The story that kicked off the international #1 bestselling Vampire Academy series is NOW A MAJOR MOTION PICTURE! St. Vladimir’s Academy isn’t just any boarding school—it’s a hidden place where vampires are educated in the ways of magic and half-human teens train to protect them. Rose Hathaway is a Dhampir, a bodyguard for her best friend Lissa, a Moroi Vampire Princess. They’ve been on the run, … been on the run, but now they’re being dragged back to St. Vladimir’s—the very place where they’re most in danger. . . .
Rose and Lissa become enmeshed in forbidden romance, the Academy’s ruthless social scene, and unspeakable nighttime rituals. But they must be careful lest the Strigoi—the world’s fiercest and most dangerous vampires—make Lissa one of them forever.

Yes, I finally read Vampire Academy! Actually, my sister saw the movie and thought I’d like it, so I watched the movie first. (Which sticks pretty close to the book.)
The Good:
First, yay for a good female friendship! I also liked the chemistry between both of the ‘couples’.
I didn’t like most of the side characters, but Christian, Dimitri, and Mason were all great! (Much better than Rose and Lissa.)
The world was the best part! No, it’s nothing really unique, but it all comes together well. The plot was good and I didn’t know who’d done it too far ahead of time.
The Bad:
Both of the main characters were okay, but they both annoyed me. Rose can be abrasive at times, and she does what she thinks is best without considering other people’s feelings. Lissa used people constantly and didn’t even feel bad about it.
It was nice that it wasn’t all downer, because it easily couldn’t been too depressing. (I prefer lighter books.) There was just too much teen drama!
Recommended? Yes.
I mainly read this book because I wanted to know what happened after the movie, so yes I plan to read Frostbite.
I’ve read this book countless times and it’s one of the very few that I’m sure I can read it over and over again and never grow bored. Love this series of VA by Richelle Mead.
Her world building is amazing. Her definitions of vampires are breathtaking. The romance, suspense, action, adventure, comedy, are just to name a few.
The while series would be prefect, along with Interview with a Vampire by Anne Rice..
Love this series with its twists and turns, brooding sexy males and kick ass females. It is one I keep re reading once a year, which is no small feat considering there are lots of books in the series and they are all gloriously long, making it possible to really submerse oneself in this universe. So recommend it.
I love this series and the one after Bloodlines. Highly recommend if your interested in this style you will love VA.
This is a great first book in the series. I just loved Rose. She is feisty and fiercely loyal. The perfect balance to the more demure Lissa. I’m so intrigued by Dimitri and can’t wait to see where this goes. Christian is an awesome character too! I will definitely be continuing this series.
Reread 4/2021: Just checking, yep, still obsessed with how perfect this is. It’s just so much fun, and I just love the love interests being set up for the girls in this book. I, of course, still love Dimitri and Rose, but I also had a new appreciation for Christian and Lissa.
Reread : I love this so much, it’s like perfect cheesy YA paranormal romance. I had noticed on my first read through that twists later had been hinted at, but I’m catching so much more foreshadowing this time – I’m kind of impressed with how much there is. Dimitri is just such a great love interest, and I’m excited to continue my reread of the series.
Vampire Academy is an intriguing take on vampires — combining traditional lore and modern life in a way that’s tons of fun. Rose Hathaway, our main character, is impulsive, spunky, and incredibly caring when it comes to her best friend, Lissa.
Rose is a 17 year old Dhampir who has runaway from school with her vampire friend, Lissa. After being caught by the guardians who protect and serve St. Vladimir’s Academy, they are brought back to the school. This time, they have secrets to keep and must work at fitting in. Meanwhile, Rose learns more about how she can protect Lissa and what Lissa’s strange powers and their soul bond mean.
One thing I found really interesting is learning more about Lissa through Rose’s eye. Lissa and Christian are both compelling characters and add a lot to the story. There is a lot of uncertainty remaining and Rose and the others have a lot to hide and contend with in the future.
I enjoyed this funny and spellbinding book just as I had when I read it for the first time, five years ago.
“What’s this for? For my first day?” “No,” he said simply. “Because I thought it would make you happy.”
I have to share my favorite book series, which started with this book. This scene showed a snapshot of Dimitri’s heart for Rose… and the future of them. Rose without Dimitri and Dimitri without Rose is world that couldn’t exist. This book kicks off of a ride that takes you heart into places unknown..
This was my first ever book I’ve bought.
When I was a little girl I went into the bookstore with my mom one day. I was walking between all these different amazing books until I found one that I thought I’d like. I borrowed it. It took me a while to read and I got to the half of the book when all of a sudden one of the main characters died. I closed the book. I didn’t finish it and I said I don’t ever want to read any other books. Then a few weeks later I had to return the book and as I was picking it up it fell and opened at one page and what did I find? The main character that died was suddenly alive. However did is not Vampire Academy I’m writing about. This is only how my love for books started and ended and then started again and I thought I need to write this. Now let me get to Vampire Academy review.
As you may know there is a Vampire Academy movie. I freaking love the movie and with the ending we got I wanted to know how it continues and what will happen. I found out that there is no sequel, nor third or sixth book coming. So I searched online and found out that this movie is actually a book series. Could you imagine my excitement? I was hesitating whether to buy the book or not. It took me half a year to decide I want it! Unfortunately in my language it was sold out and I was unable to buy it, BUT I didn’t give up. I searched each day on Google and with a little luck and a few months later, I found one copy being sold on auction and I put my money into it. I had to have it! And I DID! When the book came home I was so happy! And I went to reading it and I freaking loved it! This book was my first read after Twilight that I absolutely loved and really got me into reading. Without this book there would be no reading for me, no reviews to write, no new worlds to explore, no man to love, haha.
But now really into the review, I’m sorry for stalling.
When I saw the movie I had a lot of gaps that needed filling. I couldn’t understand some things mentioned in the movie. I’ve read this book in I think it was 4 days, which for me back then was like 2 hours.
The main character Rose and Vasilisa (Lisa) are amazing. My all time favourite is Rose. I love the way she is. She’s strong, herself, independent, doesn’t take no for an answer, speaks her mind, knows how to fight, gets it her way…there’s seriously a lot I love about Rose Hathaway. Honestly to the point I wish I were she. Whenever I have a tough day or a situation I need to get through, Rose is there. I know it sounds silly, but I also think we all have a person/character like this.
I love the bond that Lisa accidentally created with Rose. I loved that whenever Lisa was in trouble or something happened Rose was there to help her. They were best friends through and through.
Don’t let me forget about our cowboy or Comrade Dimitri Belikov. That man is a walking-talking sex bomb! I loved him. Well, not really, haha. At the beginning he was infuriating and too stiff, but after a while he warmed my heart and I loved him. The way he cared for Rose when she was going through the bond trouble with Lisa, the way he was there for Rose when she needed him the most? I mean, who wouldn’t love our Comrade Dimitri? Oh, and the way he calls her Roza? Aaah
There were parts in the book when I was too into it, BUT there was never a part in the book I would hate. Nope. Nada. Nothing! Every page I read, I fell more and more in love with Richelle Mead’s baby VA.
After I finished this book my world crashed. You know when you get too much into a book you start acting and talking like your favourite character? Yup, that happened to me with Rose Hathaway. But that didn’t stop me to have a break from the rest of the books, nope. Haha. I bought the rest of them and read them in a week! But that is for another story and another review.
Well, I hope you liked this review, because I loved it. I will have to reread the rest of the books in the series to review them properly.
Rose has to protect her best friend Lissa from danger. Not just because they are best friends, but also because Rose is a Guardian and Lissa a Moroi princess.
This is a great book about friendship, the cost of magic, a character dealing with depression (without a too quick resolution on that), and forbidden love.
It’s fast-paced, Rose is a charming (if snarky and aggressive) character, the stakes are high, and it’s an enjoyable read.
Vampires with a twist. I like how much of East European folklore was used to create the vampire world.
Trigger warning: Lissa suffers from depression and occasionally cuts her wrists.
It’s fun to spend time with Rose who is almost larger than life.
I recommend this to those who love vampire fiction.
Unexpectedly engrossing! Loved the connections between the characters, especially between Rose and Dimitri – where a future was not in the cards, their world helped them figure it out – overcoming adversity is something I’m always looking for in a story – it was here.
It’s a page turning book that’s easy to read and it’s hard to figure out the plot of the story!!!
A great vampire book series set in the modern age.
Vampire Academy was a surprisingly good read! It has the Moroi, the mortal vampire line, whom have elemental magic. The Strigoi, immortal evil vampires, whom feed on innocents and hunt the Moroi. Last, the Dhampir, half human and half Moroi, whom are guardians to the Moroi. All attending St. Vladimir’s Academy, learning to hone their skills and receive an education in a safe and secure environment. An environment Lissa and Rose escaped from for two years, before the guardian Dimitri Belikov found them and brought them back to the academy. Now, Princess Lissa and Guardian Novice Rose are thrown back into the drama of high school royals, politics, and a very real threat to their lives. As all the drama and intrigue unfolds, you find yourself hooked.
I love this book and the entire series could not recommend a better book to read
This book was ok. The back story and world building was good, but I didn’t care for most of the characters.
This pretty much summed it up… I love love loved this book!!!!
Enjoyed this series as it was engaging and the characters were relatable
It’s a great series with characters that make you care about them. There are many other books copying this series that don’t really come together.
