For Kendall Martin, a small, remote village in Southwest Alaska seems like a good place to start over. On the run from an abusive relationship, she leaves everything familiar behind and begins a new life as owner of a small souvenir and sportsman trading post in picturesque Staamat.
Denn Nulo knows everyone in town: he’s the Chief of Police in Staamat. He’s lived there all his life, except for … except for his college years, spent in Anchorage. Originally planning on practicing criminal law and living in Anchorage permanently, Denn is forced to change his plans when he receives word that his widowed mother has passed away, leaving his young sister, Luna, alone. Denn comes back to Staamat to care for Luna.
When Kendall meets Denn, she begins to believe there are truly good men in the world. Denn is everything she wants: strong, loving, dedicated to family, protective… and patient. There is instant attraction between them, but Kendall is leery of men, and Denn craves a serious relationship that includes marriage and children. Their courtship is a conflicting mix of hesitancy and passion, with Luna, desperately needing a mother figure in her life, cheering them on.
As Kendall learns how to trust again and her romance with Denn grows more intense, a local woman who’s had her eye on Denn for years releases a torrent of damaging jealousy… and the nightmare from Kendall’s past discovers where she’s hidden herself.

Chaffin was a new author for me and this book did not let me down. It was well written, but there did seem to be a lack of adequate research on diabetes that slightly detracted from the story. It included adventure, violence, marital cheating, domestic abuse, suspense and romance among other things. However, it had more romance and less …
Loved It
What a great story about a woman who gets herself away from an abusive man. Kendall has changed her nay and has moved herself to Alaska. Denn is the police chief of the small town and is raising his younger sister. He doesn’t know her past, but he will help her.
Kept me interested
Poor writing, interactions between characters was cheesy
I enjoyed the storyline and the background of Alaska. It kept my interest from the first page.
Loved it.
This was a good read. The characters were well written and the story line believable and interesting. Especially liked the jealousy angle in the story, It was unusual and written in a way that was true to life and not overdone. I would recommend this book.
Sounded good, but it was vry slow and I got so bored.
This was an amazing book. Loved every minute of it. The bad guy was truly bad and well worth hating. But the ending was worth the reading. Sometimes you just have to take a chance and restart your life all over again and for the better.
Great
Really enjoyed this book. Heroine escapes from a terrifying, abusive relationship and lands with a new identity in nowhere, Alaska. She catches the eyes of the local cop. He’s a great guy and has his hands full taking care of his kid sister. I also love the fabulous villains in this story–the young local woman who thinks the cop is HERS as well …
Pretty typical of the genre
kept me interested
The ending surprised me.
I always love stories that take place in Alaska. This is a scary tale of a woman escaping an abusive relationship. It is also a realistic romance. A great read!
Can you imagine needing to get away from your fiancé so badly that you have to change your name and move to another state? That’s what Kendall had to do. She even changed her appearance then bought a shop in a tiny town in Alaska to get away from the psychotic, abusive man. She was sure he’d never find her there. But she didn’t count on other …
At first I thought I wasn’t going to enjoy this book but half way through the book, I was on pins and needles with anticipation with all of the characters. Great book.
I liked the book. It held my interest and kept me wanting to keep reading. Loved the setting. It wouldn’t been nice if Kendal had fought back just a little instead of being another helpless female.
