I thought discovering magic would be the hardest part of my new life. Add that to the list of things I keep getting wrong. Some wise idiot once said, “With great power comes great responsibility.” But what if I don’t want either one? Finding out I’m a dual elemental mage was hard enough, and I definitely don’t want the responsibility and political power that apparently comes with it. How am I … How am I supposed to stop a crazy vampire from outing the supernatural community I didn’t know existed until a few weeks ago? I have no idea, but my new partner and elementals seem to think I should have all the answers.
Every time we come up with a plan to keep peace in the supernatural world, something else just gets in the way. This time it’s an ogre and an elder vampire whose motives are beyond my comprehension. I just hope I figure it out before the lunatic announces our magical presence to the world. Humanity will react the only way they know how: with violence.
Magic and nuclear weapons don’t mix, no matter how hard we stir.

If you are expecting to be able to read this book slowly over a few days, you are going to be disappointed. The moment you start reading, you won’t be able to put it down. I could go on for pages and pages about how good the story is, the great characters, the brilliant writing and the surprises the book is full of, but I won’t. Read it for yourself and you will find out what I mean. I am now 2 books into the series and I still don’t know who to trust or what will happen next. I cannot wait for book 3 to come out.
It was a sunny winter day in Australia when I started reading this book so I decided to read outside. Big mistake. I was so engrossed in the story I didn’t even notice my arms were getting sunburnt.
I cannot bet enough of Bostic’s world. I love AJ and Logan, and just as you think you got the baddies and the good guys figured out…. well, think again. This series keeps adding layers and I am really enjoying how AJ is growing and learning more about herself and her legacy. If you want witches, shifters, vampires, power struggles then this is SO the book for you – but heads up: read book 1 of the series first because you don’t want to miss out!
I thoroughly enjoyed this addition to the series! We follow AJ’s story as she and her vampire Logan try to evade the plethora of attacks coming from the Vampire Council. With her rise to power as the Magister of North America, AJ is finding it difficult to tell friend from foe as war is looming on the horizon for the enslavement of humanity. There’s plenty of drama, intriguing twists, and action that will keep you turning the pages and have you wrapped in the story. I can’t wait to read the next installment. I highly recommend this one!
The war between mages and vampires is getting worse. AJ is learning the ropes of her job pretty well and with Logan by her side, things are intense. However, when a curveball means that she might have to form an alliance with her previous enemy, Kellen, her future becomes more uncertain.
While this story seemed a little slower than the first, I enjoyed the little elements of worldbuilding that the author added. They made the world feel realer, easier to picture AJ in.
Speaking of AJ, I loved the expansion of her powers and the new creatures that she encountered. Like the first book though, she’s not particularly good at making friends. Except for with Logan of course. The bond between them is tested as they’re thrusted into the midst of the ever-growing battle between mages and vampires. I wasn’t happy to see Kellen in such an important position in this book, but he had a pleasant growth of character that actually softened my opinion of him.
Can’t wait to see what book three has to offer these characters!
Simply brill, I just can’t wait to read the next book and find out what happens.
Super, super great fantasy series. Love the magic, the vampires and AJ as a main charecter is great.
What more can I say? This series is definitely worth a read.
Alisandra – pardon me, AJ – is at it again. Or is that still? As she learns more about connecting with her elementals and the various ways she can use her magic, the vampires – most of them – and (gasp!) ogres and other magical creatures begin to appear in her life. None of them, of course, have any interest in being friends with her (except for Logan, who’s really hooked on her, vampire or not).
Then there’s Braden (again). Is he a friend? No, not after the last time. Is he an enemy? Not at the moment, it appears. Kellen? Well, he’s still her magical partner, with the elements she doesn’t have and vice versa. But he’s not exactly on her good side and he’s got a lot of work to do to convince her otherwise.
Being the Magister isn’t easy. Especially when it’s probably about the last thing AJ wants to do. She’s going to have to be patient.
