*This is the first in a Violent Circle Comedy spinoff series. It’s not necessary to read the Violent Circle Series first, and each novel can be read as a standalone.
I’m in over my head.
My decision to run from my comfortable upper-class life was an impulsive one, but I’m determined not to regret it. It’s true I have no car, have already been fired from my first job, and can’t cook without … without starting a fire, but I can do this. Anything is better than the life I was raised to lead as some successful man’s arm candy.
I’m adjusting to my new circumstances living with three roommates on Violent Circle, a neighborhood known for being eccentric at best and an insanity filled edible trip any other day. On my own for the first time, I am quickly realizing there’s a lot I need to learn, so signing up for the adulting club that teaches life skills at college seems like the perfect solution.
That is, until I walk into the first meeting and come face to face with my gorgeous economics teacher. Screw learning how to change a tire or file your taxes.
There are much more adult things I want this man to teach me.

S.M. Shade’s Violent Circle NEVER disappoints! Crazy antics, self-discovery, the best lines, and just laugh out loud funny!! Kelly is finally on her own and figuring out life for herself. Kelly ends up as Layton’s student in his economics class and his adulting class. Layton and Kelly end up with an attraction for each other, but we all know student/teacher relationships are against the rules. I loved this book so much! These stories always make me want to move to Violent Circle. The book has great new characters and is full of hysterical moments!
Kelly’s gotten away from her rich, controlling parents. She’s living in a weird neighborhood, called the Violent Circle, with some awesome roommates, and she’s taking classes as the local college. She’s unsure what she wants to do with her life, and she’s even taking a Adulting class. Yep. And then she falls into a thing with her Econ professor, who just may end up teaching her more than just some Econ theory…
I seriously was not expecting how freaking funny this would be! So be forewarned that if you are planning on drinking while reading, you may want to not, otherwise you may end up spitting out your drink onto someone . Kelly and her new roommies/friends, Layton and his friends have typical and hilarious college experiences, but they just made the story all the more fun and were the best part of the story. But that’s not to say that Kelly and Layton’s relationship is not interesting, because it is actually – it’s sweet and slow burn, and this couple is adorable together. All in all, this is a hilarious, sweet rom-com that absolutely should not be missed.
Have you every been just about to fall asleep and your brain decides to think random questions like “does a penguin have knees?” After reading this book it gonna be about crabs and walking sideways.
This is the new series set in Violent Circle, the characters are new with a few familiar faces thrown in and the hilarity that reigns in the circle is still as much a part of their day to day life as always.
Layton and Kelly are sweet together and some of the tor curling embarrassment she faces during their courtship will have you laughing out loud and actually blushing for her.
Excellent writing by S.M as usual and I truly can’t wait for more.
Kelly Bryant has decided to follow her own dreams and not what her parents want from her but that means starting over and she soon finds herself living on “Violent” Circle. But now with Kelly’s new freedom comes a concern about what she wants to do with her life.
Layton Aldrich is an Economics Professor who enjoys teaching at the local college and also runs an Adulting Club where students can learn the basics of being out on there own and learn to fix things.
When Layton and Kelly meet both are attracted to one another but how far is either willing to go when Layton’s job is on the line?
This is another incredible book from the author and every time I read another one of her books I wonder how she can come up with so many incredible events and laugh out loud moments.
I was super proud of Kelly for knowing how much she was going to give up by living her own life and that being said I was so proud of her for living her own life and not what her parents expected of her. Her parents seem like total jerks after what they did to both her and her brother. The events surrounding swimming had me laughing so hard! I liked that she found a job that she was well suited to and really enjoyed!
Layton was a young professor who was also trying to figure out what he wanted to do and whether teaching was really what he wanted. I absolutely loved his grandma and I hope that is who I will be like when I get older! I liked that Layton was really aware of the students around him and knew that his club could teach kids with practical tools that they needed to have to get by.
There were so many incidents between Layton and Kelly that had me laughing so hard from drunk kisses to so much more that can’t be spoiled!! I laughed so hard when Midnight grabbed something he shouldn’t have and I can only imagine how mortified I would have been!
I was so mad at Layton after a certain incident and he really needed to grow up a little!
I was honestly shocked towards the end at what happened to Layton as I wasn’t expecting part of it but I also knew it was inevitable. I was glad that Travis gave Layton the push he needed and that he got everything together for the end!
The end of the book was awesome with camping and I laughed so hard at some of the events!
Can’t wait for more in this series!!
This book had me laughing so much it started to hurt and I didn’t want it to end. Kelly traded her very cushy life to one of broke college student but she is loving every moment of being in control of life now but when she meets her new teacher she has something other then studying on her mind. I can’t wait to see what this series will bring!!
I really liked this story, it was different than what I’m used to reading!
Are you guys ready to go back to Violent Circle? Looking for a fun laugh out loud read? Grab this one, it’s a fabulously fun read! I’m so glad that S.M. Shade decided to take us back to Violet Circle this is just the fun, crazy read that we all need right now.
I missed all the shaninigans that is Violet Circle. Kelly now lives there where her brother Trey used to live with her three roommates. Parties are had, cops are called, and Kelly falls for her gorgeous teacher. Layton really isn’t into teaching this year and claims it to be his last, but when he falls for a student the depiction is made for him when they let him go. These two are great together. Loved the banter and wittiness that goes into these books. Such a great read!
I LOVED THIS BOOK!! This book will make you laugh out loud multiple times while reading it. It is funny and oo so good. If you need a pick me up something that is just going to make you feel good then this is a book you do not want to miss. This book is linked to the Violent Circle series and is just as funny as those ones.
“When he pulls away, cheers are added to the laughter, and I cover my mouth at the sight of the sign affixed to the back of what is no longer my car. Fist me like a Muppet. I love it. “That one was my idea,” Serena says through her laughter.”
Honestly you do not want to miss this book it is hilarious!
I have received a free copy of this book for an honest review.
I am going to start this review by saying I think SM Shade is my favorite RomCom author. Her books I find humourous and leave me laughing out loud to her characters antics. Unsupervised is a Violent Circle spin-off but you don’t have to read the first series to understand what is going on. Kelly and Layton and their forbidden romance will have you in stitches as the come full circle to their attraction. I am a SM Shade fan and I can not wait to see how the rest of this series pans out.
Have you read SM Shade before? Well if so, it won’t come as a surprise that this book is filled with the funny. The way this author depicts the culture of those living “the low income lifestyle” is priceless. (Like my wordplay there, haha). This author excels at being causal for my snort laughs as I read the ridiculous mayhem she is known for writing. Help, is it possible to drown in hilarity?!
Our young heroine, Kelly is amazingly strong and has had to fight to create her own life. Ugh her parents are turds. Moving into Violent Circle and having some interesting girl roommates was fodder for all kinds of crazy. This story is actually very touching when I wasn’t howling in laughter. Finding your tribe and continuing to search for your purpose is wonderfully explored in this book.
Our sexy, smart hero Layton is dealing with his own life issues and trying to figure his next steps personally and professionally. The reality of a somewhat forbidden romance was done perfectly. In today’s world the student/teacher thing is definitely NOT smart.
Random thoughts on this story: I will never look at a Capri Sun the same way again. Umm what I learned about the male anatomy was ummm, enlightening and I only thought to be rumor.
Lastly, I have to say I NEEDED this book. Real life is crazy right now for the world at large. This story filled with sarcasm and zinger one liners was just what the doctor ordered.
Thanks again for the laughter Ms Shade. Happy Reading Everybody!!!
Kelly has broken away from her controlling parents to live her own life. She decides to take classes. Leyton is an Economics teacher while working on a side project he plans to move on to after the year. When the two meet the attraction is instant. There are so many hilarious moments in this story. A funny, cute story with steam.
Another laugh out loud, tears streaming down my face, cant breath book by SM Shade.
This is the first book of Shade’s new spinoff series of Violent Circle. Being back on Violent Circle is a dream come true.
I Iove the taboo aspect of Kelly and Layton. I think Kelly is an amazing role model. She decided to live her life on her terms and nobody else’s. That choice leads her to Violent Circle. And there, new friendships are formed, relationships blossom, and of course hilarity ensues.
A great start to what will be a fantastic series
De-café Review:
Kelly Bryant: Kelly is breaking free from her wealthy parents’ control. She is trying college and for the first time in her life she is completely on her own. She does have some support from her older brother and 3 roommates. Kelly struggle to find her path is completely relatable. Not everything is perfect on the first try.
Layton Aldrich: Layton himself is struggling with his own path in life. He is an economics professor at the local college, but he isn’t sure teaching is his passion. I
The spark of Kelly and Layton seem to have instant spark of attraction but there is a slow burn quality to it. It takes both awhile to act on and move forward on their attraction. I love the added push of them together by Layton’s grandmother, she was a surprise and wonderful addition to the story. Midnight the dog was also a great surprise comic relief.
This was a perfect lighthearted New Adult rom-com. New Adult is not a typically subgenre I love but I do like an age gap. I felt S.M. Shade gave the perfect background to the character of Kelly to explain her lack of worldly knowledge. I excited to read the stories of the supporting characters in this book. She created a world that was realistic and relatable. I enjoyed watching the evolution of Kelly and I was a little disappointed to not get a bigger glimpse of her future. I had so many laugh out loud moments in this book! The quirkiness of the situations and the characters was fantastic. This was the perfect balance of laughter and romance. This was the perfect escape for me and a 4/5
I have not read the original “VioleNt Circle” books but I will be going back.
So good to be back with the neighborhood, Violent Circle! Crazy as ever!
Kelly, is finally on her own and are starting to find herself. Layton, a couple of years older, are also finding himself.
“When things are all falling apart around you, sometimes all you can do is laugh, then scoop up the pieces and try to fix it.”
Oh man, how I laughed and laughed. How I tried to hid from the embarrassing moments the poor Kelly had. And her unfiltered mouth!
“Dropping my voice a little, I turn to Serena. “It’s like a mouse darting back into it’s hole. Do they always do that?”

I loved Kelly so much. Her ridiculously awkward moments made me love her even more and had me laughing out loud. Kelly’s group of friends were exactly what she needed for this phase in her life, encouraging, honest, loyal, loving, and a whole lot of crazy. The perfect new characters for the old neighborhood we all love.
Kelly and Layton had amazingly entertaining banter and instant chemistry made for a whole lot of adorable with a delicious slow burn.
I’m so excited about what’s to come with this group
This was not what I’m used to reading from this author it is a fun cute romance with a slice of the forbidden. Kelly having been sheltered by her parents is sweet and fun but a little naive, detetmined to stand on her own two feet she moves out of home. I loved her flatmates and the way they encourage her to be brave often with hilarious results. When she meets Layton it seems like she has met someone she can explore her sexuality but then the bomb drops that he is her teacher. I loved Layton he is a warm likeable character who has his crew of friends who all made me giggle when they get together. This was a fun start to a new series.
BRILLIANT! I laughed so much reading this that some scenes kept on popping into my mind days later! Such a fantastic read! Excellent storyline, great characters, sexy, clutsy, ditzy, funny and just fab! Best mood lifting read. Put a huge smile on my face and naughty giggles for days!
I was not prepared for just how funny this book would be! I read the Violent Circle series and cried tears of laughter but Unsupervised had me crying, snorting and may or may not have peed a little. This book was so much more than a taboo Professor/student story that I honestly forgot about the taboo aspect and just focused on the hilarity. It took me longer to read this book than I should have, simply because there were so many times that I just had to go back and re-read what I had read because I just NEEDED to read it again to make sure it said what it did and it was as funny as I thought, spoiler alert….it was just as funny. This book has everything from “angry sinks” to tampon stealing dogs and I can’t wait to read it again.
This is not a spoiler. This is more of “what you may not want to do while reading Unsupervised”
-eat
-drink
-read in crowded public places (unless you don’t mind attention)
THIS BOOK WILL MAKE YOU LAUGH OUT LOUD
Where to begin…
Starters – This is the first S.M. Sade book I’ve ever read. I do not regret that Unsupervised was my introductory novel to S.M.’s world. I regret that I’ve had some of her other novels in my TBR pile, and they have languished there. That was my error.
Unsupervised is the first in a new spin off series from S.M.’s Violent Circle books. You do not have to have read the Violent Circle books in order to read or enjoy Unsupervised. As I mentioned, this was my first novel by this author. I enjoyed it and didn’t feel I needed to know any further back stories to enjoy it. There are one or two references to the “Frat Hell” boys, and our female lead in Unsupervised is the younger sister of one of the Violent Circle guys, but those are peripheral items.
At its core, this book is a forbidden romance wrapped around two coming of age stories.
The forbidden part is that Kelly, our lead female, is a student and our male lead, Layton, is a professor at Kelly’s college.
I have to say, the professor/student trope is one of my favorites. S.M. handles this relationship beautifully as well as a little differently than I’ve seen before.
At varying points of the book, one or the other leads holds the “position of power” in the relationship. Very well done! These changes and hand offs flowed seamlessly and weren’t forced.
The coming of age bit is shared in a way with both our leads. For Kelly it is a very literal coming of age. She leaves her controlling parents and their cash heavy lifestyle, breaks an arranged engagement, strikes out on her own and starts figuring out her life.
Kelly is supported with a crazy and wonderful set of ladies whom she rooms with. These gals personify #squadgoals. They made me wish I was still 20 something and could live with my besties. S.M. also manages to drop nuggets of wisdom within feminist rants and witty snarky banter. Again – total respect!
Layton’s coming of age is a little bit less in your face. Throughout the book we pick up tidbits of Layton’s past life, his deepening displeasure with his current career path, and what he’d like to do “when he grows up”. His coming of age quietly unfolds in the background of the story. A subplot that is gently handled.
Kelly and Layton are backed by cameos of Violent Circle residents, Layton’s best friends, Kelly’s roomies, and a very intriguing trio of college guys that Kelly and her roomies befriend.
I’ll be on the lookout for Dalton’s story (Layton’s friend) and Owen’s story (Class Clown College guy..and I think my book boyfriend from this novel)
I mentioned funny. I did not lie.
S.M. provides us with multiple scenes that include (but are not limited to)
-outspoken retirement home residents
-what I will term “Misadventures in Adulting Club”
-a robotic vacuum….that swears
-people hiding in bushes, half naked, after a drunken bout of B&E resulting in a midnight swim, thus leading to cop avoidance
-utilizing Capri Sun juice pouches in a very adult analogy
-mud wrestling gone wrong
And….
-what not to do with a baby swing.
Needless to say, after reading Unsupervised I will no longer be able to be near Capri Suns and be able to behave in an adult manner. Given that I have two kids and multiple nieces/nephews…this will pose an uncomfortable, however, unavoidable situation.
Additionally, I swear that S.M. contacted my own college friend squad because the baby swing scene has occurred. I was there, I saw it, I was useless..but in our situation…911 was not needed.
Finally, Dalton’s experiences during the camping trip will forever make me second guess camping with my friends. Ever again.
S.M. Shade, your book was an absolute fun and throughly entertaining read. I’ll be digging into my TBR pile to get to the Frat Hell boys. PLEASE write Owen and Dalton’s stories??? I think those guys will be epically wonderful.
