Former Army Ranger Chance Grayson takes chances like his name. He’s the wild child of the Grayson brothers. After his 4th tour to Afghanistan and Iraq, he left the military and returned home to Hellfire, TX. An adrenaline junky he’s afraid to slow down, afraid the memories of war will catch up. He rides a motorcycle and lives at the ranch when not at the fire station. Army dog handler, Kate … Kate Bradley, left the military and adopted her military war dog. She hired onto the sheriff’s department on the condition the dog came with her. New in town, she moves into a garage apartment and goes to work retraining her bomb-sniffing dog to find drugs.
Chance teams with Kate to find a local arsonist bent on blowing up Hellfire. They work close together to determine if their bogey is just burning buildings or creating a distraction in order to find something else. Meanwhile, the firefighter and the deputy spark a tinder of desire that threatens to go up in flames.

I received an ARC Copy of this book and I chose to review it. I have to say I have been an Elle James a fan for a long time. This book is one of her best. This one will help you realize just what Vets. can go through after they leave the military. A wonderful story. The book was well written and the characters were fantastic. There is some suspense but I don’t do spoilers so get the book and see what I am talking about.
Kate Bradley arrives at her apartment with her now-retired military dog after leaving her military dog-training career ready to start a new life. It’s been nine months since she last stepped into her apartment just before her deployment to Afghanistan. PU! It sure didn’t look or smell like this when she left her boyfriend here, the boyfriend she tried to evict after he refused to pay rent. It smelled bad and looked bad. But what was even worse was finding a naked, post-coital blonde in her bed and a semi-naked soon to be ex-boyfriend coming out of the bathroom. Good thing the police had accompanied her to help her toss out her cheating, now very ex, ex-boyfriend. She couldn’t wait to get to her new sheriff deputy job in Hellfire, Texas. She swears there will be no more men in her life for years. That was before she met former Army Ranger Chance Grayson. Chance wasn’t looking for love either. Too bad sometimes love finds you!
Up in Flames by Elle James is the sixth book in her Hellfire series. Once again this author has developed a smooth-flowing storyline with well-developed characters. There’s lot of action going on in Hellfire this time around complete with bombs going off. I loved all this and just kept turning the pages. This is an intriguing story and I highly recommend it!
Woohoo! Another fantastic book from Elle James. Up In Flames is Ms. James’ latest release in the Hellfire Series (book 6) but this can be read as a standalone. This is a fairly quick read, perfect for those with limited reading time. The characters in this book are phenomenal. Kate brings her military career to an end when she returns from Afghanistan. She already has a new job lined up in Hellfire. All she needs to do now is kick her boyfriend to the curb and collect her belongings. Chance is ex-military and now a firefighter in Hellfire. Chance and Kate’s story is loaded with drama, action, humor, spice and suspense. I loved this book and can’t wait to read my next book by Elle James.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book that I received from a third party. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
This was a wonderful read. The well written, engaging story offers a entertaining blend of romance, drama, suspense, emotion and action. I fell very easily for Chance and Kate. They were extremely likable characters and complexly created. I felt the pull of their attraction and the sparks from their chemistry were very obvious. These two had seen and survived so much; I loved that they found each other and got a shot at happiness. I thought they were perfect for each other. With a story line that was interesting enough to make you not want to quit reading and some steamy scenes, in my opinion this was a five star read!
I have not read the previous stories in the series, and was concerned that would be an issue. Rest assured that it’s definitely a stand alone.
The story revolves around Kate Bradley and Chance Grayson. Kate is a former Army dog handler, and the new deputy in Hellfire, TX. A job she sought after leaving behind the Army and a less than stellar ex.
Chance , a former Army Ranger, suffered a great loss during deployment and still has nightmares. Even surrounded by family and working as a firefighter, he is a shell of his former self. That is, until he meets Kate and her dog.
It’s a story filled with action, new beginnings, hope and the possibility of love. It’s also a story that reminds us of the effects of war and deployment on the brave men and women who are willing to sacrifice theirs lives for our freedom.
I was entrusted a copy of this book. The opinions expressed are solely my own.
Kate Bradley’s done with men and ready to start over with a new job, home and life in Hellfire, Texas. Chance Grayson’s not ready to settle down since he’s still grieving loss and a broken heart from his last tour in Afghanistan. When these two meet they’re determined to just be friends. But the more time they spend together the more they want to be with each other. As Chance is ready to tell Kate how he really feels, an unknown threat has come to Hellfire that could put an end to any chance at love they could have.
This is an entertaining romance with a touch of suspense and drama and a little steamy passion. The characters are well-drawn, and the storyline is engaging, keeping your interest from beginning to end. It’s a quick, easy read and a nice addition to this enjoyable series.
Great story
***Book 6:
5 stars
I purchased a copy of the mildly steamy novel Up in Flames:Hellfire Series book 6: Chance and Kate by Elle James and this review was given freely.
Suspenseful and action packed with some violence,a touch of irony and a hint of steam. Still grieving after losing his girlfriend during their last deployment, restless ex-Army Ranger now full time Hellfire firefighter and EMT Chance Grayson tries to suppress his PTSD and survivor guilt with activity while avoiding his well meaning family until former military police Kate Bradley and her retired service dog Bacchus join the Hellfire police department eliciting feels Chance can’t avoid.
***Book 7: Lily
5 stars
I purchased a copy of the mildly steamy novel Total Meltdown:Hellfire Series book 7: Lily and by Elle James and this review was given freely.
An action packed and emotional crossover novel featuring the Brotherhood Protectors from Montana and a steamy fast paced romance. When Hellfire kindergarten teacher Lily Grayson’s summer plans for traveling as an Au Pair fall through, the father of her favorite student, the wealth widower Antonio “Tony” Delossantos convinces her to watch his children at his Hotel in Manuel Antonio, Costa Rica only to find the cartel kingpin El Patron waiting to exact his revenge.
Up In Flames by Elle James is the sixth book in the Hellfire Series and definitely worth reading.
After being deployed for nine months Kate was coming home and changing things up in her life. First thing is to get her ex out of her apartment, pack up and move to Hellfire Texas and start her new job as a Sheriff’s Deputy. She was looking forward to a quiet small town life and not having to deal with relationship issues.
Chance Grayson had been back in Hellfire for several years working for the fire department and living on his family’s ranch. It was what he had needed after his last deployment where he had lost someone close to him. He wasn’t looking for love or a relationship of any kind when Kate showed up, but he found that he enjoyed her company and they had a lot in common so becoming friends came naturally. When unexplained things start happening in their quiet down right after her arrival he knows that he will do anything that he can to protect her.
I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.
A well written perfectly paced story pulling you in from the start. This is a quick read about Chance and Kate and the action they go through to keep you turning the pages in their adventure. Book six in the series but a standalone read. You don’t have to read the others in order to follow along.
This is book 6 in the Hellfire, Texas series and it features Chance and Kate. He’s carrying around some PTSD from events that happened while deployed. Even though she had previously been deployed, her issues stem from what awaited her after she came home. She’s decided to start over in the small town of Hellfire, Texas. It’s true what they say about love. You find it when you’re not even looking for it.
Fantastic characters! This book has a great story line that was complete with smooth flowing events. I love visiting the wonderful people of Hellfire, Texas!
Up in Flames
Elle James
Kate and Chance were drawn together from the first and they fought the attraction.
Bacchus tends to anchor her while pushing her towards Chance.
A good development of characters whom you can relate to and whom you want to get their happy ever after.
A sweet romance with a touch of suspense.
Once I picked it up couldn’t put it down.
I received a complimentary copy of this book and I am voluntarily reviewing it.
I have waited a long time for this story. This is a great addition to this awesome series. The plot was wonderful and kept me glued to my e-reader. I couldn’t read this fast enough. I cheered when I found out that Chance was next for his’ story. Chance is the former Army turned firefighter, who returned home after losing the love of his life on his last deployment. Kate gets out of the Army with her MWD, Bracchus, and starts fresh in Hellfire, TX as a deputy Sheriff. This is their journey to a HEA. Whew and what a journey it is.
I adore that prior characters make appearances here. Ms. James has done a fantastic job in endearing the entire Grayson family and several others into my heart. I would LOVE to move to Hellfire, TX but now all of the Grayson men are taken!!
I loved the dual POV format here. Seeing how the characters’ thought process is, is wonderful for me to really understand them better.
I highly recommend this story to anyone. You could read it as a stand-alone but why would you when the entire series is wonderful. I will definitely be re-reading it into the future.
For honest review. Kate and her nwd dog Bacchus are ex military going to start a new life after she gets rid of her ex Randy ,then she’s going to hellfire Texas for a job S a sherrif. When she meets chance Grayson he ex military to with some issues too these who are great . Awesome story
Chance a man torn apart by his past. Katie learning to trust and start over in a new town and job. Off the chart chemistry, turmoil and some heat. All combined to make for a read you won’t want to put down.
A quick, easy and very enjoyable read.
The new cop and the fireman both determined to only be friends but sparks were flying. The small town has some criminal activity. Did she bring it with her? I loved the interaction with the K9, the hero of the story. I could see what was coming but I enjoyed the journey of getting there. Hopefully their story will continue in the background of other character’s stories.
