What to read on a rainy day curled up on the sofa under a cozy blanket? There are so many choices! But I think I would choose to reread a series I could escape in. While I am not a “vampire groupie”, I did really enjoy the Vampire Academy series. I found the characters easy to know and like and the plot lines were creative. These books drew me in and captured my imagination – escapism at its best! So now all I need is a good rainy day – checking the weather report now!
i love all of these books so much
I love this books and loved the movie and the spin-off series also. It is a shame that they dropped the movies after the first one…this was a good series to transform in a TV show.
I could NEVER put the books down!!
This is my guilty pleasure series. When asked if I enjoy a good romance novel this is the direction I send people in. Then again, I also classify The Mummy and Hellboy as romcom movies. (The both end in a kiss, so sue me)
one of my all time favorites I’ve been in love with the series for 5 years
Loved this series and have recommended it to multiple people
I can’t put into words how much I love this series. The main character is a strong, independent, smart, funny, bad-ass, motivated, beautiful young woman that would (and does) go to any length for her friends. I read this series in high school and just rediscovered it a couple weeks ago. Unlike some books I liked back then, I love these even more than before. The dialogue is realistic; I’m constantly impressed on Mead’s ability to stay in character throughout the series, and how each character has such a unique and separate voice. The writing – depending on the situation – can be hilarious, heartfelt, gut wrenching, suspenseful, romantic, etc. Rose is such a strong character, she pulls you right into her head and makes you feel like absolutely anything is possible… because to her, it is.
The Bloodlines series from Mead is an off-shoot of the original VA series, and is incredible as well. It follows another formidable main character, Alchemist Sydney Sage, who we meet in the 5th installment of VA. If you love Vampire Academy, you’ll love Bloodlines.
Along with all of this, Vampire Academy has a huge and amazing fan base, so there’s plenty of writing on fanfiction to keep you entertained long after you finish the series 😉
The Vampire Academy series is amazing! I love how it is written and the characters are wonderful. I read all 6 books in a little more than a month, that is how great they are.
These books have gotten me through the darkest times. They are also a little depressing but that’s okay. I still love them.
I thoroughly enjoyed the main character, Rose: her witty, die-hard attitude as well as the intricacies of her relationships with her friends, and then there’s the aspect of forbidden romance, too. It was a great new take on the vampire genre, and a marvelous read.
Vampire Academy: Vampire Academy Series Book #1 By: Richelle Mead
4 Stars
Vampire Academy is the first book in the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead. This book has been on my TBR pile for sooooo long now and have procrastinated about reading the series, for years now.
This year part of my reading challenge was to reduce the older backlog on my TBR- both in paperbacks and on my kindle. So, I found myself looking at this series, determined to make my way through them, no matter how bad they may prove to be. I have worked my way through the whole series now, and have to say that they were nowhere near as bad as I had been led to believe. The first book starts off a little slow, but I enjoyed the overall story.
This is a YA vampire story. There is action, adventure, danger, mystery, angst, romance, and drama. The characters are quite well developed, with their own individual personalities. There are character’s that I immediately liked and others whom I detested. I liked Ms. Mead’s take on the vampire lore, keeping in mind that it is aimed at young adults- and even though my tastes have developed a lot further since my teenage years, I still enjoyed reading this book/series.
In this first book we meet Lissa Dragomir a Moroi Princess, and her best friend Rose, who is training to be her protector. There is a lot more to them and the situation, and we get to discover that along with learning all about the 3 different types of Vampires- Moroi, Strigoi, and Dhampir. The girls have spent the past two years on their own, but have been found and are brought back to St. Vladimir’s Academy for their safety, especially Lissa’s. But, we soon discover that things aren’t quite so safe inside the academy- and evil has a hidden agenda. We follow along as everything is revealed.
I won’t go into it all here, because I don’t want to spoil anything for you. But Ms. Mead’s world building and the premise behind the story really is quite good. If like me you had been put off by bad reviews, I suggest reading the series and drawing your own conclusions.
Thank you, Ms. Mead!
Frostbite (Vampire Academy Series Book #2)
4 Stars
Frostbite is the second book in the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead.
As with the first book, this is a YA vampire story. There is action, adventure, danger, mystery, angst, friendship, a bit of a forbidden love element, romance, and drama.
This book picks up not long after book one concluded. Rose and Dimitri are still training, and there is definite chemistry and feelings between them- and this is where the forbidden love element comes into the story, as they are both Lissa’s (future) guardians there can be no relationship for them. We also meet Rose’s mother, which gives us more insight as to how/why Rose is the way she is. The Strigoi have become a real problem and there is a lot of tension surrounding what to do about the situation. This book delves a little into the vampire ‘politics’, which gives an extra element of interest, too. When some decide to take matters into their own hands, things take a deadly turn. What happens you ask- well I recommend reading the book/series to discover all the details for yourself.
Thank you, Ms. Mead!
Shadow Kiss (Vampire Academy Series Book #3)
4 Stars
Shadow Kiss is the third book in the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead.
This is a YA vampire story- with action, adventure, emotion, friendship, vampires, evil, danger, mystery, angst, push-pull, warnings, romance, drama, ghosts, and choices.
I found this book to be a lot more emotional than the previous two. Some of the story was a little predictable, but that didn’t detract from my enjoyment of the story- wondering if what I suspected was right. Rose is tested on quite a few levels in this book. She experiences quite a lot of changes and will need to make some choices too. Her heart and her duty are in conflict here- making the story quite engrossing. And as always, the Strigoi are never far away, bringing danger and threatening everything.
Another great instalment in the series!
Thank you, Ms. Mead!
Blood Promise (Vampire Academy Series Book #4)
4 Stars
Blood Promise is the fourth book in the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead. As I have explained previously I have procrastinated about reading the series, for years now. This year part of my reading challenge was to reduce the older backlog on my TBR- both in paperbacks and on my kindle. So, I found myself looking at this series, determined to make my way through them. Now I have worked my way through the whole series, I have enjoyed the stories and they really get better with each book.
This is a YA vampire story- with action, adventure, emotion, friendship, vampires, evil, danger, mystery, and lots of introspection.
After the events of the previous book/s, Rose finds herself in Russia- determined to keep her vow to Dimitri. This becomes quite and adventure, meeting new friends- as well as encountering many enemies. I found this story to be the ‘slowest’ of the series, and some of Rose’s inner dialogue/introspection frustrated me. I understand what the author was trying to achieve with this book, in context to the overall series, but I was frustrated none-the-less. The second half if the book flowed a lot better, and there were some great action scenes which made up for some of the frustration. Will she keep her vow to Dimitri? There is a lot at stake in this story!
Thank you, Ms. Mead!
Spirit Bound (Vampire Academy Series Book #5)
4 Stars
Spirit Bound is the fifth book in the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead.
This is a YA vampire story- with action, adventure, emotion, friendship, vampires, evil, danger, mystery, angst, push-pull, warnings, romance, drama, ghosts, and choices.
After ‘that’ ending in book #4, I couldn’t wait to dive into this story. Rose has endured a lot of heartache on her journey. She’s back at St. Vladimir’s Academy and re-united with her best friend Lissa. With graduation fast approaching the girls are looking forward to life out in ‘the real world’. But there is unfinished business with Rose and Dimitri- and the story is well worth the read to find out what happens!
Thank you, Ms. Mead!
Last Sacrifice (Vampire Academy Series Book #6)
4 Stars
Last Sacrifice is the sixth and final book in the Vampire Academy Series by Richelle Mead. And now I have read the entire series, I can honestly say that I am happy that I finally took the plunge, and am really happy with how Ms. Mead finished it all up.
This is a YA vampire story- with action, adventure, emotion, friendship, vampires, mystery, ghosts, angst, and romance. The characters are quite well developed, with their own individual personalities. Ms. Mead’s take on the vampire lore is quite intriguing, keeping in mind that the series is aimed at young adults- and my tastes have developed a lot further since my teenage years, but I still enjoyed reading the series.
Rose, Lissa, Dimitri and friends really have come quite a long way since the beginning of the series. This was definitely my favourite of all the books!
A fitting conclusion to the series. And I look forward to reading more of Ms. Mead’s books in the future!
Thank you, Ms. Mead!
Fun and easy read for those into the paranormal. Enough action to keep me interested, but definitely for your YA fiction fans rather than those who prefer a more complex read.
Loved this book. Makes me double think if Twilight is my favorite book which you would never hear me say. Defintely recomendreading ,although I feel like book can have life lessons in for example when Rose holds back from fighting someone earlier in the book and Rose and Lissa having consequences for there actions for example running away from the academy .Can’t wait to read the rest of this series really excited
Loved all of the books! Good books to reread. The last book unpredictably kept me guessing until the last moment. Books better than the movie.
This was an easy choice. A top of the pile author and an inspiration to new wannabe authors
It has been years since i’ve read the whole series cover to cover but I want to leave a review since I just bought them. So, I cant reveal to much because then I’d be giving spoilers to those who dont want them and if i seem vague sorry its also because i may not remember everything that happens. So starting with the 1st on VA. Its what you would expect of the first book. its a teaser not much happens in terms of action, but just enough is going on in the story to keep you engaged. Its an intro to the over all story in the series. The 2nd one, Frostbite, is probably my favorite. in this book you get in inside look at rose and begin to understand why she is the way she is. a very important player is introduced. Shadow Kiss, Blood Promises, and Spirit Bound is like the exciting middle. i literally cant say too much about these 3 other than read them lol because what happens in one book carries on into the next. But what i will say is that there is a much heavier focus on rose and Dimitri (i may have spelled his name wrong) and their very questionable relationship. and last but not least the Last Sacrifice, is also one of my favorites. lest just say shit goes down in this one. over all the series is a good read so check it out
