This has to be one of my new favorite fairy tale retellings. It’s Cinderella for adult paranormal romance fans. And I loved every minute of it. It had me consumed from the first line to the last. I was instantly connected to Cindy and I wanted all who did her wrong to pay. This was a great story about how life can be unfair, but we all have choices to make. It was an epic love story. Who doesn’t wanna fall for a vampire king? Talk about silver fox! And if you want steamy romance, you got it! And this was a story about revenge. Not giving away those details. Just know your blood will be boiling and you’ll be demanding justice yourself. I love that it’s a series. I definitely want more. This narrator did a great job. Her voice matched the fairy tale essence of the story. A must read/listen for paranormal romance fans.
I had this book for some time on my tbr. I don’t know why I didn’t read it before. I loved it. It was just like normal Cinderella story that we know but with a plot twist. I loved that plot twist and how story is keeping you on reading till the last page of the book.
Cinderella (aka Cindy) Rutherford has had a hard life since her father died and left her under the guardianship of her stepmother and with two stepsisters. At age 24, she has one year to fulfill the stipulation in her father’s will to take sole control of her estate or forfeit everything to her stepmother.
King Caspian has been the ruler of Kingdom Farrington for a long time. He has lost the love of his life and wants to step down from the throne. First, he must get his wayward and deeply vain son up to snuff to rule the kingdom. King Caspian decides to throw a ball so his son can choose a bride and settle down. He also must deal with the pesky corrupted royal guards. Maybe he can make time for a second chance at love.
I wanted this novel to be exciting. I had read Martha’s story first, which referenced the characters and plotline of this novel throughout the novel. I enjoy retellings of fairytales since the original ones were dark and sinister and not like the ones Disney produces. The novel started off well with Cindy being a strong, independent woman that could take care of herself. The constant allusions to Cindy’s “bad girl time” began to be annoying. There was never any definite information on how long and what happened during that time. The continuity of the story often changed. At the beginning of the novel, Cindy regretted her wild time after her father’s death due to a sexual assault. However, by the middle of the novel, Cindy’s memories about that time were about her lover Tom. I also think Tom was her father’s name, so I got somewhat confused with that. Also, King Caspian had an advisor named Jeremy, however, in one scene the name changes to Constant. Towards the end of the novel, one of the huntsmen is referred to as “Roweling” and then a few pages later he is referred to as “Roweland.” King Caspian was a conundrum for me. When Cindy first leaves him, he calls his guards to find her because he does not want to alert his kingdom to his supernatural powers. His inner monologue states several times he could find her immediately with his supernatural powers. However, he never uses those supernatural powers to find her but uses them to fight others and “glamorize” wedding guests. Huh?! Throughout the novel, King Caspian talks about using his supernatural powers to hide his identity to find out who is corrupt in his royal guards, yet by the end of the novel he has not proven anything. He never questions the stepmother about who helped her, and the stepsisters continue to live the good life. There were more inner monologues and descriptive information than dialogue between characters. I am a dialogue girl, so found myself skimming pages to get to the end of the story.
A very adult retelling of Cinderella. Cindy’s father died and left his estate to her with stipulations attached to the deed. If Cindy didn’t get them done then the estate would go to the very cruel step mother and her two mean step sisters. They were doing their best to keep Cindy from getting what really belonged to her. The King’s wife had died some years before and he had become besotted with Cindy. Leave it to the step mother to start trouble and that she did. Interesting storytelling.
This story is absolutely amazing. Caspian and Cinderella are wonderful together. This story is truly a fairy tail. There wasn’t a single moment I didn’t love. The writing and flow of this book is done well. I absolutely recommend this book.
