The story that kicked off the international #1 bestselling Vampire Academy series is NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE! St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, … been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

Loved this series, read it some time back and just had to get them on kindle when they popped up at a very good price.
Story pulled me in
No strong feelings one way or the other about this story. It was OK. Well edited. For some reason the story and characters just didn’t grab me. Not sure why, nothing I can ready point to. If the series was on KU, I might have gone on to the next book to see if it was better.
I really recommend this book for older teens. It was very interesting to read. I couldn’t put it down. I just wish there were more books added to the series. Oh and by the way there’s a movie too. Haven’t watched it, but really looking forward to it.
Hit all the emotions!
Book 1 is interesting and somewhat entertaining. Some YA books have a lot of teenage hormone angst while others don’t; this one does, which is somewhat of a turnoff. I like the mystery and training portion though.
Incredible To A High Degree.
One of my favourite series of books that go from heartbreaking to inspiring throughout ive read them that many times I could quote them back.
Primero leí Mestiza de Jennifer J. Armentrout, y la historia me pareció muy parecida a Vampire Academy, el libro esta entretenido pero no lo considero muy original y me parece muy cansado que la historia se alargue tanto.
Who doesn’t love a heroine who kicks butt? More than that, Rose’s friendship with Lissa is wonderfully heart-wrenching and watching Rose fight so hard to protect her rings eerily true for anyone who’s had someone close to them struggle with depression.
Vampire Academy is and always will be my favorite series, period. The characters are so well-developed and I found myself falling more and more in love with them with each page. I will never be able to fully express my love for these books, as it would take ages. I highly recommend the series. You won’t regret a thing.
This series focuses on four people and their relationships with each other, and the world of Moroi, Dhampire, and Strigoi. So I will speak a little about each main character then touch on the plot of this book.
1. Rose (Rosemarie ) Hathaway: Rose is the main Heroine in this series. She is a 17 year old Dhampir (Half human/ Half Vampire) at St.Vladimir Academy where she is training to be a guardian ( guardians are Dhampirs trained to protect Moroi the good vampires against the Strigoiki the bad vampires). Rose’s best friend is Lissa and her love interest is Dimitri. Rose has some abandonment issues because she never met her dad and her mom dumped her off at the school to be raised so she could go off and be a guardian. Rose is a smart mouth, that is loyal, brave and she has a short fuse.
2. Dimitri Belikov: Dimitri is the main hero in this series. He is a 24 year old Dhampir guardian. He is called a god because he is one of the best guardians and has amazing fighting skills. He is Lissa’s guardian and a teacher at St. Vladimir academy. He is the love interest of Rose and he is her guardian trainer. Dimitri is stoic and stand offish. He is totally dedicated to his job. Dimitri is very protective and loyal.
3. Lissa(Vasilisa) Dragomir: Lissa is a Moroi Princess. She is best friends with Rose and her love interest is Christian. Lissa’s whole family is dead killed in a car wreck. Rose also died in that wreck but Lissa having spirit magic brought her back to life. Now Rose is shadow kissed and has a bond with Lissa. The bond is one way Rose can feel what Lissa is feeling and sometimes she can see through Lissa’s eyes. Lissa feels a lot of guilt that she isn’t living up to her family name as she is the last Dragomir. Because of Lissa’s spirit magic she gets depressed and has dark painful emotions and cuts herself to feel better. Lissa is sweet, loyal and doesn’t treat people badly just because she is a royal. Lissa can’t stand for anyone or animal to suffer and wants to help and heal any time she can.
4. Christian Ozera: Christian is a Moroi royal. He has fire magic. His parents made a choice to turn Strigoi willingly so they could live forever. They were hunted down in front of him when he was a child and killed. He lived with his aunt around humans for a time. He is anti-social, and everyone acts like he doesn’t exist. He is very brave and open minded. He wants to fight with the Dhampirs instead of being protected and helpless. He is very smart, observant, but is insecure and can be jealous .
This was a great book. Better than the movie. Story was very compelling. Now I’m going to go read next one.
I read all 6 books in the series and then I read the 6 spin off books (Blood Lines). They were just as good. You can’t go wrong with Richelle Mead books. This was actually the first series I’ve read since I was in High School. It made me fall in love with reading
I think its great just looking at it
I like the strength of the main female
One of my all time favorite series! I’ve re-read the books multiple times.
Higley recommended! Good read, it kept me up past my bed time 🙂
The whole series great! Hard to find another series like it
So let me start by getting something out in the open. I am a vampire fan and have been since my first episode of Buffy. That said, I’ve always preferred my vampires to be on T.V. or in movies as opposed to books. While I read the Twilight series I never approached being a twihard and Vampire Academy wasn’t even on my radar until I saw the movie trailer a few years ago. I wasn’t expecting much from Vampire Academy because the movie trailers looked terrible, but to my surprise, I really loved the book and have even bought the rest of the series. The main character of Rose is feisty fun. She’s got a great mouth on her and she zings a number of really good one liners. I’m a sucker for a strong female lead and Rose is just that. She’s also an impulsive rebel with a lot to learn and it’s fun to watch her on that journey. A lot of vampire books are all about the forbidden romance, usually between a human and a vampire. While Vampire Academy has a bit of forbidden romance, the book is about so much more than that. The primary relationship is between two friends, Rose and Lissa, and I really liked this focus. I also like that it’s not about the vampire/human dynamic. All the major characters are vampires or half-vampires so you get to live in this entirely different vampire world for a little while. The underlying vampire lore that Mead develops during the course of the novel adds another dimension to the overall story. Vampire Academy is, for the most part, light fun, but the lore adds some creep factor, a prerequisite for all good vamp tales.
Verdict: If you like vampires definitely give this one a try. The movie isn’t half bad either.
