*This is the first in a Violent Circle Comedy spinoff series. It’s not necessary to read the Violent Circle Series first, and each novel can be read as a standalone.
I’m in over my head.
My decision to run from my comfortable upper-class life was an impulsive one, but I’m determined not to regret it. It’s true I have no car, have already been fired from my first job, and can’t cook without … without starting a fire, but I can do this. Anything is better than the life I was raised to lead as some successful man’s arm candy.
I’m adjusting to my new circumstances living with three roommates on Violent Circle, a neighborhood known for being eccentric at best and an insanity filled edible trip any other day. On my own for the first time, I am quickly realizing there’s a lot I need to learn, so signing up for the adulting club that teaches life skills at college seems like the perfect solution.
That is, until I walk into the first meeting and come face to face with my gorgeous economics teacher. Screw learning how to change a tire or file your taxes.
There are much more adult things I want this man to teach me.

Kelly is striking out and throwing herself into life, she wants life on her own terms, not just to be the arm candy token wife expected from her.
She’s doing pretty good until she meets Layton and complications of the Heart ensue.
This is a fun and endearing read!! Although its a loose teacher/Pupil romance , a genre i’m not always keen on, I really did enjoy my time with this couple and their friends. Their antics kept me awwing and oooing, laughing, smiling and entertained from beginning to end !! Enough Said !!!!
4.5 stars
Another S.M. Shade romcom is a success! It was nice to be back on Violent Circle again, this time with a mostly new crew. We follow Kelly who recently decided to escape the life her parent’s dictated for her. And while it’s difficult she’s determined to make it on her own. When she meets Layton things get complicated even more… because he’s her teacher. I highly recommend Unsupervised, you’ll want to get this one!
Prepare to laugh through this whole book!
S.M. Shade created such a playful and relatable character with Kelly. All of your ‘coming of age’ fears happen and it’s just amazing. The banter between all of the characters is refreshingly comical. This storyline hits all the taboo points of teacher/ student and age gap (slight) in all the best ways. There’s even a dog!
This book is full of humor, relatable moments, steam, and a fun love story. I almost fell out of bed a few times laughing. Especially when she labeled his name on her phone as “TILF”! It was awesome.
Kelly is so relatable because we’ve all been there. Trying to figure out what it is we want in life and truly having to find ourselves. SHe’s awkward, funny, but so thoughtful at the same time. I loved her fire, intelligence and appreciated her determination for life.
Layton is an awesome character who is someone you just know you want to be friends with. He’s charming, smart, dedicated, and thoughtful. It helps he’s sexy as hell too. 😉 I loved his love for his grandmother. She’s a pip too! He too is just trying to figure out what he wants to do with life too, just in a different way.
Their journey together was a bit bumpy but relatable. His reactions to things were quite humorous. I loved the whole story, and can’t wait to read more from this author.
I absolutely loved reading Unsupervised. Perhaps not quite as much as Overachiever, which is the next book in the series, and I blame Owen for that. What can I say…. I adore that man! BUT what this book had that Overachiever doesn’t is that moment when I just sat back and swooned. You’ll know exactly which scene that is, when you read the book!
You’ve probably realised that I’m reading the series out of order, but having devoured Overachiever yesterday, I couldn’t resist diving straight into this book and I have loved every moment!! I’ve been able to get to know Kelly and Layton as this is their story and I was rooting for them from the word go!! These two amazing individuals meet at the wrong time in their lives and I sincerely hoped that they would overcome all the obstacles standing in their way and allow themselves to be together.
I loved the humour that this college gang bring to these stories and I was laughing out loud multiple times throughout the story. The residents of Violent Circle are a little crazy too. Everyone added to the story perfectly!
Another fantastic, fun and light read by S.M. Shade. I can’t see what this author gives us next!
Hilarious! I’ve volunteered to review this book for United Indie Book Blog. This is my first time reading one of S.M.Shade books. This is the first book in the Slumming it series. It’s about Kelly and gorgeous economics teacher. Layton is an economics professor at the local college. He is also struggling with his own path in life. Kelly rebelling after her arranged engagement disaster, so she is starting college late. These two together are sweet. Fate has a way of throwing people together when they are perfect for each other. The banter between these two are awkward at times but also sweet. This story has fun, even more fun, more passionate and more sweet. You WILL not be disappointed in this one. I can’t wait to read the next one in this series. If you love to read about taboo of a teacher/student then is the one for you. Keep up the awesome work!
I loved Unsupervised! The first book in a spinoff series from her outrageously funny Violent Circle series, Unsupervised was just as witty and well written as the previous series and I found myself laughing out loud quite often. Looking forward to the next book in this series.
Funny entertaining. Hilarious
Shade provides the perfect comic relief to help break up a book funk and during such a stressful time. I always know I can count on her warped mind to create laugh out loud scenes that have me cracking up laughing.
I loved being back in the Violent Circle neighborhood. I can’t wait for more!!!
After loving the Violent Circle series, I was so excited when this author announced a spin off series! Unsupervised is the first book in that series and it didn’t disappoint at all. It felt so good to be back in this setting. This romantic comedy had me laughing out loud and swooning for this book boyfriend and I loved every minute of it!
You don’t have to read the previous series, but I definitely recommend it. We get glimpses of characters we’ve already met and the neighborhood is just as crazy as it was before. Kelly’s roommates are hilarious and I loved that they were there for her finding her own way in this new life she’s building for herself.
I’m normally not a fan of forbidden romances, but this one isn’t full of angst at all. Layton and Kelly are such fun characters and I loved them together. Kelly is so much fun. She’s exploring what she wants, but also let’s herself relax a bit. Layton is a teacher, but he’s not sure it’s for him yet. And a man who learns songs on a piano to make his grandmother happy, definitely scores points in my book.
All in all, another great romantic comedy by this author. She knows how to put everything I need in books like this. I can’t wait to get my hands on the next one!
Get ready the crew from Violent Circle are back and Kelly is the next addition. Kelly is frat boy Trey’s younger sister. She is breaking away from her overbearing parents and will try to make it on her own. When your dad tries to arrange your marriage ..you may be better off to your own Unsupervised Devices!
Layton is a man struggling to figure out his true career path. He has taken a job as an adjunct professor of economics but is it truly his calling? He is such a caring, compassionate man that just needs a sign.
A taboo attraction to your professor, a crazy cast of characters, a girl trying to find her way in the world! Get ready for Kelly’s try at trail blazing through life on her own devices ! Is she the sign that Layton needed all along?
Sweet, Funny, emotional and romantic !!

Unsupervised was such a fun read! The things that comes out of Kelly’s mouth plus her crazy group of friends had me laughing out loud several times! It starts off with Kelly and Layton in a student/teacher relationship but as they spend more time together, they realize their attraction to each other. There is a lot for them to navigate through but it shows that they are truly meant for each other.
This is the first book by SM Shade I have read and I am intrigued by the Violent Circle group that I am going to read the books this series is a spin-off of.
Hilarious! A rollicking great story with lots of belly laughs and some heartfelt moments. I had a great time reading this story that went by so fast. I wanted my HEA but I also wanted more fun moments with Kelly and Layton!
Kelly and her brother Trey broke out from their overbearing, snobbish and demanding parents. Trey went out first, made a good life for himself, has a girlfriend and baby. Then he encouraged Kelly to do the same and paid for her tuition in college. So from a life of privilege, Kelly went on to being on her own, in an apartment with three other roommates, located in a government housing complex. At nineteen years of age, she’s now beginning to find out what it is to be an independent adult and she’s finding it confusing, daunting, and like she’s wandering aimlessly, not knowing what she wants to do.
She starts on college classes, trying to find out what she likes, what she’s good for. She finds some adulting classes and signs in, to learn how to function better. I loved this story because it was about the growing up of a young woman, finding herself. She had grown up very sheltered, living a life of limited freedom, and now she’s stretching out her wings and finding her way.
She meets Layton in her economics class but he’s not a fellow student, he’s the professor. Later on, when she assists to her first adulting class she finds he’s the professor there too. He certainly doesn’t look like an Economics professor!
“They are absolutely not supposed to be that young, move with that kind of grace, or have a smile that makes me want to jump on the desk and throw my panties at him.”
Layton feels attracted to Kelly but it’s an impossible situation given she’s his student. There’s also the difference in age since he’s twenty-eight to her nineteen. Even so, the heart wants and when he appears to piano lessons at the place where Kelly’s working at, it all seems like systems go. They enjoy the same things, he loves the person that she is, and she’s very kind to his grandmother who lives in a home. They are a great match, except for the student/professor obstacle.
The story develops at a great clip with some hysterically funny moments (and a funny icky one!). This author has a lighthearted writing style that I loved. At the same time that Kelly seems clueless, we also find that she’s very introspective and inquiring, and she never stops in her quest to find what she wants and who she wants to be. She stumbles around a little bit but little by little she gets it. She also has the help of her roommates, who are supportive, encouraging and educative. Good times are had by all and I ended up enchanted with this funny and feel good love story.
S.M. Shade was the first author I ever started to read Rom Com genre type books. I have to say she is definitely my favorite! She can get me to laugh out loud every time I read one. This book links along with her frat hell series and is about Trey’s sister Kelly. The pull between Layton and Kelly can be felt right from the start, you can tell he feels something just from when they first meet. For her being “inexperienced” she definitely feels something for him. While reading this book you literally laugh out loud while seeing all the oops moments that seem to happen between the two leading up to where they will go in the end. S.M. Shade is one of my favorite authors and I can’t recommend this book or any of her books enough!
S.M. Shade is a great author to read if you need a good laugh. Her books are hilarious. I hated leaving Violent Circle, so I was thrilled to return. This one was slightly a little taboo-ish, but not really. I loved that Kelly had her quirks and imperfections and that there was someone for her that thought they made her sweet and cute. I need to find one of those. Need more Violent Circle in my life.
S.M shade does it again. She never disappoints when she brings us back to Violent Circle. So many laughs and inside about whats been going on in the block. Ofc this is Kelly and Laytons book and let me tell you, your not going to want to miss this story.
*WARNING* story contains explicit adult content
I don’t know how S.M. Shade comes up with such outrageous characters, but I am certainly glad for however you done! I enjoyed this story a lot with its rom-comy feel and its hilarity. The story does have meaning, but delivered it a light and easy going manor. This is all about a young woman getting out from under her overbearing and manipulative patents and becoming her own adult. Great book. Well written. I can’t wait for book 2.
O.M.G… This author just gets better and better. I’m already in love with this spin-off and I can’t wait to see what else she has in store for us.
This was such a fun read. During this trying times, we could all use a little bit of fun and laughter. I can’t wait to see what’s next.
Unsupervised was an amusing story that will have you laughing from the first chapter. This novel included romantic comedy and also student/teacher forbidden trope into one awesome story. The main characters Kelly and Layton had an instant attraction but their story was a sweet slow burn and you will love these two together. The story included a cast of secondary characters mainly the couple’s friends who greatly added to the story and made it that much more hilarious. This novel was fun, sweet, steamy and charming and you will be unable to put it down. It was an entertaining read and I would recommend it to all lovers of romcom.
