*This is the first in a Violent Circle Comedy spinoff series. It’s not necessary to read the Violent Circle Series first, and each novel can be read as a standalone.
I’m in over my head.
My decision to run from my comfortable upper-class life was an impulsive one, but I’m determined not to regret it. It’s true I have no car, have already been fired from my first job, and can’t cook without … without starting a fire, but I can do this. Anything is better than the life I was raised to lead as some successful man’s arm candy.
I’m adjusting to my new circumstances living with three roommates on Violent Circle, a neighborhood known for being eccentric at best and an insanity filled edible trip any other day. On my own for the first time, I am quickly realizing there’s a lot I need to learn, so signing up for the adulting club that teaches life skills at college seems like the perfect solution.
That is, until I walk into the first meeting and come face to face with my gorgeous economics teacher. Screw learning how to change a tire or file your taxes.
There are much more adult things I want this man to teach me.

This is the 1st in a new series and what a fantastic beginning this is! Kelly is starting a new life more suited to what she wants, rather than privileged life with her controlling parents. When she signs up at the local college, she meets Layton who is one of the teachers, and is instantly drawn to him. This is a beautifully written story which is fun, entertaining, and an all-round hilarious read, with some crazy and funny secondary characters, which all had me totally hooked from the beginning. I highly recommend for all readers.
If you are looking for a light hearted spring read then this book is perfect for just that. It had the attraction I wanted from the characters, the witty banter, entertaining plot and character interaction with the support long characters.
Layton has such a good heart. I loved that about him. Kelly was a little uptight but I loved the times when she let lose and let go of the past and embraced the now. The banter between these two and the awkward moments were sweet.
I loved the plot. It had a little forbidden feel to it, and I loved that. It wasn’t over the top but student teacher is one of my favorites. There wasn’t a ton of drama, which was expected because it’s a rom-com.
Laytons grandmother was a hoot. I loved her and her witty banter. We didn’t see too much of her in this book but she honestly made an impression with me. All the other side characters were great. I really liked Owen and hope he gets a book next. Kelly’s roommates were great for her. I really felt like she needed them to help her let lose and embrace who she was.
Overall it was super cute and kept me hooked right from the start. There were a few scenes that I couldn’t help but laugh out loud from and very lovable characters. I can’t wait for the next book. 4 stars #2OCCJD
Unsupervised is a romantic comedy that is a little taboo and thoroughly entertaining. Layton and Kelly have an unmistakable connection and one that neither of them can seem to stay away from. As they walk a thin line between breaking the rules and following the guidelines, you will be left laughing out loud at situations and funny unexpected ramblings. A story that will not only give you romance, heat and emotion but one that will lighten your heart and soul when we all can do with a big old dose of that.
4 super cute stars!!
This is the first book in the “Slumming It” series but I believe can be read as a stand alone. If you are familiar with this author then know this is a spin-off from “Violent Circle” series.
I am always drawn to this author. The first book I read of hers was “Worth It” and that was some years ago and it is still my number one book of all time. Then I read her “Violent Circle” series and laughed my ass off. Now I am prepared for a whole new group of friends. I can’t wait.
This book was cute and funny. I def was digging the main couple. I love Kelly. I love how she finds her footing and speaks her mind. She cracks me up!! Her counter part, Layton is super hot and I was all aboard these two hooking up.
Loved seeing Trey and what him and Sasha are up to. Also, you hell doesn’t wanna heat about Barney?!?! LOL.
This book is laid back and the start to another amazing series. I am counting on some hilarious books to come!! This book felt familiar but I enjoyed reading it quite a bit.
**I received this book as an ARC and in return gave my honest review**
Hilarious! SM Shade had me cracking up laughing all over the place again! She knows how to write some super funny and awkward scenes! Virgin falls for her teacher….. completely inexperienced (despite the fact that she was previously engaged) and not wanting to tell him…. you can only imagine how that plays out. It is another great example of how the people of Viole(n)t Circle are crazy AF, party like its 1999…. but still come together for each other when ever they need it! I love this community. And even though it isn’t exactly the same people as before, the community feel is all the same. With all the craziness…. drunk parties….. police visits….ALL the greatness you expect from the tenants of Viole(n)t Circle…. just a new class! Definitely a one click in my opinion. Who doesn’t need a whole lot of laughs in their life? SM Shade made my day with this book! Love it!
Warning – you will absolutely laugh out loud REPEATEDLY during this book! I’m a little scared of Shade’s mind, some of the things she comes up with are crazy, but they make for wonderful stories.
Kelly and Layton are college student and professor, and neither are necessarily happy in their roles. Kelly is reclaiming her life, she’s always been expected to look pretty and not think, now she wants to make something of herself and stand on her own two feet. Her hilarious roommates appear to be Slumming It’s answer to Frat Hell, and they are wonderful!
Helping Kelly through horrible dates, parties that have mud wrestling (yup not kidding), daddy issues, and several other first experiences, these girls are #squadgoals
Just one important thing, by the end of this book, you will NEVER EVER EVER look at a Capri Sun in the same way again! I had water come out of my nose Shade!
Unsupervised by S.M. Shade is the first book in her brand-new romantic comedy series, Slumming It! If you’ve read the Violent Circle series (I highly recommend it if you haven’t) then you may recognize the setting and a few of the characters. Ladies and gents, these books (this one included) are HILARIOUS. S.M. Shade comes up with some laugh out loud lines so make sure you’re not drinking or eating when reading it! I laughed my butt off!
Now, while this is a romantic comedy it’s also a forbidden, student/teacher romance. Normally these types of books fall in an angsty category but not this one. It’s just fun! Kelly is a 19-year-old college student who has left her privileged lifestyle for one better suited to her needs. She doesn’t want or need the ex-fiancé her parents arranged for her, nor does she need the constant nit picking from her parents. So, she drops that lifestyle and moves in with a few roommates at Violent Circle. When she starts college, she meets a man who is clearly all wrong for her. Or is he? He’s a teacher after all. What happens with these two will light your fire and make you laugh uncontrollably!
If you’re looking for a romantic comedy look no further. You’re going to want to give this book a try because it’s too good to miss out on! Again, I also recommend the entire Violent Circle series (each book can stand alone) and Worth It in which she co-wrote with CM Owns (funnies book I’ve EVER read).
I absolutely love the Violent Circle series by S.M. Shade. Unsupervised is part of the Slumming It Series a spinoff of Violent Circle.
Just like the first series this book is hilariously funny, I highly recommend not drinking any liquid while reading this or there’s a possibility of it coming out of your nose lol.
Kelly Bryant the little sister to Trey she followed in her big bros footsteps and left their controlling parents. She moves into Frat hell with 3 roommates, and of course the chaos begins. From the start to finish this book draws you in and you don’t want to stop turning the pages and of course its hilarious.
This is a must 5 star read.
The light hearted love that I needed during such dark times, I was THRILLED to return to Violent Circle with a bunch of new faces and loved the peek at some of the old favorites as well.
Favorite line with no context – “I don’t care if he’s the green Teletubby. Did he break your lawn chair?” – I snort laughed very unattractively throughout this book but it was worth every second!
Kelly is starting college late after rebelling against her arranged engagement disaster. While starting over with next to nothing (which is a sharp contrast to her wealthy, want-for-nothing childhood) she moves in with a trio of friends to save money while she figures out where to even begin to think about going as a career path. Her innocence and inexperience finds her in class with Layton, her teacher.
Layton, also fresh off a relationship, is an economics professor trying to figure out if teaching is a path he wants to continue down. He’s still figuring out who he wants to be and finds a kindred spirit in Kelly, too bad she’s a student and OFF LIMITS.
These two together are sweet and bumbling along while fate just keeps throwing them together. The hi jinx of the neighborhood will make anyone laugh and the things these two get into, could not put it down, absolutely just what I needed! I hope we get to see more of Layton’s Grandma too she was a trip!
Well. I just laughed so hard, I snorted sweet tea, so thanks for that.
This author should come with a warning sign. Like don’t even bother trying to consume anything while you read, you’ll regret it.
First she destroyed me with a rockstar duet, then she made me cackle. Like a hyena. I can’t.
Kelly is trying to make it on her own. Figure out adulting now that she’s basically cut off, although, she’s really not good at it. (Although I’m not judging. I still can’t cook. )
I’m not gonna tell you a whole lot, just prepare yourself for uncontrollable laughter, and maybe to learn a few lessons. But definitely, definitely read this.
I haven’t laughed so hard in months! It’s good to be back on Violent Circle. There is the familiar characters of the complex and the girls that moved into the old Frat Hell apartment. Kelly is the sister of Troy that lived in Frat Hell. Kelly is trying to break away from her upper-middle class family and doing things on her own. Layton is the new Econ professor who is trying to figure out what he wants out of life. Kelly and Layton’s story is funny and spellbinding. The neighborhood hasn’t changed, it’s still wild and hilarious. S.M. Shade will write a story that will leave you in stitches.
The residence of Violent Circle are back!!!!
This time around we are getting Kelly the sister to one of the Frat Hell boys Trey. How is life in Violent Circle going to be for her? What can life have in store for a nineteen year old girl that has been sheltered all her life? How about crazy, crazy with a side of hilarious. Layton is someone that doesn’t live in Violent Circle, but he brings in his own bag of nut cases. So when you have these two characters come together there is just pure comical gold.
I was one of those readers that was saddened when the end of The Violent Circle Series came, so when I found out that there was going to be a spin-off I was completely on board. I mean Shade is the master of the romcom so I just knew that she was going to kill it with this spin-off.
4% in and the laughing started. That was the mark that there was going to be non stop laughs for this one. And I was right. The way that the characters interacted together was the one thing that had me laughing so hard that there was moments of tears. Yes tears from laughing so hard. Thank God I didn’t laugh till I peed that would of been some crazy shit.
Now I know some people are worried that there is no way that this spin-off could ever live up to the craziness that was The Violent Circle, and all I can say to that is don’t come into this book looking for that series. This is a whole new series with new characters. Is there a chance that some of the old characters will make an appearance, well in this book there was a few.
Shade has the perfect recipe to make the reader laugh and love each of her characters. And this goes for the supporting characters as well. I’ve already got a list of characters that I hope will have their own book with this series.
And I will leave this review with a thank you to SM Shade for making it so that I will never look at a Capri Sun or juicebox the same ever again.
S M Shade hasn’t lost her hilarious personality which seeps into this book, making it a fantastic comedy that will keep you hooked from the start.
If you have read and loved the Violent Circle books then this is the 1st book in her new spin off series that sees past characters stop by and make an appearance.
This is Kelly and Layton’s story and is absolutely brilliant with yet more fun loving characters and a great storyline.
Loved every single word.
Sweet, Sassy, Funny, Kind & Horny Girls Have Taken Over The Frat Hell House!! A 4.5 Star Gigglefest
Unsupervised (Slumming It #1)
This is book #1 in the ‘VioleNt Circle’ spin-off series & I’m very happy to report it doesn’t disappoint!!
Kelly, Trey’s little sister, has followed in his footsteps & broken away from their controlling parents! She couldn’t face the life they had mapped out for her & definitely couldn’t marry the man they had her engaged to, She couldn’t stand him, so she blew up that life & Trey let her take over the lease of Frat Hell!! She’s gotten herself 3 new roommates – Zara, Remee & Serena. They’re all besties but fully embrace Kelly into the fold!
Leyton is an Economics Teacher at College. He thought that’s what he wanted to do with his degree but he’s finding it far less rewarding than he expected! He dabbles with his own portfolio on the side but one of his besties, Travis, has put his name forward to a Company looking for a freelance Economist. He’s actually quite excited by the prospect & is starting to consider whether to continue with Teaching after this Semester!!
I loved how hard Kelly was fighting to find her footing in this new world she stepped into. If she faultered her girlfriends stepped in to pull her back up & showed her how far she’d really come! Her sweetness & innocence shone through the page. Her double entendres were absolutely hilarious, I have the exact same issue & it’s darn embarrassing, and reading how they occurred was a hoot! Layton was really decent, funny guy, although 8 yrs older. In fact his buddies & him interact much like Trey & co did. How they came together wasn’t creepy at all and neither are they as a couple! Plus I loved his Nan. I bet a book set in that care home would leave us rolling around in tears of laughter!
This is fabulous escapism. It has daft situations which left me snort laughing & heart ache which left me gutted!! Overall it’s just a wonderful read!!

Oh my! I love returning to Violet Circle and the craziness that comes with it. This book is hilarious. I was totally laughing our loud. Kelly is so innocent. I love that she’s striving for independence from her parents and not backing down. Learning to be an adult is more difficult than you would think. Falling for your teacher, not a good idea. Layton is such a good guy. He got my heart too.
If you’re looking for a laugh out loud rom com, look no further. Shade will have you cracking up with the new tenants of the Violent Circle!
Kelly and Layton are the two characters that start the spin off.
Kelly is witty and funny in the way when someone doesn’t realize they’re that funny. Some of the stuff that happens to her and the words that come out of her mouth will have you belly laughing.
Layton is the older guy that still has the 16 year old sense of humor he’s trying to grow out of. He’s funny and he knows it. He’s also the perfect boyfriend for sooo many different reasons. He can roll with what ever comes his way while keeping a smile.
These two were the perfect picks for the beginning of the Slumming It series!
I can’t wait for more of these crazy characters!
