I’ve been craving a young adult romance and reading Varsity Heartbreaker by Ginger Scott really hit the spot! Varsity Heartbreaker is a young adult, high school romance. There are some enemy vibes, but nothing close to bullying. There is also a second chance, childhood friends to lover’s vibe, but we never really “get this” until closer to the end when the reason for their parting is revealed. This is also a sweet, somewhat sexual (only a few small parts) romance and would be perfect for both adults and upper young adult readers.
June and Lucas were childhood friends, but two years ago he stopped talking to her and ignored her every time she tried to find out why he started hating her. So, she left school for a year and when to a local Montessori school. Unfortunately, after her mother’s divorce she couldn’t afford to go there any longer and had to go back to school where Lucas and some bullies from her past are. It’s not an easy transition for June, and things are pretty touch and go for a while but befriending the right people (I loved Tory) has helped her in ways she never expected. In this budding friendship, things between her and Lucas start to spark up again. But when she finds out WHY he ghosted her, it just may change everything…
I loved this “twist” as to why Lucas ignored her, even though the lack of communication brought them both from so much heartbreak. I guess it wouldn’t be a story without it though, right? June and Lucas are great characters. I think many readers will love them even if they can’t connect with them on deep levels because they are so young. You may relate to some of their issues though which is why I think both older teens and adults can enjoy this one.
So, would I recommend it? YES! I can’t wait for Tory and Addie’s story next. Their bickering in the background really sets us up for their story and I can’t wait to see how these two come together!
This book was full of so many current issues that young people experience.
I loved the angst and the emotional pull I felt to each and every character.
The struggles of being a social outcast, unpopular, not cool or not cool enough -they’re all touched on so well in the story along with the trials and tribulations of how to fit in and find that person that is happy to let you be who you need to be!
I adored the characters, Lucas and June, in this novel and I particularly loved Tori!
Tori was the epitome of the perfect secondary character – ever!
He brought such a relatable feeling to the story and added so much depth to the emotions and feelings June was going through whilst still having his boys back!
I loved the way there was no need to flash back and fourth between the past and the present – the connection and history between June and Lucas was written so well that it was a seamless transition in explaining and understanding what they had prior and what they are faced with now.
I absolutely adored this story and was so upset when I it ended. I love a story when you are left craving more than what you get – always wanted just another taste of the happy ever after you were given!
I couldn’t recommend this book more and I am on tender-hooks for the next book(s) to start emerging about the characters we got to meet in Varsity Heartbreaker!
5 stars and then some!!!

Varsity Heartbreaker is book one in the Varsity series by Ginger Scott. And what a book series starter it is!!! Scott does not hold out on any punches with this book opener. With all the little details and the story twist blew me away.
High School romance, next-door neighbors, first crush, first heartbreak, family secrets, evil girl lurking and so much more make this story what it is. What I also enjoyed reading this story it was not that heavy story. It is just a story of a boy and girl and all the complications of life around them, but with that little spice to it.
June returns to her public high school after two years in a private school. Life as a freshman was terrible and now returning as a senior, what could possibly go wrong? First of the year, first party of the year, its time to step up and grow up or run and cower in the corner. But June has had enough and finding her footing on rocky gravel isn’t so easy for her. But having a friend like Abby can only push you along. And along a bumpy road is what happens for June.
Great word building. AMazing character connections and a sense of humor throughout. Great Story and I can’t wait for Abby’s story next.
I would love a story about June’s mom, this women is just awesome and deserves her story to be written (wink wink, please).
This is by far the most amazing book I’ve read in 2020!! Miss Scott scored a touchdown with this book!!!! holy agsnt! I couldn’t put it down, June and Lucas were everything I needed and more, I can’t wait to see what else comes from this series!
Teenage heart throbbing mess
I really enjoyed this first installment to the varsity series! It’s a mixture of enemies to lovers/ friends to lovers/ second chance type new adult /young adult romance.
June and Lucas are seniors in high school (18ish) they grew up as neighbors and best friends but 2 years ago their friendship came to a halt and June never knew why. She left her school due to bullying but has returned as her mum can no longer afford to pay the fees .
Lucas is completely cold to her , and true to their age they are nasty to each other, until .. well you’ll have to read it find out haha
There is quite a lot of teenage misunderstanding , angst and “mistakes” made ; and some strong friendships formed – the side characters in this story are really great !! – June and Lucas have a great bond that we see only grow as the book goes on and their chemistry is strong.
The book Is written solely in June’s perspective and I think the only thing that could have made this book better would be having some of Lucas’s POV as well. I think it would have given an extra depth to the strong feelings that were floating around .
despite this though again , Ginger created a wonderful world that I got completely lost in and can’t wait to read more of .
This is the first new adult book I’ve read in a while that was set in high school. I’ve been reading a lot of college romance recently and this one being set in high school really threw me. I feel so old, I have kids this age.
That said Ginger’s writing made me get over that pretty quickly and just focus on the feeling of new love. Because really it doesn’t matter your age when everything is new the feelings are pretty similar. There’s the nerves and the second guessing of what the other person is feeling and thinking.
For June that was even more intense since she had loved Lucas her entire life. He had been her best friend until her world fell apart and she lost him but didn’t know why. She had so many unresolved questions only he could answer and he was being such a massive dick. There were a lot of times i didn’t understand how she still cared so much about him when he went out of his way to avoid her.
Since this was only told in June’s point of view I really struggled with where Lucas was coming from. And I have to be honest I’m not entirely sure what the major catalyst for him to change his behaviour towards June was. One minute he was avoiding her and acting as though she had peed in his cheerios and the next he was this awesome boyfriend.
But then the big reveal happened and it made more sense. It still made me want to smack him in the head but I had to remember his age and I understood his thought process a little better. Although I personally wanted a lot more from the ending. Idk maybe like another books worth of Lucas being a doting, adoring boyfriend where they live happily ever after. I’m hoping that the next book will have a little more of June and Lucas. Either way I loved Tory and Abby as secondary characters and I’m dying to get their story.
This was my first book by Ginger Scott and it will not be my last, when I saw the cover I was very intrigued. This book was about two teenagers who loved each other, yet over a misunderstanding and a lie they take different paths in life.
June was amazing, I loved how dedicated and strong she was, she never gave up and she just kept walking with her head held up high. No matter how cruel people were to her, she didn’t let that change who she was or dictate her life. Lucas was this bad boy who deep down had a big heart. I just wished June would’ve made Lucas work for her forgiveness. This book was very cute, I loved the friendship and love that it had.
There was passion, emotion, and development. You really felt the uncertainty coming from Lucas and June, but somewhere along that uncertainty there become a sense of comfort and love between these two as they navigate through their lost friendship and newfound feelings for one another. Intense and passionate story line that had me on my toes the wholw time to see what they’d do next! What would Lucas do? Where would he go? What would he chose? Does June ever forgive him? It’s an awesome story of grappling teen romance that leaves you rooting for them in the end!
I would dare say this is my favorite read of 2020! I absolutely loved this book! I couldn’t put it down! High school love at its best! Childhood best friends, then enemies in high school. When June has to come back to public school she knows their paths will cross…..the one boy she has always loved. This book has all the feels! You will love June and Lucas!
Ginger Scott delivers a fabulous high school romance in Varsity Heartbreaker! I loved Luke and June’s story. I love the realness of the teenage issues that occur. I loved Abby and June’s friendship.
Lucas was complex and when it came out why he was the way with June… I fell in love with him!
This book is a great reminder about being honest and open with your feelings! Amazing book Ginger Scott!!
Okay, I love Ginger Scott’s books but this one really surprised me. I loved it so much. I miss reading books like this. Varsity Heartbreaker was just so much fun to read.
I loved the characters and the story, the teenage angst. Ugh, and I am definitely a sucker for every trope that is in this book.
I couldn’t put it down. I loved these two. The angst between Lucas and June is on point. Loved Lucas, and June is amazing. I also really enjoyed that even though this is their book, it wasn’t just centered around these two. I really like all of the friendships, and Junes relationship with her mom. Her mom is most definitely a badass.
There is most definitely angst and some drama going on, but it was just so much fun to read. That’s something I wasnt really expecting. It was a really easy read to get lost in. I loved getting to disappear into this book. I know it’s not planned but I would not say no to more Lucas and June. I could read a whole series about these two!
There’s just something about the way Ginger writes her characters and her stories, it just sucks you right into the story. I loved Varsity Heartbreaker. It’s the perfect romance to read right now, while we are so close to summer.
I’m excited for the future books in this series.

This was a fantastic friends to enemies to lovers story. I loved June and how she grew in herself with dealing with her feelings about Lucas and their situation which she didn’t really understand as to why it happened.
I really enjoyed the slowburn of them rekindling their friendship again.
Tory was a pleasant surprise whom I loved too. A fabulous start to a series!!
Expect all the angst of YA romance. Expect all the beauty and swoon of young love. And since it’s Ginger Scott, expect your heart to be beaten and bruised with breathtaking emotions.
Lucas and June used to be neighbours and best friends. Suddenly Lucas became the popular jock and June remained the odd shy and weirdly adorable girl. She is not over her crush and so Lucas’ change kills her daily. She has a complicated life full of daily struggles. And she misses her best friend. What did really happen? Are two families hiding some secrets from them?
I absolutely LOVE June. What an amazing girl! She is not a popular one with all the diva tendencies. She is down to earth and honest and hard working and the most dedicated friend you can have. She has a lot of awkward moments and I can absolutely relate to her! But she also has a sassy and fierce side that is awe inspiring. She literally carries the world on her tiny shoulder. She is a regular messed up, confused and emotional teenager but somehow she is mature beyond her age. Lucas is the dream boy we all wanted in school. Sexy, charming, little bit arrogant and with a dark heart like his dark dress. Everyone thinks he has a perfect shiny life. But he carries a lot of anger and pain inside. Their chemistry is all consuming. It’s just electrifying and undeniably epic! They went from best friends to enemies to lovers and it was an extraordinary ride!
Ginger Scott unleashed her powerful writing in Varsity Heartbreaker and it never fails to give me all the feels! A must read YA sports romance!
Received ARC for honest review
Ginger Scott comes through with another amazing, new adult novel. From friends to enemies to lovers this story takes you through a gambit of emotions, loyalty, friendship and betrayal. The story is packed with action and passion with Scott’s acute sensibility to the vulnerabilities and nuances of young adults. It’s nostalgic to read a book like this, to remember fondly this time period in your life and reflect on the emotionally turbulent intricacies.
The two main characters here are fighting demons, their own and each others. They take on a lot for the young shoulders and feel a heady sense of respect, need, and loyalty. The secondary characters are equally as important and lend a certain camaraderie to the ongoing, engaging plot. I found myself completely indulged by the story and what will happen next. Ginger Scott writes with a certain flair that always leaves you satisfied and knowing greater things are on the horizon for her characters. If you love NA romance you’ll love this.
Honestly, I fall in love with every character Ginger Scott writes. She has as way of a way of creating stories where you fall for not only the main characters, but you fall for their friends as well! I could not put Varsity Heartbreaker down! June and Lucas used to be best friends, shared everything, until one day their friendship was over and June was met with silence. June now returns to her old high school as a senior and sees Lucas more than she has the past two years. June has tried to move on, but she can’t forget Lucas or ignore him, even though he has turned into the popular quarterback, the guy you hate but love at the same time. June and Lucas take you on an emotional, heartbreaking, and angsty adventure. June wants to know what happened two years ago while Lucas just wants to move on. I was hooked from the beginning and loved the journey these characters take you on. The past tries to stay hidden, but eventually the truth comes out, will it make an impact on June and Lucas or will their relationship they once had stay in the past? I could not get enough of these two as well as Tory and Abby. I’m excited to see what the rest of these series has in store for us!
Get ready to swoon because I sure did with Varsity Heartbreaker!! I love a good ya book and Varsity Heartbreaker was one of the best I’ve read this year. This friends to enemies to lovers book was everything and then some. The banter the angst I couldn’t put it down. I needed to know what was going to happen with Lucas and June. The twists and turns kept me intrigued with each page. I laughed, cried was mad as hell and swooned with these two and I cannot wait for more in this series.
Varsity Heartbreaker is the first in a brand new series from Ginger Scott. It’s a mature young adult between childhood sweethearts. It turns from friends to enemies to lovers in this one. Lucas and June grew up together and were best friends, but once high school hit, Lucas stopped talking to June and she doesn’t know why. She ends up going to a different school for a few years and returns for her senior year. Lucas is angry and mean immediately upon her return, and we’re all trying to piece together exactly why he’s so angry. There are a whole lot of secrets and lies that threaten to come out.
Lucas and June are young characters dealing with some very mature issues. But, they are still growing up and handling regular high school issues too. They were both strong characters. June was so easy to love and I loved watching her grow up and stand up for herself more. Lucas was your standard quarterback heartbreaker, but he has a really sweet side too. Their friends all added so much to the story, and I’m really looking forward to their books coming up soon. This is sweet, emotional mature young adult romance and I thoroughly enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next books in the series.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Books like this are why Ginger Scott was my first unicorn author. The first one I binge read all her words & eagerly await every new release without needing a blurb.
This is a fresh take on the YA love story theme. June is such a real character you’re going to feel like she was your high school BFF. And Lucas, well he’s all the good and bad parts of a YA Romance hero rolled into one. Swoon Factor 100!
The story is smart. The pace is fantastic and the dialogue was so genuine my inner teenage girl was smiling & crying along with them.
If you’re looking for a YA Story with substance and a great big dash of heat then this is for you. Definitely recommend.
This was an emotional, angsty read. It was beautiful. These characters really gutted me.
Oh, how I love a good mature YA sorts romance! And this book is a great one!
The characters were well developed and totally swoonworthy, relatable and totally worth reading. Lucas and June are some of my new fave Ginger Scott characters for sure!
I was so impressed by how Ginger was able to write such an honest, sweet, sexy and obsession worthy romance. I think this is some of her best work to date! You don’t just get a fluff YA, high school age romance. You get a story that has authentically written characters with real life struggles and All. The. Feels! This is one of the best mature YA romances I have read in quite a while.
I saw another review for this book and wanted to give credit to a specific part of that review which absolutely, 100%, perfectly describes this story. It was such a perfect description I had to add it here: “This book was a mix of heart-wrenching and heartwarming. A slow evolution from heartbreak warfare to heart-stealing adorableness. It’s angsty and twisty and utterly unputdownable…” -Bookgasms Book Blog (goodreads)
I couldn’t say it any better! Girl you summed this book up perfectly in only a few sentences.
I was given an ARC in exchange for an honest review and can I just say, after this book I totally want to sign up to ARC read book 2! I can’t wait to see where Ginger Scott takes this series next! Five stars!
