This is a very enjoyable short read that is a quick read. Very well written with great dialogue between characters. I liked the humor and drama. I am looking forward to reading whatever new Layla Stone come out with following this finished series.

A very well written likable book 6 in the Marnak Series is a good story with characters that depth and you feel you know them. This story is humorous, but it does have drama. The characters in this world are great and I cannot wait to read more about this world and it’s people. This book was unique and I enjoyed it a lot. A Must read new Series.

The writing and editing of this novella was super clean, with few if any typos that I caught in the ARC version of the manuscript. The world building was competent, especially considering how short this novella was. The characterization was deft and adroit, again, especially considering how short this story was. The development of the romantic relationship was super quick. I would consider that the one big weakness of this story, but I don’t know if the author even could have done it any better with how short the word count was. The plot and pacing was interesting and exciting, with me turning pages to find out what was going to happen next so fast the pages were smoking! There was relatively little angst in this novel considering the hero’s past and his past relationship with the heroine, but I felt that was appropriate considering how short this story was. There were very high stakes, which I prefer in my romance novels. This novel used the Enemies to Lovers trope. The world building, plot and pacing were all four or five stars. The characterization was four stars, and the development of the romantic relationship was three stars. The combined score for this novella was therefore four stars. This novel has a Happy For Now ending instead of a cliffhanger, so that is a big plus of this story. I recommend this story to fans of sci-fi romance who have busy lives and only have time for a story with a short page count. It was a delicious little morsel. I do not plan to buy myself a keeper copy of this novella, but I still thoroughly enjoyed it.

Chivva is a Terran employed as a nuclear engineer/electrician. As she was heading out, her boss called that he had as new contract and would call her back. So she decided to get some breakfast. She saw her demon landlord, Naff, in the hallway and told him her roommate had moved out and she nervously agreed to let him sublet the extra room. Her boss called back with the new job – a dangerous and sort of illegal one that she didn’t want but hung up on her before she could refuse it. Naff had overheard and called her back to insist that a neighbor Kadin, a man she hated, go with her and told her to dress in the ugliest outfit she owned, something moldy or that smelled like death. Where she would be working, he was afraid the men would literally attack and rape her.
Naff offered half rent on his apartment if Kadin would protect Chivva. He instead wanted 2 months rent-free. So Naff moved him into Chivva’s extra room! Both of them seemed a bit unhappy at that. She had always set her alarm an hour early just to avoid running into him! In anger, she stormed off without him. And he renegotiated for a ONE-room apartment for both of them to share!
Watching her evaluate the problem, he heard her growl about lazy engineers who didn’t take the time to do this right. She was so sweet, why wasn’t she a demon’s pet by now? And then realized that was true – who was protecting her? Chivva found the problem. The idiot who ran the line had messed up, and a transformer needed to be fixed, so it wasn’t as catastrophic as it could have been if they had waited to call her in. They took a break, and Kadin apologized for the way he had treated her for 2 years. Then he kissed her like she had never been kissed before. Having him apologize for hurting her feelings, and knowing he would be moving in with her sounded like a wonderful dream – and she knew there was no way she could trust this!
This was so good! I melted when Kadin told Chivva that when he saw her for the first time, she smiled at him with her whole heart and he knew she was all he had ever wanted. Would she give him a chance? Would she realize how he had always felt about her? Or would she end it and move away? Grab your copy and enjoy this well-written book with memorable and likable characters you won’t forget.
I hate to see the Marnak series end!
Chivva is a nuclear engineer but spends most of her time fixing power plants. Her boss sends her out on a call, but her landlord, Naff (NAFF!!), won’t let her leave until she changes into something dirty and awful. Her neighbor concurs, and Naff tells Kadin to go with her. Seems that the problem is in a bordello, and Naff and Kadin think she will be attacked as soon as she walks in.
Chivva is more than either Naff or Kadin realize, but it’s a good thing Kadin goes with her. It takes hours for the job, and Things Happen along the way. It’s a fun, exciting ending to the series, and I look forward to whatever replaces Marnak!
So we start with Chivva a Terran(Human) that is a nuclear electrician. Her roommate moved out last month she let’s the landlord know and decides he can find her a new roommate. Landlord overhears where her next job is at and asks neighbor to go with her for protection. The neighbor is Kadin he is a Bolark/Yunkin hybrid and has been mean to her since she moved in 2 years ago. Really liked this short story with HEA.
