Let’s start by saying that I absolutely loved reading this book.
I think I haven’t taken so much time to word my review for a book in a long time.
I edited and deleted my review and then simply gave up because words were failing me to describe what a fucked up and beautifully tragic this story is.
*Deep breathes* This book isn’t for the faint of heart. It will push you to your limits and definitely made me uncomfortable, angry and downright emotional as I progressed each chapter.
This book is as dark as it can be and you will not like, almost hate MAX BENNET, but hold on because I don’t know how but the author made me feel for him.
As the author shows us little by little what circumstances mde him what he is. Why indeed he is a monster?
Addison, sweet Addison she might look like a pushover but I say she is a brave girl who didn’t forget her endgame even when she was falling in love with the monster.
I think even though love and romance was uttered maybe once in the whole plot, it was with actions that the author showed us that even in murkiest, toxic and dirty souls, love can blossom. I absolutely loved how the characters progressed with each other.
The chemistry between the MAX & ADDISON is sizzling and dirty. some kinky and hot s3x between max and our sweet Addison. The sex scenes are melted my Kindle and made me drink water at every turn. *Phew*
A dark 5 read
Oh wow 5 star’s just does not do this book justice. This book had me on the edge of my seat as I kept turning one page after another. This story will take you on one whirlwind of a ride wondering when you’ll be able to get off…it’s that intense, but holy hell did I love it….I couldn’t stop if I had wanted to.
Addison is a girl who’s life hasn’t been champagne and roses…no she comes from a family where violence, blood, death go hand in hand she’s always tried to find the good in people, but after she is taken by Max she thinks he’s the Devil incarnate, but he makes her feel thing’s that she knows is wrong.
Max is one dangerous sob he’s someone you never want to cross, because you never know if you’ll be alive the next day. He’s taken Addison for a debt her father owes him, but there’s a secret Max is keeping for the real reason he’s taken Addison. She’s soon getting under his skin and he knows he can’t damage the merchandise or the deal falls through he has to remind himself, so he doesn’t kill her.
This was one spunky girl she never stopped trying to get away from him no matter how bad it got for her she challenges him on everything. I kept thinking girl you need to stop before you get killed. This book has triggers all over the place so heed the warning if you have triggers, but if you love dark intense reads and have no triggers you definitely need to one click this book.
There is no way to be ready for this one. It’s best to go in blind and get swept away by the ravaging storm that is Max and Addison so you can rage with them. Circumstance has well and truly screwed them both time and again. Addison has compartmentalized so much of the bad and managed to remain open to feeling where Max is concerned. Max, poor Max, is a monster of the worst kind. Why? Because he still has a heart, will deny it, and truly doesn’t want one. What purpose does it serve when he’s bound to the course before him regardless? So with their destiny set, both have a game to play. This relationship is going to get ugly before it ever can look like something beautiful. But the feeling, that’s going to be apparent whether either of them want to be honest about it. And the reader has to wonder, what happens when the devil will scorch the earth for you? Is it better to lie down with monsters than sleep with the sheep? If the monster is Max, it’s a risk that seems worth taking time and again.
I just finished reading my ARC copy and HOLY SHIT!!!! What the actual F did I just read!
KV Rose knows how to write dark romance that really f*cks with your head!
This book was amaaaaaaazing. I am a huge fan of her writing so I already knew that I would love this book.
The best part? Even if it was only the tiniest little bit – JEREMIAH FREAKIN RAIN aka my man that was just the icing on the cake.
If you think that you are going to read this book and fall in love with Max, think again. He is cold, dark, ruthless and just bloody lethal! I spent the whole time HATING him! I have finished the book HATING HIM! I honestly have no idea HOW Addison could ever have feelings for him. There is just no way he could ever redeem himself.
The thing about Unorthodox is that every single character has a really dark past. They have all experienced pain, trauma and abuse.
Dante. Oh my heart. I just can’t. I love him. My emotions went haywire when it came to Dante. I don’t know why KV would do this to us!!!
Long story short. This book is effed up in so many ways but it is one of those books that will have you gripping the edge of your chair and your heart pumping a million beats per minute! It is dark, delicious and will rip all of your emotions apart. I was hooked right from the start and binge read the whole entire thing in a matter of hours.
Now I am slowly DYING and needing the next book NOW!!!!
Oh my, Max. He was dark, evil, broken. So many times I wished I crawl into my book and hold him, heal his damaged heart. I love him and I’m not sorry about it!
I couldn’t imagine the life Addison lived growing up. I wished I could save her myself. It sad that even monster like this, really do exist.
I loved everything about this book and the characters. And I especially loved the epilogue with the crossover!! I was NOT expecting that at all.
I devoured this book. Literally couldn’t put it down. If you are into dark romance, then I highly recommend this to you. There are some awesome-I mean, gruesome scenes so if you’re not into that type of stuff then this wouldn’t be for you.
I wanted to cry when I finished this book. I cannot wait for the second. KV Rose is so brilliant. Her words, her writing style, everything. Her books never fail me. I can read the same one over and over, that’s how good they are.
Every last book has me feeling every emotion one can feel, while reading. These characters and words break me. And I’m fine with it. It’s worth it. Also, they make for the best quotes.
One of my favorite scenes:
Sleeping with the devil shouldn’t feel like heaven.
Pinning one arm over my head, he glares down at me.
Keeping my eyes on his, I tell him, “make it hell.”
Max is cruel, ruthless, abusive, and feels like a straight up villain for majority of the book. I wanted to cut his balls off and spit in his face, but somehow by the end, the author made me actually fucking FEEL for this monster of a man.
The ending broke my fucking heart, and I cried for him. I cried for this angry, brutal, twisted human being. That’s some damn good writing, y’all!
If you have any triggers at all, run the other way, but if you’re a fan of dark reads with multifaceted, morally bankrupt heroes, go in with an open mind, and give this one a try! It’s captivating, suspenseful, steamy, and fucked up in pretty much every way! I loved it!
Ok, before I write about this brutal and unbelievable dark disturbing book, I have decided not to read any dark romances for the rest of the year I write for the rest of the year because I know I just can’t stop reading dark romances .
But this one was just too much for me.
This book was just too dark and has absolutely nothing to do with romance.
It won’t surprise me if I get nightmares after reading it
This book describes the world of human traffickers and drug cartels.
Very brutal and inhuman world, with no conscience or mercy for the people or children who have been enslaved.
I would probably never get the things that have been described here out of my head and I’m used to a lot in this genre.
The problem with this book is that it doesn’t pause with the ugliness of the story and has not an ounce of balance on the romance/good side of it.
I still don’t know why I’m doing this to myself, but the way it always is in my case, when I start reading, I just can’t stop
I don’t know who recommended this book to me, but please don’t do it again with books like this one
I need at least a little romance in a book for me to like this.
Warning:
This book describes so many different methods of sexual abuse that it is impossible to list all of them. So be warned before you think about reading it. It’s nothing romantic or pretty in this book.
This book ends with a cliffhanger and of course without HEA or anything nearly similar.
This book is a rough ride but one that I didn’t want to get off of. I cannot wait until book two. I love you K.V. Rose
I’m just going to start this off by saying, K.V. Rose is the freaking queen of dark romance. She can honest to God write ANYTHING and make me love it.
Unorthodox is definitely not for the faint of heart, but of course, I’m a soul-less ginger so I loved it! Lol.
This story is a captive story involving crime lord Max, and innocent, unfortunate Addison.
I think KV is the only person who could create a character like Max and make me fall in love with him. (Sorry not sorry!). And don’t get me start on Addison. I absolutely loved her stubborn strength (even if it did get her in trouble!)
K.V. Rose, thank you for writing such a dark story in such a beautiful way. I am obsessed with you and your writing, and cannot wait for book 2!!

My first book by the author and it won’t be my last! This was a baptism by gunfire into the darkness this story delivers! Too bad I have to keep my language clean here…but this story is D.A.R.K. It is not for everyone, but for me it was a read in one sitting, do not interrupt me or I will cut you kind of read.
Addison’s father stole from the wrong man. Now he’ll pay the ultimate price with his daughter’s life. Max is not a man you cross. In his world, betrayal equals death.
Addison will be used to settle a debt and serve a purpose that is dear to Max. Max has no plans to keep her, because an iterested buyer wants her. He’ll just hold onto her until the exhange can be made and he can get what he’s really after.
This story is twisted. It is betrayal and lies, death and collateral damage, hate and desire. It’s a girl with an abusive past doing whatever she can to survive without letting him break her. It’s a man whose heart has become so black, he didn’t think there was anything left.
Two lost souls drawn to one another. They will push your boundaries (if you have any). Their connection is not sweet, it’s drowned in pain and violence. Max and Addison are each a force. She is a fighter and a survivor. He is a warrior and her protector.
Perceived bettayal will cause a break and then their pasts will tear them apart. I was left reeling when I turned the last page. Now to wait for more is slow torture. I know it will be worth it.
The author consumed me with Max’s dark world. These characters are complex and their pain and struggles bleed through the pages. I enjoyed the roller coaster of emotions she evoked even when she took us to the darkest of places. I’ll have to binge the author’s back catalog while I wait for book two.
K. V. Rose – Unorthodox (Sick Love Duet #1)
.
She thinks I’m a monster. I wonder if she knows, though, that that’s exactly what I’ve always wanted to be.
Unorthodox is a dark and twisted story of survival between two characters who are broken and messed up beyond imagination. I enjoy dark romance but this was just dark. Full stop. I love a good daddy and age gap romance but daddy Max only made one appearance, and any mention of her youth was related to abuse. The plot was the perfect amount of sick and twisted deprivety. But where was the romance? No loving or caring actions. Their interactions were strategic and manipulative. Like two players in a game. However, they shared similarities and painful pasts, connecting their soulless hearts together in a world of cruel monsters.
I wasn’t made for Max Bennett. No one is made for Max.
This is my first K. V. Rose book so I’m unfamiliar with her style of writing. The book didnt end in a traditional sense. Im left grieving and theres no happy ending in sight. I feel incomplete. Were we left at a cliffhanger; or is this the end. As this is a duet, I hope Max and Addisons story continues.
Such a beautiful fucking whore.
This book is not for the faint of heart! If you enjoy unique plots and twisted characters, you will love this. Unorthodox is not similar to any book I’ve come across. Dark romance lovers will eat this up.
Triggered content: human trafficking, rape, statutory rape, abuse, kidnap, torture, murder.
No HEA.

Holy shit! (please excuse my language) this was an interesting read and I’d never thought I’d read and love so much!
This is not your typical light romance or smut pantie dropping hotness, well Daddy Max sure can make you feel hot and bothered I took my sweet time reading this, each chapter I held my breath like I couldn’t believe the darkness both Max and Addison have face and gone through. Alot of people would think what romance are you talking about in this kind of genre? Read to find out, the story speaks itself.
The relationship between Max and Addison is very complex that it gets you wondering how they really feel about each other yet their chemistry is very high off end like addicted to another! Max who’s a ruthless Satan who doesn’t care what he does to people, he gets what he wants and he’ll do anything to get it. You can’t help love and maybe hate him but more love than not! Addison is a brave girl who gone through so much shit, abused mentally and physically, Max is trying to teach in a way through survival when sold to a new owner.
It turns out both aren’t so different from each other. Born beyond their control into a cruel world. Emotionally and physically abused by people you wouldn’t believe they had to go through. Words can’t describe how emotionally deep this was for me and I loved it! I was warned beforehand that this was very dark stuff but I’m glad I got to read this…get a glimpse of this genre alone! The writing style was written really well : +
Thank you K.V Rose
and BooksnMoods for giving me this opportunity to read this digital arc for an honest review!
HEED THE WARNING – THIS BOOK CONTAINS TRIGGERS AND MAY NOT BE APPROPRIATE FOR EVERYONE.
WITH THAT BEING SAID, DADDY MAX IS EVERYTHING!
“I don’t want your body, stupid girl. Everyone will have that. Pay attention, Addison. It’s your mind I want to fuck.”
THIS. RIGHT. HERE. This quote has got to be my favorite in the book and describes it PERFECTLY.
This dark MF romance is everything you didn’t know you needed. Max has a dark past that has shaped him into who he is: brutal, raw, unhinged, the fucking devil himself. Addison is the business opportunity he has been waiting for and he just can’t refuse the offer that has been made.
Addison has also been through her own shit, and she feels betrayed by the way her body responds to situations she has to endure but her mind cannot stop it. Max isn’t the only monster she’s let into her bed, and that’s exactly what he’s always wanted to be – a monster.
Yup, unpopular opinion or not, I’m not jumping on this bandwagon and saying how great ‘Unorthodox’ was because it wasn’t. Whatsoever.
Don’t get me wrong, I love dark gritty romances that may not always be suited for everyone and the author wasn’t lying about the triggering topics featured in this novel: child trafficking, rape, kidnapping, abuse, murder, torture and more.
All in all, it was a bit too much even for me (who would have thought!) and I just couldn’t bypass those moments to look at the ‘romantic’ portion of this dark romance which became less appealing after everything was said and done with our lead heroine, Addison. Plus some of the scenes left a bad taste in my mouth and those particular triggering topics made me feel too uncomfortable to continue this read so this became a big nope for me before I even reached the halfway point.
Nevertheless I gave this author a whirl and for the obvious reasons, her works (not just including this one) just aren’t for me.
***4,5 “He’s still in there!!!” stars***
“Who seeks solace with their demons?
Who craves a gentle touch from the same hands that hurt them?”
“Sick love” indeed, even though i can’t really say that i saw any form of love in here!!!
Gawd, this book was sooo dark and twisted and I really loved it in a weird sense!!!
Max and Addison got under my skin and i’m waiting impatiently for the next part of their story, especially after the events at the end of this book!!!!
OMG!!!! This was my first book by K.V. Rose, but her writing captivated me and i’m craving for more!!!
“You do understand though, Max, it’s highly… unorthodox to put your hands on things that don’t belong to you?”
Well, honestly, i don’t really know what to say about this book…
This story was soooo fucked up. So. Much. And i was always stressed over what will happen to poor Addison…
That girl had gone through too many shits in her eighteen years and Max Bennett has in store so many ugly things for her… My heart was aching for her and what she would have to endure next…
I was praying for a miracle, that i wasn’t seeing coming soon!!!
“Someone will come for me. But if they don’t?
“I’d rather live the nightmare than be helpless against it. Living is surviving.”
Max didn’t earn my sympathy and trust until around 70% of the book…
Honestly, i couldn’t understand him… He was so cold and detached, so cruel toward Addison and yes, at some point I understood some of the reasons why he was like that, but still… He did too many bad things…
Yep, sometimes Addison was slipping under his thick icy walls, but he wasn’t letting himself feeling and honestly, my heart was breaking for him… For many reasons that i can not really tell you…
“No matter how much I admire her stupid displays of bravery, she’s a pawn. I don’t want to keep her. She’s payment for something I need, and the only thing I could give a fuck about is getting what I made a deal for.”
This was a dark and twisted story, full of intense moments that would steal a part of your soul…
Both our heroes are too troubled and they had to face too many horrors against them in their lives…
Even though they don’t know it, that sick part of them is connecting with the other’s and when they are together, everything around them is fading away…
But will this sick love can grow into something more, something good???
And what they will have to do in order to find a slice of heaven in the hell that they are living???
“If this isn’t love, if this isn’t something like it, then what is it, Max?”
“Two broken souls, both fucked from the beginning. For a moment there, I thought that could make us something. That could make us a force. Together.”
Well, I loved this couple very much, even though i couldn’t fully understand them!!!
I loved Addison and her strength and defiance… I loved the way that she was trying to hold on to hope…
I liked Max, even though i wanted to kill him many times, and i can really love him if he will stop being so stubborn and full of mistrust. I can understand where he is coming from, but he was many times unreasonable to Addison and i really didn’t like it.
But i can not deny that there was something like affection between them and the chemistry was off the charts.
“The way he’s lighting my body on fire when I should feel nothing but coldness, and the way his words slipping past my defenses… I realize with no small amount of horror that I want him.”
“Numbness. Nothing. That’s all I’ve really been and I hate that I can’t stay there. That when she’s around, when her bravery and her goodness come through… I. Want. More.”
The crimes in here were too many and disturbing in a way, so if you are sensitive to certain matters, i would advice you to stay away from this book!
But if you love dark and twisted stories, be my guest and dive in it. You’re gonna love it and you would be craving for more!!!! As i do!!
“Someday, everyone has to learn there are monsters in the world.”
*I received an ARC for the exchange of an honest review. Thank you.*
4 – 4.5 Stars!
Having picked up Ms.Rose’s work for the first time back in April of this year I couldn’t wait to read more of her books! When I found out about this duet I knew that I wanted to read this first book next! This dark story grabbed my attention from the prologue and from that point on, I was hooked!
Addison and Max’s journey is a dark one. I wasn’t sure what all was going to happen and I was on the edge of my seat throughout. I went through so many different emotions while reading and I so enjoyed how I felt so much.
I stayed up all night until the sun was shining bright because I had to finish reading their story in one sitting. I couldn’t put my kindle down! I need book two in my life so badly!
With Unorthodox, Ms.Rose brings the darkness that will consume your thoughts and keep you glued to your kindle! I’m still thinking about this book. I can’t wait for the next one!
*I volunteered to read and review a copy of this book from Books and Moods PR / the author*
Unorthodox is my first but hopefully not my last read by this author as this was a brilliant read.
If you like dark reads then you will love Max. His heart and soul is pitched black. I kept hoping to see his soft side! Addison is a very likeable character. Neither of these have had a happy childhood so they don’t expect much from anyone. She’s strong and feisty and can stand up to Max.
The storyline is brilliant. It’s fast paced with plenty of twists and turns. I absolutely loved it and can’t wait to read part two. Hopefully we won’t need to wait too long.
Seriously, I don’t think KV will ever stop slaying me! Unorthodox was damn dark and fucking STEAMY it was everything I needed! There are a rare few who push the limits on dark romance for me, and it is INSANELY hard to find those authors, and I thank the heavens for falling into KV’s world because she is one of those rare few! She’s not afraid to get dark, bloody, damaged or taboo. She will push all the limits and break all the boundaries to give you the dark and depraved we all deserve and yearn for. Max was so damn dark and I relished every minute of that sweet torture. Oh man and that epilogue … wooh, I knew shit was about. to. go. down. Cannot wait for book 2!!
Good Gods! Unorthodox is truly out of the ordinary!
I’m a dark romance fan and I love abusive romances. After finishing Unorthodox I feel like I’ve hit a jackpot with this author.
The plot, the characters, the ruthlessness!
Max and Addison, our main characters, couldn’t be in more different roles. She’s his to play, she’s his prey. And he… he takes the game to a completely new lever. He’s a master at mind games. Mean to the bones. And he’s using her for something far bigger and far more important to him.
But they both have one thing in common – the tortured past, the life they were forced to live in, the schemes, the violence, the abuse! You’d think it would numb them, but they still feel. And therein lies the beauty of Unorthodox.
Dark. Haunting. Impressive!
No freaking words, I’ve got nothing here! That was seriously one h*** of a ride. I am straight up obsessed with this book. Nobody writes like K, nobody! It’s so deliciously, achingly, deviously, dark and has embedded itself straight into my very bones. My body, my soul is just on a high that I can’t quite explain.
Max f****** Bennett is no joke, he’s the very devil in disguise. He is not sweet, he’s not here to whisper sweet nothings into your ear. He’s a very bad man, who does alot of very bad things. He does have a heart though, it’s in there, you just have to dig all the way to very bottom and then dig just a little more and you’ll find it. Oh, but I’ll take him, he can do all the dirty, painful, twisted things to me any freaking day. And I won’t apologize for that, ever.
Addison has been through some s***, like some really bad s*** that there’s no coming back from. What’s going from one bad situation to another when you been through it all? I mean at least shes got a hot asf guy as her captor now, right?! I mean it might look all kinds of bad but in some very f***** up way Max is a distraction she needs.
Be prepared because this is no fairytale. No happy ending here, I mean maybe a very twisted one to come in the second book in this duet? Maybe? I don’t know but I’m here for it and I need it like I need my next breathe!
