Reviewers say:“I enjoyed the read and was intrigued from the beginning to the end.”“It has been a while since I last enjoyed a book so thoroughly. I wanted to yell with triumph, cry with happiness, and laugh aloud with the characters here. I can’t recommend this book enough.”“When is the next colony ship leaving for this place? I’m there. lol!”“The novel is gripping and was hard for me to put … and was hard for me to put down (and I have read it twice). This is classified as a “coming of age” novel for young adults. Don’t let that put you off. In my 60’s, I was thoroughly satisfied with the book.”

I was given the opportunity to read and review this book freely. For the most part the story was okay, great even at some parts. I liked the world and conflict between the races, I liked the differences between humans and Maruts and the Marut culture. And I certainly loved the adventure and world setting. But, as in every book there is always something’s that could be better and sadly, every story has its dips and downfalls.
The big downfall in this book was the romance. Sure, the story evolved around the relationship between Kara and Rishi and I loved their romance. I loved the struggle between them and the growing love. However, I never really felt 100 % invested in their love story. In the beginning it felt very forced and the only indication that they had feelings for each other was because the author wrote so. I could not see or feel much love between them when I read the story however. It was very rushed from hating her kind, to friendly teasing of her ignorance of Marut culture, till full out blooming love. If the author had taken more time to develop their relationship and personalities a bit throughout the book instead of rushing everything in the beginning, it would have made me more invested and it would have made the relationship a more realistic one that developed throughout the storyline. Instead it was forcefully written in in the beginning. Don’t get me wrong though, as soon as the adventure starts with Rishi and Kara alone it gets a lot better and the relationship starts to flow more naturally when the romance is not the sole focus, but rather to survive and find their way back.
Despite the romance being rushed, I actually liked the most parts of the story and even the romance gets better. The idea of forbidden love between two -maybe not enemies, but rather between two conflicting races – made for a great story and an intriguing read. The idea in itself may not be unique, but the writing and the different directions the book takes made it very original and memorable. I can recognize a good author with the way she writes. She expertly built an entire new world in this book, with complex descriptions and different cultures without making it slow paced or boring. I could really tell how passionate she was working on this book and it gave good results as well, both looking at the deep storyline in the book and at the other reviews on Goodreads and Amazon. The only thing she might need to work on is the pace in the beginning and the end. Just as the romance felt rushed in the beginning, the ending was rushed as well. It felt like an abrupt ending going from war to peace in one page. I wish she would have eased in to the ending mor smoothly than she did, risked making it a slower pace in the end and given the reader a more informative conclusion. Other than that, I’m quite happy with how it turned out.
I don’t usually read sci-fi or watch sci-fi movies. Not because I have anything against the genre, but mostly because I prefer fantasy and romance. Despite the fact that I found this storyline very similar to Avatar, I actually liked the sci-fi part. It harbored close to fantasy with a different humanoid species and animals such as kallin bears and satyrs. Though I’m not completely satisfied with the romance in the story, it too made the story likable and a fun and exciting read. Definitely worth three stars
