My proper southern belle mama might disagree, but I say I was born to be a rebel. From the second I got my hands on a pair of drumsticks, my future was sealed. I never fit in anyway, not with my rocker soul and curves that never take a day off.But what’s a drummer without a band? Oh, that’s right. A cocktail waitress. That is, until the chance of a lifetime falls into my lap—Unrequited needs a … lifetime falls into my lap—Unrequited needs a drummer, and I happen to have an ‘in’ with the band.
The only trouble is, Santiago Garza, Unrequited’s broody, scowly bassist, doesn’t want me in his band, which is kind of funny, considering he was the one who took my heart and stomped all over it five years ago.
My career is far more important than hurt feelings though, so Santiago can suck it up and deal. That’s what I’m doing, no matter how many times I remember the feel of his lips on mine. I won’t fall for him this time. I’m done being anyone’s second choice.

I think I’m obsessed with Mauve. She is the embodiment of what a heroine should be, she was flawed yet perfect and owned everything and stuck up for herself and knew her worth like no other and wouldn’t let haters get to her! Santiago was broody and in his own head to much but Mauve brought out a different side to him. They both have past hurts they need to overcome and to read it was perfect. This is a new author to me but I can’t wait to read her other stories!
Unrequited is the first book in the series, which is a spin off from the Blue is the Color series. Right from the start this series draws you in. Maeve and Santiago have a past, so you could say this is a second chance romance. Maeve also is one that shows you can be a strong female lead who doesn’t fit the supermodel image. I also liked how we have a female drummer, most books have the female as managers or other parts of the band, not being in the actual band so this was a great change of pace. The author does a great job in going from the present to the past and back again. There are surprises to the story in which it didn’t go as I was predicting and that is always great when stories are unpredictable. This was a great start to this new series and I am looking forward to the next in the series.
Amazing second chance romance with all the passion, sexiness, and awesome heroine. Maeve is curvy but confident and doesn’t take crap from anyone. I love seeing how she goes about doing what she is happy doing even if it’s not what society thinks is acceptable for a girl. She literally ROCKS! Her and Santi had a lot to get through with past hurts but under it all, you can still feel their passion and chemistry and love towards each other.
I received a free copy of this book via Booksprout and am voluntarily leaving a review.
If you are a fan of the Blue is the Color Series or just a fan of Julia Wolf, this is a must read. Even if you haven’t read any of Ms. Wolf’s previous works but like rock star stories, this is a must read. Ms. Wolf creates wonderful characters. You will fall in love not just with the main characters Santiago “Santi” and Maeve but also most of the secondary characters as well, leaving you waiting for their stories.
Maeve has become one of my all time favorite characters. She is a curvy, rebellious, bad-ass drummer that sounds like a southern belle. She never lived up to her mother’s ideals as the perfect southern belle. She was too curvy and outspoken. She secretly took drum lessons instead of instruments her mother approved of. Only a few people knew she played drums for years.
At 18, the summer after graduation, Maeve hung out at her best friend Yael’s house where she watched and listened to her friends “Mo” Moses, and “Murray” band practice. Maeve would practice her drums in the morning before the band arrived. One morning Santiago arrived early and saw her play. He joined her playing as well. Maeve ended up falling for the older musician but unfortunately at the end of the summer, he broke her heart. Santiago and Mo’s band went off to become famous.
She rejected college and went to the West Coast with her friend Haven and Haven’s younger brother Liam to pursue her own musical career. Maeve became a real bad-ass drummer with her own unique style. Things didn’t work out for them in LA so they returned to the east coast ending up in New York. One night, while waiting tables in NY, Maeve runs into Mo’s now famous band minus a drummer. Yael secretly brings the band to see Maeve play and gets her an audition. But can Maeve work and play with the man who broke her heart 5 years ago??
Ms Wolf makes it so I can’t wait for Mo and Murray’s stories and I truly hope we get Haven’s story as well. She brings her characters to life so you fall in love with all of them. She even made Santiago’s younger brother Diego someone I cared about by the end and now wonder about his story.
You will love this story as much as I did and will look forward to more as well.
This is my first book from Julia Wolf, but won’t be my last! Santiago and Maeve have a past. It’s one she’d like to forget, but they have two different recollections of things. Santiago is attracted to Maeve and always has been. When the band he’s in, Unrequited, gets the opportunity to experience Maeve play the drums, they know they’re onto something! She wants to push the past and her feelings aside and just enjoy playing drums with the band. Santiago wants to ignore the pull between them and just do his job. But that pull was delicious! I liked the slow burn between them. I loved seeing a strong female embracing who she is and being a badass drummer! While these guys are rockstars, there is a realness to them and the reader can identify what they’re going through. I really enjoyed this book and didn’t want to put it down!
Julia Wolf is the queen of rock star romances! I loved the message throughout the book that just because your body doesn’t look like a model’s you’re not good enough. I can’t say enough about this slow burn, second chance romance with its steamy AF scenes.
To all the girls who feel they aren’t enough because they aren’t a size 6! You are, and you can be a ROCK GODDESS! Maeve proves in spades that not only can she rock it on the drums, but she can fight through the pervasive bull hockey that permeates our society with what is considered beauty. I truly appreciated the way all through the book when a fan or reporter called Maeve “drummer girl,” she corrected them by referring to herself as “drummer.” Girls can and do shred on the drums. Thank you, Julia Wolf, for giving us a girl to pull for who doesn’t have a perfect body. Too often, when I read about “curvy” girls who are supposedly comfortable with themselves, they only go on to lose weight and all at once the hero “sees” them as beautiful. Excuse me, weren’t they beautiful before? Maeve eats! Maeve drinks! Maeve dresses how Maeve wants to dress! Maeve loves to buy band shirts from Hot Topic! Do people say stupid stuff to her? Yes. It hurts her, but Maeve is incredibly resilient and knows her drumming speaks for itself. She’s genuinely one of the gutsiest girls I’ve read about in a long time.
Santi and Maeve’s relationship is one that has to build. Trust has to be re-won, old hurts overcome, and familial relationships need adjusting. Santi and Maeve both have to open up to each other, which is not something either is prone. But it slowly happens, and they make lovely music together. There’s a reason why bass and drums are considered the heartbeat of a band. Santi and Maeve are it.
The rest of the book is filled with a delightful cast of characters I am sure we will get to know as Julia writes this world. What will happen with Mo as he grows into the man/boy/rock star? Haven, will she get her revenge on her nemesis? Will Murray and Yael ever start talking to each other and delve into what’s actually going on there? And will Murray do it wearing a housedress or walking on his hands? What about Liam, Haven’s brother (such a sweet boy)? And of course, everyone needs to know what happens next for Theo. These are the ways a great author gets us to buy-in for the entire series with just the first book — well-played, Julia, well-played.
Another fantastic rocker romance story that you will in a few hours. Once I started Maeve’s and Santiago’s story I just couldn’t put it down. Between the story and characters you are swept into another world that you just fall in love with. Another recommended read that will leave wanting more.
I received a complimentary ARC – early release copy of this book in Kindle format from the author for review purposes.
This is the start of a brand new series of rockstars and the band is called Unrequited. It stars Mauve and Santiago as bandmates that find love in this second chance at love story.
I really enjoyed the romance and story though at times I felt Santiago was not always the guy I wanted him to be for M. But what I loved was that M is such a strong woman and when he doesn’t side with her she fights him hard and shows him how strong she can be.
S is also an older guy to M and so at times that gets in the way off their future. M is a drummer and she is totally badass. Years before she was friends with Mo and his sister. Mo is in the Unrequited band and they have lost their drummer to rehab and so they need a drummer asap. That’s how M ends up on the road with them as they play concerts.
S never thought he was good enough for M and well M thought she was not attractive enough for S. When it really was about her being 18 and him 25 and his brother liking her. Now his brother is no longer around and they are older and wiser and he wants a second shot with M.
This was an awesome rocker romance and I highly loved it. I loved that it is not about the typical rocker lifestyle and that it gets a bit deeper into who the characters are and their motivation. I absolutely cannot wait for more in this series. It was so great.
Dedication rocks!!
Maeve gets a chance to live her dream – problem is that it is with a band whose bassist is the guy that broke her heart at eighteen with his callousness. Seeing her come into her own as a rocker drummer was great to see. Santiago had a lot to make up for…which he finally does…before he blows it again!
There are many things to love about Maeve – her strong personality, her rocker drummer ways, her curves – it is great to see a beautiful woman who is real and not Barbie like!! And her bartending ways via “Coyote Ugly” – oh hail yeah!!
This sums up Santi – “Wanting Maeve wasn’t a question. Keeping her, however…that was what I was clueless about.”
It’s a good rocker romance with a strong female lead.
I voluntarily requested and read an advance reader copy.
Maeve is a bad-ass. She is my new favorite female character. She is a strong and beautiful woman and I love how she guards herself in the beginning but you see her come into herself by the end. Also, no one writes a sex scene like Julia Wolf!!! Great book. Read it now!
The storyline was well written and the characters were so well created that as each and every page was turned I felt that Maeve and Santiago pulled me right into their story as it unfolded!
Before I starting reading Unrequited, I wondered how easy it would be to adjust to a new rockstar book. I mean, Blue Is The Color set a certain standard for me. But it did not take any longer than the first page for me to be hooked on Maeve and Santiago’s story. It held my attention from beginning to end. Maeve’s character was epic and I will not forget her anytime soon. Now for Santi… I wanted to punch him in the face and them love him forever. I understood his intentions from the beginning but it still stung at times! I absolutely love the protectiveness he gave Maeve and all the sweet words he would say to her. So very swoon worthy! And that epilogue?! Oh how wonderful it was and so happy with the ending! (Even though I am so not ready to be done with them.) 🙂
This was a refreshing spin on the Rockstar romance trope, and I enjoyed it immensely!
Maeve is a sweet southern belle with an incredible talent for the drums and a deep history with the members of the band, Unrequited. Seeing her put Santi in his place, take no BS from anyone and grow into herself was so fantastic.
The romance element was hot as Hades and the story well crafted.
Recommend!
There are books I enjoy and there are books that touch my soul and leave a mark on me. I have a lot of authors whom I enjoy reading for various reasons. But a select few that I literally get gitty whenever I find out a new book is coming out. I don’t know how she does it but each of her books draws you in, Making you feel so connected to the characters like it’s your own life. You’re experiencing the heartbreak, the joys. All of these different emotions and I can’t express enough what an amazing talent that it.
As always Julia did not disappoint. I love Mae’s character. She’s sweet and innocent yet rebellious and so true to herself. The growth during the book is so well developed. I love the approach of her not being super skinny and I don’t mean that negatively towards smaller girls. It felt like such a big message of size doesn’t matter. Love isn’t conditional on that. So that really spoke to me.
This isn’t a book you want to miss! I don’t know why I was so surprised at how much I adored this book. I always feel that way about any book she writes. She’s one of those authors who never leaves me feeling like it was rushed or the story didn’t dig deep enough.
I love the ways Julia brought Mae and Santi together. It felt so organic! Can’t wait for the next book!!
Another great rockstars romance!
Nobody writes rockstar romance like Julia! I loved Maeve and Santiago(Santi)! They were perfect for each other. They share a painful past but old feelings comeback. Can they fight them or finally act on them? If this first book in the Unrequited Series is any indication then the rest of the series is going to be fantastic! I can’t wait for the next book! I wonder who’s story is going to be next!
This is the 1st in a new series from this talented author, and nobody writes about rock stars like she does! Maeve is given the chance to follow her dreams as a drummer for a band, however, Santiago the bassist does not want her to join them. These two have a past, and it was great to read about how their relationship develops. This is a beautifully written story which is emotional, humorous, and an all-round entertaining read which had me totally captivated throughout this addictive page turner. I cannot wait to read more in this fantastic series and I highly recommend for all.
I need to start with how delighted I am that Julia Wolf is treating us to a new rockstar series!! Her Blue Is The Color series ranks high on my list of favorite series. After reading Unrequited, I see some stiff competition for the Blue Boys.
I absolutely loved this book! Maeve is every woman who’s ever been told she doesn’t fit the mold. She owns her curves and sways those hips to the beat of her own drum. When she’s on stage, those drums get louder. This southern peach rocks with the best of them. She’s the beating pulse bringing the show to life.
Santiago is the older, sexy bassist. He’s rough around the edges and has a heart of gold underneath his rugged exterior. He brings the dash of angst and alpha sexiness I yearn for in a book. He’s conflicted, broody and I can’t get enough of him.
The secondary characters are standouts in this novel as well. Mo and Murray make for some great laughs and I can’t wait to read more about them.Yael and Haven are there for all your girl support needs.
You can not go wrong with a Julia Wolf novel and Unrequited is no exception. Santiago and Maeve’s story will captivate you from the first few pages. Go ahead and cancel those plans! Or at least get this book in your hands. It’s full of heart, laughs and more euphemisms for dick than you can imagine! Let’s face it, now you’re intrigued!
Cupid Crips For Life
Good story with likeable characters, I loved the Rock star premise
I just want to start off by saying I have yet to read anything by Julia Wolf that I didn’t love! Unrequited was no different! These characters were so easy to connect with and I fell in love with them! I dont think there is a girl/woman out there that couldn’t connect with Maeve in some way. The fact that she is a bad a** rockstar is just icing on the cake!
