“Much more than a blood-and-guts thriller…An insightful, moving, and sensitive look at what the war did to a country, its people, and its enemies.” – Orlando Sentinel Former army homicide investigator Paul Brenner has just gotten used to the early retirement forced on him after the disastrous end of his last case when his old commanding officer asks him to return for one final mission: … mission: investigate a murder that took place in wartime Vietnam thirty years before. Brenner reluctantly accepts out of curiosity and loyalty…and maybe a touch of boredom. He won’t be bored for long.
Back in Vietnam, Brenner meets expatriate Susan Weber, a woman as exotic, sensual, and dangerous as the nation of her voluntary exile. Brenner is plunged into a world of corruption, lethal double cross, and haunted memories-as he’s suddenly thrust back into a war that neither he nor his country ever really stopped fighting.

Nelson Demille, like John Irving, can take a serious topic and without demeaning it bring a touch of humor to the surface. Up Country is an in depth view of the Vietnam war from the perspective of an American soldier returning to the scene of the debacle. His disregard for protocols versus his quest for the truth is admirable as is his respect …
Definately a five star read. One of the great authors of modern times. I highly recommend this novel.
Nelson DeMille is a fantastic author. When he writes about Vietnam, during and after the war, it is obvious he is speaking from experience. I could feel the oppressive heat, humidity, and smells as I read the book. I enjoyed it so much I had to read it a second time just to savor the experience.
DeMille is one of my favorite authors. Consistently good.
War never leaves you. Once exposed to it, it lives on in the dark recesses of your memory, surfacing every now and then in the form of nightmares or, sometimes, nostalgia. In Up Country, author Nelson DeMille brings back Paul Brenner, the smart-mouth Army criminal investigator from his earlier novel, The General’s Daughter, and together they take …
One of DeMilles best. A Vietnam vet recalls his harrowing experience that he and his unit have kept Secret since returning. But now circumstances may force them to confront those events and bring them to light. Be prepared for the dark reality of warfare and the scars it leaves on some.
I think this book is a little out dated now. I read it some years ago and liked it very much. I recommended it to a co-worker who’s husband was a Huey pilot in Vietnam. She said he read it and enjoyed it a lot..
Excellent plot
Very interesting, informative, and action packed! Loved this book!
I usually love DeMille’s books, but not this one. I found myself bogged down in military references, situations, jargon, strategies, etc.
I think this is DeMille’s best book.
I enjoyed every minute spent in this story. Nelson Demille’s characters are believable and his style keeps the reader interested, descriptions of settings make you feel like you’re there.
Nelson DeMille is a great story teller. His novels are always action packed with in depth character development. I’ve read everything he has written and always wait with anticipation for his latest release.
One of his best
DeMille is my greatest inspiration as an author. Up Country provides the greatest insights into the heart of the Vietnam veteran.
This was a very good read if you like adventure and good writing. Nelson DeMille has written lots of books, some made into movies. He is very good.
LOVE Nelson DeMille’s books!
Nelson Demille is so great at telling a story! He researched this and described Vietnam exactly as I remember it! Love this book!
His books never disappoint! Make sure you read in order because some of the characters follow from book to book.
