I was really starting to get into the story and I wanted to see June (awful name) get her HEA but it came to a screeching halt. She walks into his backyard just in time to see… It turned my stomach. Then it got worse. I couldn’t deal with that and I couldn’t take the chance of more of that crap. Yes, I know that it’s realistic but I don’t want to hear it. I don’t want details. It’s too much like cheating and I can’t deal with it. Worse yet, these are high school kids. That was it. DNF. What a disappointment.
I am kind of bummed that this is my first Ginger Scott book. I have heard nothing but good things about her but this was a giant miss for me. It was slow and I had a hard time engaging with any of the characters. Was a bit disappointed that we only got June’s POV. I am okay with OW drama especially in an enemies to lovers, it adds a certain level to the drama, but I really don’t want to see details of their hookups. I think that is when I gave up but I don’t quit, I just think I wasn’t as invested anymore. There was also a lot of waffling – she kept saying she was done but nope not really she kept on pining for Lucas. She put up a good front but June was week and I couldn’t connect. Then the drama that cause him to stop being her friend was slightly ridiculous. But the kicker for me that totally ruined it for me was the ending. To me the ending will always make or break a book and oh did this break it for me. They finally get back together and have a glorious senior year but then go to separate colleges for the next four years? But it is all good because they love each other and will be together forever. Nope. Just lame. I don’t want a HEA to be that they are apart for the next four years. Just lame.
I enjoyed this story. It was filled with emotions, angst, passion and all the high school drama you could ask for. I found myself consumed by June and Lucas’ story. They both have demons that they are fighting making their story an emotional one. It was captivating and entertaining to read.
I look forward to reading more in this series.
Lucas Fuller was her everything, her best friend, first crush, first kiss…. and then he wasn’t. Things out of their control got in the way and it destroyed what was between them. June and her mother left town shortly after the implosion and things for her haven’t been the same. But now they are back in town, hoping for start fresh, and June is hoping to get her best friend back. But it may take a lot time and patience on her part, as Lucas has chosen to completely faze her out, and make her his enemy.
This heart-wrenching romance will have your heart at first glance, it’s first love gone wrong and it comes brimming with all the feels you can handle and then some. These two were once inseparable, but life meddled in their lives and left them forever changed. Now they hardly speak, only sneak glances here and there, and try their best to keep their distance. Even if both of them honestly don’t want to, but it’s what they have to do. They are mortal enemies with very little chance of forgiveness…
Varsity Heartbreaker will give you all those first time love feels, torture you with it’s words, and leave you moved. It’s not an easy fall kind of romance, as there are some moments when the hero does some unforgivable things. But you will eventually get to the good stuff, you just have to have a little patience. I really enjoyed this one, it gave my heartstrings a nice little workout!
I requested an advanced copy of this title from the publisher, and I am voluntarily leaving my honest and unbiased opinion.
I found myself immersed in the suspense of the story of high school friends June and Lucas. The writing was great, easy to follow but filled with enough emotion, suspense, angst and hope that it was complex and exciting.
Varsity Heartbreaker is one of the most compelling mature YA sports romances I’ve read in the last decade. An angsty roller coaster best friends to enemies to lovers romance.
This story flowed so perfectly and I was hooked almost instantly. June and Lucas grew up together, they’re next door neighbors and they were best friends for most of their lives until suddenly they weren’t. June changed schools because she was hurt after their fallout, let’s call it that for the sake of not revealing too much, but the story begins when she returns to her old high school for her senior year. Her old high school that is Lucas high school too.
I really, really liked June. She wasn’t the same girl that used to be Lucas best friend, she changed and that was shown during the first pages of the book. She was reacting differently to certain situations, she didn’t back down, she was being brave and fierce, she stopped caring about what people though about her and I loved every moment she pushed back. There was an interesting aspect in the story and I think Ginger Scott was a master at this: when June changed her attitude, it clearly influenced people’s behavior toward her. I loved how that was clearly shown in this story. Of course it doesn’t work all the time, because some people are just too petty (yes, I’m referring to a specific character that shall not be named) but it does work with most people.
Lucas was a challenge to like, I’ll admit it. I was angry with him through most of the book, but there were a few glimpses of the real Lucas that made me ache for so much more! I really couldn’t understand what was going on with him, but the mystery was definitely necessary to the plot. Even though I had trouble understating his interactions with June, things progressed in a interesting way and when a huge secret was revealed… everything clicked and I ended up loving him. SO. MUCH.
The secondary characters were amazing too! I loved Abby, June’s best friend, but my favorite secondary character was definitely Tory. I absolutely loved Tory, Lucas’ best friend. He’s the most hilarious character ever and seeing his friendship with June grow was one of my favorite parts of this story. I’m so excited about getting Tory’s story next!
Varsity Heartbreak is a must read YA mature sports romance that stole my heart. Ginger Scott is an amazing writer and I need to read more of her books. Highly recommended.
Varsity Heartbreaker is a great start to the Varsity series by Ginger Scott. Although the plot of Varsity Heartbreaker is one that I’ve read many times, I didn’t feel as though this was just another ‘best friends turned enemies romance’ set in high school. It dives a little deeper than that.
With this story, the author has created a world of characters and overlying story lines that I can’t wait to read more of. I loved the relationship between Lucas and June (although I really did want to slap him a few times in the beginning). Their friends and the secondary relationships being developed in this story just bring another level to the angst. There is a perfect mix of laughs, some emotional moments, and a few added twists and turns that make this an excellent YA read. I’m really looking forward to the next book in this series.
Enemies to lovers is one of my all time favorite reads and this book didn’t disappoint. Such an emotional story full of angst, heartbreak, betrayal and hidden truths. I had to put this book down several times because H made me so mad in the beginning! It’s been a while since a book has gotten me this worked up! This book brought out all the feels! High school setting books aren’t my normal go-to reads but I loved this one and can’t wait for the next one!
I enjoyed this trip back to senior year of high school. June and Lucas reminded me how feelings are so strong and every look or word means so much at seventeen. The flutters in the heart, and other places, of first love and the devastation of heartbreak. Everything is so much more, so extra, at that age. I have to hand it to Lucas and June, they have strong family loyalty to their mothers.
Ginger Scott has the gift for bringing these young people to life and making me feel all the feels right along with them. This story is full of secondary angst. Just as so often happens, the adults are so wrapped up in their own lives that these teens become collateral damage. Big life decisions are hard for anyone, with added pressure they can become all consuming.
This group of friends are ones I’d have liked to know when I was in school. I look forward to learning more about their lives in future books.
Ginger Scott and hot, sexy sports players, thrown together in a YA book is a definite match made in the football field. In book 1 of her Varsity series, “Varsity Heartbreak”, she writes a incredible enemies to lovers with a underlying bully-like stress as her characters trying to deal with decisions needed to be made during Senior Year.
“We’re seniors now. Almost eighteen. Adults.
Different people than we were. ”
June is now returning back to public school, her Senior year, after two years away. Lucas is the sexy quarterback who not only is her neighbor and forever crush, but also a perfect stranger after these two years. “He is my weakness, but he used to be my strength.”
Ginger Scott immerses her readers into her newest series “Varsity”, where we meet many key players, all important in this game of getting through senior year. Not only do we meet Lucas and June but also meet their best friends Abby and Tory as well as other friends too. We also see relationships that these characters have with family along with all the dysfunction families can bring. Ginger Scott creates such scenarios within all her stories that can resonate within so many readers of so many ages.
As I’ve said in any book of Ginger Scott’s, I HIGHLY RECOMMEND this AND ALL of her stories. This is perfect high school and above, but if recommend more mature for some sexual content.
No one writes YA like Ginger Scott! Varsity Heartbreaker is full of angst, drama, heartbreak and first loves. Ginger is such an amazing writer. She captures you from the start and leaves no detail unturned.
Fall in love with quarterback Lucas Fuller. He is the heartthrob/best friend/boy-next-door! But there is more to him than football. And June Mabee is your awkward, shy, insecure teenage girl who is becoming a woman. Life has brought heartache and trials to both of them. Former best friends whose hearts are full of love, fears, hurt, and truths. Choices are made and consequences are felt. There was a twist that kept me guessing for a bit. Very cleaver!
Be warned the ending is a happy-for-now but I was ok with that. Varsity Tiebreaker completes this duet so I am sure we will see more into Lucas and June’s future!
“That’s what life is. It’s messy. It’s sexy. It’s ugly. It’s brutally hard yet joyous all at once.”
4.5 Heartbreaking stars!

Genre: YA Sports romance

I’m a fan of Scotts work. From “Waiting on The Sidelines Series,” to the “This Is Falling series.” Now I have a new one I’m anxious for. I loved the story. Typically to Scott’s writing, it was deliciously angsty. June and Lucas are great characters. They were next door neighbors and best friends that separated when they had a falling out. Years later they reunite but in the most unamicable way. Loved June’s evolution, she’s not the same cowering girl Lucas is used to. She has panache, and spunk and stands up for herself. Lucas was a pain in the neck. He irked my nerves but I really loved his evolution as well. He redeemed himself somewhat in the end. I cannot wait for the sequel! Should be interesting.

Anytime Ms.Scott announces a new book I can’t wait for more of her words! When I read the synopsis for this one I couldn’t wait to jump into the Varsity world and I started counting down the days until it released. I enjoyed Varsity Heartbreaker!
June and Lucas’s journey grabbed my attention from the get go! I really liked that there was history between them and getting to dig deeper. Whether I got frustrated or had a smile on my face, I loved how I felt so many different things throughout reading their story. It sure kept me on my toes! I just struggled a bit when it came to fully connecting with them at times.
I so enjoyed what their friends brought to the story as well!
With Varsity Heartbreaker, Ms.Scott has created such a good read! I’m so excited for Tory’s book Varsity Tiebreaker to be released next!
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from WordSmith Publicity / the author*
I love a good young adult book because it always gives me tingles when it comes to first friendships and first loves.
The friendship between June and Lucas disintegrated for some odd reason and she couldn’t understand what in the world happened. Lucas just one day decided he wanted nothing to do with her and that was it. June couldn’t handle it so she switched schools, she was just baffled as to why he would end their friendship like that. When June has to switch back to her old school, Lucas starts to talk to June little by little and then she finds out why Lucas decided to give her the cold shoulder when he did.
My heart ached for June because of how heartbroken she was over Lucas’ treatment towards her. I was anxious myself to find out why he was acting like a total prick with her when she didn’t deserve that treatment. This young adult book is a perfect summer read and young adults out there should really read it, I’m sure they’ll love it as much as I did.

I never knew a girl next door kind of story could be this complicated. With every Ginger Scott book we get the ups and downs of growing up they all are mature. Emotions run high and it’s not cut and dry teenage years. Sure it’s set in high school still have the problems faced. June and Lucas have been the best of friends since they were young but suddenly no contact no communication from Lucas side and June is left with this indifferent guy. Lots of animosity between them in those two years apart.
Things are coming out secrets and things that would decide their future
It was hard watching them take it out on the other when they weren’t getting along. Pokes and jabs, little hurts here and there. Lucas could be a major jerk at times and having June retaliate was interesting. It’s hard to deny though despite all that June cares for Lucas she’s confused what happened so she plays along. The shift from all that angst took a long while. I felt like that was needed to show how complicated things are between their history and growing up decisions. In some way Lucas can’t help feel close to June still despite the secrets.
Lots of misunderstanding and parent issues it got intense halfway through and picked up the pace. Though I’d want to savor Lucas and June’s story there was other things going on. As a whole they were a little part of it all. But I enjoyed them together. Friendship played a role getting past all that turbulent times it was great to see. June’s bond with her mom showed throughout this story and with all life changes ahead it will be an important part.
I do like the quarter back and not so popular girl trope I have to admit so this was pretty well done. Lucas made up for it as best he could. This isn’t the end for them it’s a new chapter of their lives to be written. But for now June found new things in her life and Lucas finds the stance to go chase his dreams. Ginger Scott is good at capturing the emotions and struggles of teens, making it engaging. Looking forward to Abby and Tory’s story next.
I love this author’s fabulous YA/NA delicious romances with the always compelling characters. June and Lucas are latest pair we get to drool over. The love to hate to love relationship between the two is angsty, emotional and heart wrenching at times. June is a terrific heroine that never gives up on her man even when he’s being a butthead of meanness and mixed signals. Lucas is the football hero and school’s hottest hunk but his home life is a mess. Likewise, June’s home went through an upheaval at the same time Lucas turned away from June and their families quit socializing. June found her strength and came into her own in her senior year with the help of best friend, Abby. She fantastic and I can’t wait for her story. Lucas finally gets his head out of his butt and realizes June is the one for him. But it’s not smooth sailing with the parental issues. I must say that most of the adults in this story are crap. I really didn’t like that aspect but it caused drama and some of the emotional highlights in the story. June’s mom really came through as supportive and fabulous. I loved Tory and his outrageous personality. Plus he has a gorgeous twin. There were some whiplash and angsty moments that are really not my thing but the sweet and sexy romance between Lucas and June was truly wonderful. This is a terrific start to a new series by this outstanding author. I look forward to the next installment. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC.
Ginger Scott is my go-to author for fabulous YA romance! Her characters are real with reall life struggles. She has mastered the balance of navigating that age where they’re not kids anymore, but not quite old enough to be considered adults.
Varsity Heartbreaker delivered on all counts, and is a fabulous start to a new series!
It’s the perfect enemies to lovers story. It had that angsty push and pull between June and Lucas that had me reading way past my bedtime!
June and her neighbor Lucas were best friends since childhood, but once they reach high school, he cuts her out of his life. Without explanation. June ended up changing schools, but due to financial struggles she’s forced to attend public school for her senior year, where she will have to see Lucas regularly.
In the beginning, their animosity runs thick, and for a moment I couldn’t see how they were going to move from enemies to lovers. There were snippets where I could see Lucas being sweet, but like June I was so confused. I NEEDED to know why he cut her out! At one point, I was sure I had things figured out, but as secrets are revealed and misunderstandings are cleared up I realized I fell victim to the lies.
I really loved the friendship in this book. Both June and Lucas have some really great friends and I can’t wait to see more of them as the series continues. I really loved June and Lucas together. They loved and supported each other, and I hope this is just the beginning for them. I can’t wait for more of this series.
Ginger Scott at her best!
June and Lucas are neighbours, they were also the best of friends until the day things got complicated and Lucas completely stopped talking to her or even so much so greeting her.
Now,after two years, June got back at the same high school Lucas attends and for them there is no way to avoid confrontation…will they find a way to go back to each other or will their relationship be doomed forever?
This was a very good young adult read.
June and Lucas journey reminded me of myself at that age, even if some behaviours don’t look like something I share now at 34 years old, being honest in my teens I was willing to wait and to love a guy even if he doesn’t feel the same way for me.
I think Ginger Scott wrote a solid story with relatable characters that perfectly show the reader their age issues and heartbreaks.
I can’t wait to read next novel in the series because reading this book I fell for the “Douche”…none other than Tory D’Angelo.
Varsity Heartbreaker is the first book in the Varsity Series. This is June and Lucas story. It’s a YA Mature College Romance. And can be read as a standalone.
Lucas is more than the boy next door for June. Was her best friend, neighbor, her crush, her first kiss and first love. Suddenly Lucas stopped to talk to June and the reason is a mystery. And that kept me to wanting more, to know more about them.
In the beginning, Lucas acted like a douche. And made me feel angry until he turned into this sweet and caring guy. He was fighting with his true fillings and all because a “secret”. Both of them had it but if you want to know what is those secrets all about, you have to find yourself. 😉 This sport/college romance will send you back to school. With all the drama of the first love, friendship, fights, hang outs, dates and the angsty of a heartbreak. Not to mention the family drama.
Ginger became one of my favorite authors. She creates strong characters and is easy to connect with her writing style and stories. This is a journey that you don’t want to miss. And I can’t wait for the next book. Abby and Tory are enjoyable secondary characters and their story is the next one. Yay!!
