What a cracking read this was. A mixture of genres, horror, sci-Fi, vampires, all wrapped in a page-turning read.
There are many POVs spanning across different eras that are linked throughout the ages.
The writer, effortless writing by the way, definitely knows how to spin a captivating and intriguing yarn.
A thriller well worth reading, take my word on that.
Unknown: by Phil Price
“Unknown” is a clever mix of modern day crime and yesteryear myths and legends, where Vampires, monsters, crones and other beasties cross from one world to another in order to hunt.
The story begins with a murder in one world and then in another and another and the reader realises that these mini stories and different worlds are somehow interrelated. As the story builds, it´s down to ex policeman, now PI, Jake, to put an end to these murders and hold back the evil that threatens to destroy his own world and others.
The author´s attention to detail in regards to describing the different worlds Jake visits were spot on. So much so, that I felt like I could step through the Doorway and probably find my way around there…(and I have NO sense of direction whatsoever!)
The characters, both good and evil were beautifully portrayed. The more I read, the more they grew on me.
The storyline is unique and in some ways thought provoking- What if these hidden doorways really do exist and all the ghosts, ghouls, vampires, monsters and other creatures we were told were myths really do exist?
*Small spoiler ahead:
A highlight for me was when Jake took his motorbike through the hidden Doorway to a more primitive existence to combat the vampires. It reminded me of Darrell from “The Walking Dead”. Fabulous!
I Highly Recommend it.
The punctuation is distracting. However, the story is different. Makes you wonder if such worlds really can exist???
I really enjoyed the narration by Hannibal Hills. He faded so much into the background that all I registered were the various voices of the characters. Though I’m convinced that the Brummies sound more Sheffield than Brum, but that could just be me. For a first listen to a narrator I settled very quickly.
Overall I enjoyed the story but got a bit confused during the first few chapters where it jumped between times as I felt it was not always clear which timezone we were in and who we were with. I know the stories were running along different lines but it took a while for me to connect them. This seemed to fade more as the book went on. I really liked the actual story and the way the world was set up and the species within it. I am looking forward to seeing how it carries on in the next book…
Exciting and Imaginative
There are so many people and places in the beginning it is almost overwhelming. However once everything is in place the story locks in to continuing suspense and action. Human and non-human characters have depth and are quite realistic. Although the book ends with a teaser for what is coming, the first story is complete. The style of writing is very straightforward and does a great job of describing without slowing progress of the story. This is not the kind of book you can put down.
I really enjoyed Unknown. It’s a unique story with good world building and layered characters.
So so
I found this book to be so poorly written, so full of grammatical
errors, so many changes in tense even within a sentence, as to be unreadable. I
If the story line had been a good one, perhaps I might’ve finished the book in spite of this. However, the story line was not great either, and I deleted it from my Kindle, unfinished.
I’m giving this book two stars for effort. I’m sure it could have been a great story, if only the author had not skimped on the editing. The painfully glaring grammatical, mechanical, and usage errors are the only thing that kept me from really enjoying this novel. If Phil Price happens to read the reviews: please, sir, next time take it to an editor. It will save you the embarrassment of reviews like this.
I did not like it
I loved that the story was set in Iceland … makes me want to visit! Found the “folklore” very compelling, and the ties to Tolkien’s “Lord of the Rings” was delightful!
Disjointed at times, bad spelling, punctuation, and grammar.
Fantasy Horror. Vampire doors to other places and other worlds. I really liked the story line unfortunately the grammar was lacking. If not for the grammatical errors I would have gave this five stars.
Love this book. A real page turner. Can’t wait to read next book
Tried to read it twice. Starts out exciting then quickly becomes boring and confusing
was hard to follow and I could not gain any empathy for the characters
I read this book because the reviews said it was scary. I didn’t find it to be scary at all. However I did like the concept of different spaces in time.
Additionally there were numerous grammar, spelling and punctuation errors that detracted from the story.
This book did not draw me in.
The storyline is very twisted and at times hard to follow. However the ending brings everything to a good conclusion.
Scary
