Unlocking The Deputy’s Heart is a story with so many twists and turns in it you will be amazed at the final outcome. When a report is made there is a ruckus out at the Henderson’s ranch, Sheriff Monroe, Deputy Joseph and Mayor Casey ride out to see what is going on. Deputy Joseph goes inside the house and finds Henderson dead, his daughter Annie is missing and he hears shooting outside where he finds the mayor dead and the sheriff shot in the arm and said that the ones responsible is the 3 men that rode off. Over the next few days they try to locate the bandits with no luck. Isabella, The oldest daughter of the mayor returns home from New York where she was in school to find out all the horrible news. She immediately takes over the position of the mayor and demands the bandits be caught. Then several wagons come into town telling of bandits holding them up. The posse goes out and the bandits were located and Joseph is hailed a hero. So much is found out in the couple of weeks prior to the court date that the entire community is left in shock, and their little town changes and so do the lives of three couples that find love along the way. The new mayor decides the name of the town needs to change from Little Hope to New Hope, a fitting name for a progressive town.
Unlocking the Deputy’s Heart is a play on Joseph in the Bible. It was entertaining. I admired Joseph that he had overcome being sold by his brothers after his parents’ deaths and made a life for himself as a deputy sheriff but I felt he could have had stronger character. Isabelle was an interesting female protagonist who assumed the position of mayor was hers when her mayor father was murdered. This was an unusual historical romance. I received a complimentary e-book from the author. This is my honest opinion.
There is lots of action, anger, mystery, people wanting to just hang who they thought were the bad guys, discovery of family. Some swearing near the end & typo errors. An ending I didn’t expect & didn’t think was right. To understand what I mean you will need to read the book. This one was not as good as others of Ms. Carley I’ve read.
Unlocking the Deputy’s Heart by Chloe Carley is a gentle little romance involving Jospeh Stewart, Deputy Sheriff in Little Hope, and the mayor’s daughter, Isabelle Taylor, who start the book in New York City, where she is supposed to be attending finishing school, but she got kicked out. Then, without telling her father, she started attending teacher training, but she got kicked out. Why? She is a suffragette and she keeps being returned to the various school by the police, for being involved in demonstrations, so she decides it is time to go home to Little Hope, only to discover that her father had been killed trying to apprehend a small band of thieves.
This is not one of Carley’s best books. The story, although it had its high points, was pretty thin and the characters were flat, not well-rounded at all. Sadly the secondary characters were the same. They all had potential, but it was failed potential. Attempts to provide motive were just that, attempts. The young woman around whom the crimes were based was not deserving of either of the men’s affections that were pursuing her, or at least Carley did not make the character engaging enough. I am a big fan of Chloe Carley and I was disappointed. Read at your own peril.
