Wanted: hot nerd seeks dating coach.Picture this – I’m ready to win back the love of my life, and I’m going big this time. We’re talking boom box, sing her name in the rain, let the whole damn neighborhood know I’m good and ready this time around. After all, if you’re going to grand gesture the ever-loving hell out of a second chance, you need to pull out all the stops. There’s only one little … only one little problem.
My college girlfriend isn’t the one who shows up when I play my “I’ll do anything to win you back” tune. The woman who flings open the second-floor window tells me my ex doesn’t live here anymore. But she’ll help me win her back. Anything for romance, anything for a guy so willing to go big for love. And that’s what I want at first. Until I get to know my new “romance coach” and discover she’s funny, clever, and keeps me on my toes. Now I don’t want to win anyone else’s heart. I want the woman who’s been helping me all along. Trouble is – she thinks I’m in love with someone else, and when we take off on a road trip, everything I think I know about women is about to be unzipped and turned inside out.

To say that I laughed out loud (LOL) while reading Unzipped is an understatement. I was slightly closer to rolling on the floor laughing (ROFL) at certain times. It is a busy time of the year, both personally and professionally. When I’m stressed, I don’t always take time to relax. My nature is to just press on and get stuff done. Since I’ve started reviewing books with the Wickedcoolflight Crew, I have actually made time to relax in my favorite way…reading!! This hilarious book came at the perfect time!! I have read several of Lauren Blakely’s books and really enjoy her writing (and the book covers – HOT stuff) so I was excited to read this romantic comedy.
Finley (BTW…I love this name) is a twenty-nine year old comedy writer whose TV show “Mars and Venus” is on the short list for cancelation. She needs to write six “knock-their-socks-off” episodes in order to convince the network executives to keep her baby alive. What she really needs is some inspiration. Well good inspiration, not like the recommendations that were given to her from Bruce, the network VP in charge of her show. He recommended things like monkeys wearing diapers and kissing scenes. “Mars and Venus” is a quirky show about real life. Findley needs to find funny, real life inspiration. Little does she know that her muse is literally about to interrupt her private time with Ben & Jerry’s Chunky Monkey.
Tom, AKA Kyler, is a reformed college slacker who is now (wait for it) an engineer of thrill rides. He is a nerd after my own heart. I haven’t found many thrill rides that I don’t love so forgive me as I drool over the HOT nerd for a minute. Okay, I’m better now. Tom has decided that the love of his life was his college girlfriend, Cassie, who broke up with him the day after they lost their virginity to each other. Cassie told Tom “Try again when you get your act together. Show up when you know what you want.” After many years of getting his act together, Tom is showing up at Cassie’s town house with the grand gesture . The love of Tom’s life is just behind those curtains that moved or is she? You see, Tom is in Findley’s yard. The townhouse that Cassie owns and uses as an Airbnb but doesn’t actually live in is next door to Findley. Thus begins the thrilling adventures of Findley and Tom.
Unzipped made me happy. I loved laughing and crying (don’t worry is just a tiny bit) at Findley and Tom. Lauren has done a great job developing these characters and their personalities are so loveable. In case you can’t tell, I loved this book so my rating is definitely 5 out of 5 propellers!
Go big or go home right? Well that is the motto in this fun sexy read! I would give it a 4 stars and highly recommend to others.
Tom AKA Kyler is on a mission… he is going to make a big production to get back his ex-girlfriend.. he has finally found his path and life and is ready to show her he is a better man.. the man for her… only one problem his big gesture is used on the wrong girl…..
Finley is a comedian, she has her own show but has recently found that her job may be in jeopardy… she needs a new muse and one just happens to stumble into her path unbeknownst to him..
Finely sets out to help Tom… but both realize that maybe she might not be the wrong girl after all??

Let me begin by saying that I adore any and everything written by Lauren Blakely. But, oh, my gosh, I am in TOTAL LOVE with UNZIPPED. This story stole my heart, from the first chapter to the last, and it has to be one of my favorite LB stories EVER.
Who would think that one mistake would lead to the adventure of a lifetime, and true love with lots of fun along the way? Lauren continues to amaze me with her ability to create stories and characters that charm the ever-loving heck out of me, and make me laugh, swoon, and sizzle, often at the same time. Kyler and Finley may seem like an unlikely couple, but Lauren’s magical touch makes it easy to believe that they were meant to be all along. The fact that these two bring out both the sane and zany, the serious and the fun-loving in each other, cemented them as another favorite couple, and made their story one I’ll happily revisit again and again. Five happy stars for UNZIPPED – I literally could not get enough of this story, and recommend it as a must-read to fans of rom-com, 80’s movies, road trips, and soulmates.
Unzipped is jammed jacked with movie quotes, old song references, and so much geeky-com goodness (yes, I combo-made a new word because this book deserves it). Needless to say, I loved this book the whole way through.
From the beginning where Kyler/Tom makes the decision to win back his college ex-girlfriend with a big gesture, and not just any big gesture, but a movie kind of big gesture, because go big or go home right, unfortunately for Tom, it’s the wrong girl he pulls a Lloyd Dobler on.
The absolute best thing to happen to Finley Barker is to have Tom Sutcliffe show up on her lawn, holding up a giant boombox above his head, belting out an 80’s love song, trying to whoo the wrong girl. Why is it the best thing? Well, she was currently lacking inspiration for her TV comedy show and by some miracle a blessed comedy muse has just landed on her front lawn in the name of Kyler who she renames Tom (you’ll understand when you read the book). Anyway, Tom has just made her day.
Once she meets the man of big gestures and hears his story, Finley knows she needs his a-muse-ment (I love Lauren’s puns) in her life to keep her writing flowing. She agrees to help him track down and win back his ex all for the inspiration exchange.
The more time they spend together the more they inspire each other and that could be a problem, couldn’t it? I mean Tom does want to win back his ex and Finley has been been getting great inspiration for her show, but at what cost? She’s been someone’s #2 pick before and it doesn’t feel great to go all in when that love is unrequited. Tom and Finlay are probably best just being friends, but with all the flirting and banter could they both want more?
Unzipped was quirky and just plain fun to read. I also have to add that quoting movies/TV shows is a huge thing in our household. It is something I grew up doing with my dad, I knew when dating my boyfriend he was my forever man when he easily picked up the geeky habit and we began doing it together. When we had children and they grew they also picked up our movie quoting habits and now as they have begun to date I am proud to say they are finding their own geeky partners in the movie quoting world. I adore this trait so, so much. Tom Sutcliffe is the best kind of nerd!
It’s been a while since my last Lauren Blakely book and I’ve (almost) forgotten how much I enjoyed her writing.
Tom and Finley were a great couple to get to know. I was laughing so hard at the banter between the main MC’s. l loved all the movie quotes. The storyline from how they met to how they fell in love was just perfect. This book was simply a great way to spend my evening.

4.5 stars
I haven’t read much by this author and I really want to read more from her!
Unzipped was such a refreshing, witty book that I fell in love with the characters and their antics!
Finley was really a breath of fresh air, she talked a mile a minute and really did her utmost when helping Tom!
I thought they developed their friendship slowly but surely and really got to know each other well! Well the consistent talking and innuendo’s certainly helped! I giggled, laughed and wanted to be their friend as well! I mean your life would not be dull with them a part of it, thats for sure!
I really enjoyed this rather uplifting book, Loved the way the storyline went and especially how it ended! Who doesn’t love a hot nerd?? Such a great entertaining read!
Lauren Blakely sure knows how to slay me. EVERY DAMN TIME. This book is so stupendously cute! I have to say, Tom and Finley are my new best friends, they’re everything I’d want in besties. They’re the perfect, quintessential, cute couple. Together, they make this book sugary sweet, swoon worthy, and completely adorable. I absolutely LOVE Tom and Finley together!
Let’s start at the beginning…..the meet cute…OMG to pull out the grandest of 80’s rom com grand gestures was amazing. And have it fail soooo epically, I was rolling on the floor laughing. It was too much! This moment sets the tone for the rest of the book. Every movie quote reference, every song lyric, every comedic line was is perfectly timed and ties in so splendidly. It’s like stepping into the best ode to rom coms that you can ever imagine.
Tom is the hunky nerd, stumbling through relationships thinking he’s the bomb. In real life, he’s worked hard to take his first girlfriend’s criticisms to heart and become a dedicated, serious man. Someone who knows what they want and has the determination to seek it out. This pattern is what leads him, albeit mistakenly, to Finley’s doorstep. She is his lobster. From the first minute, the first non-date, she is his missing puzzle piece. With such effortlessness, Lauren Blakely entrapped me in this conversation between them that never ends. They are the couple that talks non-stop about anything and nothing. Their constant banter kept me engaged and flipping the pages tirelessly. I was giddy with every new scene, and swooning constantly.
I’m sad, yet super excited, that this was my last Lauren Blakely novel this year. Every book continuously gets better and better, I can’t wait for what’s in store for 2019. Unzipped is a fresh take on rom com tropes that is a total WINNER!!
Unzipped
Once again this is a rom com that will leave you wanting more….
This is a wickedly awesome roller coaster ride as Finley a sexy, beautiful, funny, girl next door agrees to help Kyler AKA Tom reconnect with his college love Cassie. During the ride each of the characters learn valuable relationship tips and learn the importance of being present. Lauren has once again mastered the storyline to orchestrated a story that makes you laugh, cry, hope, love and believe in happiness. This is definitely a five star read with sexy chemistry that will leave you a book boyfriend and a definite hangover.
Finley meets Kyler when he comes to reclaim his college girlfriend with a grand “Say Anything,” gesture. Unfortunately, or rather, fortunately, he has the wrong address and is aiming his boombox at Finley’s window instead. And so begins this hilarious rom-com filled with famous movie quotes, writing tropes and a cute furry friend. The characters are likeable, and you can’t help but root for their HEA.
UnZipped by Lauren Blakely was an honest to god, feel good, loved every moment of it story. It’s the ;meet-cute’ to end all ‘meet-cutes’. So simple and yet so darned funny!!
Kyler Sutcliffe, or Tom as he comes to be know as, is at an impasse in his life. He thinks he lost ‘the one’ way back in college when he way unceremoniously dumped by Cassie, his then girlfriend. Now, eight years later, he’s done what she suggested back then. He’s got his act together, he’s got a great job that he loves and all is right in his world. Except for that one thing. He doesn’t have the girl. But, he’s determined to change all that. He knows where she lives and he’s got a plan to win her back.
Go big or go home! Is his motto and that’s what he sets out to do.
He’s gonna wow her back into his life and himself back into her heart.
He’s got ‘the song’, he’s got the boom box and…
After singing his heart out, he discovers that Cassie isn’t even home. Infact, he’s at the wrong house entirely.
Finley Barker, loves comedy. She lives and writes it, and sees the funny side in everything. It’s her world, but that world is hanging out by the edge of its teeth! So, when a priceless piece of comedic genius falls into her lap by way of Tom, she knows just what to do.
This guy is hopeless in love and she is determined to set him straight.
Lessons in how to be the perfect boyfriend, a road trip with stops along the way, fun, laughter and a montage of movie scenes expressing their feeling and Tom and Finley don’t know where pretend ends and reality takes over.
Will they side off into the sunset together or will the be forever searching for their missing half?
Gosh, I can’t tell you how much I enjoyed this book. It was super, super good and so much fan to read. A humorous, delightful warm-hearted story from start to finish.
I love this one! It’s Unzipped written by the amazing Lauren Blakely. This book brought back so many memories of all of my favorite movies from the 80’s! This poor guy decides to do an “80’s approach” to winning the girl of his dreams….except for one little problem…. she isn’t the one that he serenades. When his serenadee decides to help him on his quest, lines get crossed and his goal gets blurred. Can he convince her to give him a chance? It’s a fun time to read of their quest! You are going to love this one too!!
This is a fun, quirky, sweetly romantic book. I was sucked in from the very beginning where Kyler aka. Tom senerades who he thought was his college sweetheart to a very bad singing performance. It turned out the woman listening to him make a fool of himself wasn’t his former girlfriend afterall, it was a total stranger. Finley was shocked, who was this strange man singing his heart out to her window? He is adorable but can’t sing at all. When he explains what his plan was Finley decides to help him complete his mission. Maybe he can help her too.
This book was a thrill to read. I loved how it referenced lots of rom-com movies and all the famous lines from them. It was a flash from my past reading them. I loved how Kyler was so lost when it came to communicating with women as lots of men are. I loved that even though Finley knew she was going to get her heart broke she was still willing to help Kyler (Tom).
This author always makes me laugh and have all the “feel goods” as well as swell my heart up with undeniable love from her characters. This is no different, I laughed, felt good and could root for Tom that he would finally get it and see what was right in front of him. My heart broke for Finley at times but loved how her character just keep going no matter what. This is a great book. I received an early copy to read and review. I loved it and highly recommend it.
Lauren Blakely is my go to author when I need a LOL book! Tom is my man! He is such a sweet dork and will have you wanting to wrap him up in bubble wrap. Seriously, that was my though in the beginning of this book! He had an innocence that made ME want to hold his hand along his journey of winning the girl back! Ha! Was I so wrong lol. He knew what he wanted and when he met Finley, BOOM! Chemistry was there and Tom just knew what to do.
Unzipped made me giddy and loving each of these characters in their own way. This is another must read and I cannot wait until I get my hands on the audio version. I am hearing great things about that as well!
“Laughter is my music.”
Did you like the 80’s?
Do you speak movie references?
Are you a fan of great romantic gestures?
If you answer “yes” to one or all then let me tell you that Lauren Blakely has the book for YOU. Unzipped has all this awesomeness and more. With a quirky, funny heroine and a clueless, sexy nerd, this story had me snorting and swoony in one breath.
I loved the chemistry between both main characters. I love that the author never fails to give her audience these characters that you would love to meet and friend in real life. The originality in this particular story doesn’t take away the beauty in what we find familiar when reading a romantic comedy.
…great rom-coms had all the answers to the heart…
That is exactly what Unzipped does. I love this Lauren Blakely original and I have a feeling you will too.
When Quirky Meets Quirky – And In A Cool Way!
There wasn’t much that I just didn’t love about this book. The story line wasn’t new, but it was delivered in a fresh way. Finley was my kinda gal. As Kyler called her, she is hot in an oddball sort of way. She was a complete goofball and she was fantastically imperfect, who was perfect just for him. She is a script writer and has her own comedy show on tv that may or may not be renewed for the next season. She needs a new muse to help her creative juices flow. In struts Lloyd Dobler…… well Kyler impersonating Lloyd and acting out his classic scene. But it all fails dramatically when he starts singing to the wrong girl. The big romantic grand gesture flopped like a non scary rollercoaster. So Kyler, or as Finley likes to call him, Tom, sets about finding the girl and setting things right, only it takes on a whole new meaning half way through their road trip.
Tom was such a romantic, and I adore that. Just because one grand gesture didn’t work, it didn’t stop him from trying again. It was clear from the onset that this couple were just meant to be. He was her lobster and she was his everything girl. The banter between them flowed so naturally and I loved all the movie references. I am a big movie buff too, and I wish I could remember the lines verbatim like they did, it was extremely savvy. And once Tom took off his rose coloured glass from what he thought he wanted, things started to get very interesting indeed. Their oddities worked well together and they were each others kind of crazy.
If you are in the mood for some humor, light comedic banter and lots of movie quotations and lines, then you are going to love this book. I am marking it as one of my favourites from this author.
Lauren has done it again. This one is yet another hilarious ride . As soon as the audiobook was out I had to get it and listen to it. Both Joe & Andi have done a fabulous job in bringing live to the story and characters. I can’t wait to get my hands on the book once it’s published. This one is sure a must read/listen and a reread worthy book. I am guilty of already listening to the audiobook twice and I can listen to it again and again. Lauren just blew me away with her epic writing in unzipped. Definitely a must read/ listen.
ARC received for an honest review
Lauren Blakely, you had me at Lloyd Dobler.
Then Kyler had me with all his 80s movie references.
From the moment he “Doblers” Finley, I was hooked. And so was Finley, and I can’t blame the girl.
Unzipped is a cute, sweet and adorable strangers-to-friends-to-lovers story, and I was swept up in their lives.
I freaking love Finley, her sass and snark towards Kyler made me laugh and smile the whole time I was reading.
Kyler is geeky and awkward and kinda clueless when it comes to the lady, however that just makes him all the more adorable.
There are lots of brothers and family and other characters that we meet in this story, so I do hope we get more of them in the future (I know some do, but to quote Freddie Mercury, I Want It All)
This Kyler is mine, so run out and get your own.
I actually listened to this book on audio before I read it and I have to say I enjoyed listening to Unzipped but reading it gave me a whole different dimension to this extremely funny book. It may have been a quick read but it still had everything I look for in a fun book, it’s not complicated it made me laugh and it has its fair share of hot under the collar moments. Kyler and Finley are the perfect match they share a love of cinema and roller coasters and I loved the quotes that popped up throughout this book from some of the greatest movies ever released.
Finlay is a television writer and is desperately trying to get the network to run a second season of her not watched much show. Kyler is trying to read every romance book he can get his hands on in the hope of picking up some tips on love and relationships and a chance meeting with Finlay starts a friendship of two people being sounding boards and educators for each other. Friendship soon turns into so much more in this funny romantic comedy.
If you love romantic comedy you will want to one click this very funny book.
**I voluntarily read an early copy of this title in exchange for an honest review**
Lauren Blakely’s Unzipped is a fun friends to lovers romantic comedy that is chock full of quotes from so many awesome 80’s movies! Such a fun read!
When we meet Kyler (Tom), he has his heart set on reconnecting, and winning back, his college sweetheart. He might have been immature when they were together originally, but now he’s grown up and is ready for a serious relationship. He makes plans and he goes to make a grand gesture at her home, but when he comes face to face with the woman living in the house, she is not at all Cassie, the woman he is looking for.
Finley, who makes her living writing comedy shows, sees the “show” put on by Tom she is immediately amused and when she finds out what he is trying to do, she explains that her neighbor is who he is looking for, but that she’s never around. Instead of turning him away completely, she tells him that she’ll help him figure out another way to work on getting Cassie back – a way that will present him in the best light possible.
As Finley and Tom spend time together, they learn more and more about one another and we as readers are treated to not only an amazing walk down memory lane with the use of the 80’s movie lines, but also their talk of all of the possible romantic tropes is another amazing part of this book. The question is, as these two friends work to help one another, will their feelings for one another grow?
I enjoyed this book quite a bit and the adventure that Blakely took us on was full of the ups and downs that you experience not only in a relationship, but on rollercoasters too! If you’re looking for a book that will make you smile, this one will definitely do it!
He was raised by WOLVES!!! Well, not really. His mother died when he was young. His father was extremely busy working to grow his business. His older brothers stepped in to help raise and protect him. So, he has grown up totally clueless about the female mind and emotions. Oh, let’s also not forget he went to an all boys school. Tom is an easy going, intelligent, hot nerd. It is his good guy personae that will deliver him from his shortcomings with women.
Searching for his first love for a second chance is the logical solution in his analytical mind. She was the only woman who ever made him feel connected. Only one problem, he is forgetting years have passed. Not only he has grown up and matured, but she has also moved on. This is the one little detail that has not entered into his scheme.
This is a funny and enlightening story of Tom’s pursuit for his perfect mate and connecting emotionally with someone. Teaming up with crazy, off the walls Finley is just the right foil to make him grow to understand women. This is his delightful journey of enlightenment while he forges a strong friendship with Finley. If you love movies and meaningful quotes you will absolutely love this journey too.
Romance can be found in all sorts of situations. In this case, it is losing your fear of heights and bungee jumping to happiness!
I am voluntarily reviewing this book. Thanks to the author for sharing a copy with me.
