.
There are numerous secrets and miscommunication that almost tear June apart more than once. But her perseverance made me stand up and notice. I really adore her and the way she finally decides to enjoy her last year of school despite the agonizing love she never forgot for the boy next door. Together with her bestie, Abby, by her side and the surprise friendship she forges with the unpredictable Tory, I was proud of her and how she handled everything that was thrown at her.
June’s mom proves to be another force of nature and I’ll just say the way she became the reason why this does in fact have one heck of a happy ending, had me cheering like crazy. This book features truly incredible characters and they each provide the perfect touch at the right time. This is a wonderful crew who look out for each other and weather a wild storm none of them saw coming. The dialogue is smart and relevant and it made the story that much more authentic, again something Scott masterfully delivers.
What else can I add except that I loved every word, am looking forward to the next book and happily give Varsity Heartbreaker a huge 5 stars!
4.5 Heartbreaker Stars! I absolutely loved June! Broody antihero Lucas and his chemistry with June is palpable from the beginning. The angst is real in this friends to enemies to lovers storyline. The supporting cast is just as interesting as the main characters and adds to the story. Ginger Scott writes fantastic YA storyline and it’s so easy to get lost in the journey and sad when it ends. I can’t wait to read the next one in this series. I highly recommend this book.
It’s definitely heartbreaking knowing what I know now. A friendship ruined. Hearts broken. And for what!?!
Being bullied. Being treated so poorly. I can completely sympathize with June’s decision to switch schools. I can understand running from the pain of losing her person but I truly wish she had had the courage to approach him sooner.
All the pain, heartache, and suffering….for naught. Of course then Ginger Scott wouldn’t have had a story…
I love young love. I revel in the ups, downs, and the drama. Ginger Scott gave me a chanceto experience it all and gave me something to look forward to. I am eager for more Varsity stories.
3.5 stars
This book had everything you could want in a High school romance. You have the sexy football star, boy next door. You have the quintessential geek who doe snot fit in with the “in” crowd. You have the sassy, no holds barred best friend and you have the boy who uses humor to make his and everyone else’s lives better. What I did not expect was the levels of lies and deception that wrap around the families at the center of the storyline. I also did not expect not only awesome head characters but lovable and relatable sub-characters that need their own story next. This is my first book by Ginger Scott and it will not be my last!!
