I love this story. It definitely kept me up all night reading. The characters are well developed, the story flows. I love JB Schroeder. There are no moments where you push through or skim. Everything leads up to an amazing climax. … Then you pick up the next book in the series.
You gotta love when the title of the book is an accurate depiction of the story cause someone was seriously unhinged in this book.
I loved this author’s debut book and was looking forward to seeing what was next. This book kicks off a new series but has some loose ties with the other series via the characters.
Interesting thing – the leads weren’t written in the typical damsel in distress saved by a big alpha man. Aiden Miller is a very rich and successful businessman but he also suffers from anxieties from a situation that lasted many years in his past. (I’m choosing not to go into detail about what that is so the reader can be surprised.) On the recommendation of his Dr he was sent to oversee one of his family’s smaller grocery stores to help in alleviating some of his stress. Yeah that didnt work out to well as right away he finds himself attracted to very confident and brash woman, realizing the store is losing money and its turn over rate on employees is high and it gets even worse when the police inform him drugs are being sold out of his store and they want to set up a sting.
Tori Radnor is starting over in life with her teenage son. All she wants to do is to help the unemployed homeless get reestablished back into the work force. Tori came from money and even married money but after a disastrous marriage and losing everything and her snooty parents being ashamed of her homeless state she decides she is going to help others and that means starting from the bottom and working her way up on her own. She refuses to ever rely on another person again after being let down by both her parents and ex-husband. She too is instantly attracted to Aiden but after her past resists it as long as can.
We get the baddie’s POV through out and its obvious from their thought process they are unhinged. The author did a good job of not letting the reader know who it was and even once we did there was still a huge shocking revelation you didn’t see coming.. Those are always my favorites in suspense books…
Not as dark and intense in subject matter as Runaway but the story still engages your attention from beginning to end (and what an ending it was)..
When I was approached by the author to read this book, I jumped on it. I’m always looking for new romantic suspense authors because it’s my absolute favorite little genre. Anyway … you never really know what you’re going to get when you read a new (to you) author and this one most definitely did not disappoint.
Right off the bat, there were exciting things happening within the pages of this one. I immediately loved Tori and her son and that fact alone built up a lot of momentum getting into the book. When you love characters that an author has created, you just want to keep reading! Speaking of characters … I did have a bit of a back and forth thing going with the antagonist of the story. Here’s the deal … the first (approx) half of the book, you don’t know ANYTHING about the antagonist. You don’t know if they are male or female, you don’t know how old they are or what their name is … like I said, NOTHING. Now that’s not a bad thing, but it does make it a little difficult to form that character in your head when you’re reading. That being said, if I had the power to change this, would I? Absolutely not. The mystery surrounding the bad dude/dudette really ratchets up the suspense and I found myself loving every second of the mysterious psycho plaguing these pages. But it did throw me off a bit, and it was worth mentioning.
I think that the way that this story came together quickly shot the book up to the top of my favorites list. There are quite a few things going on but the fast paced way in which it was written doesn’t leave you feeling weighed down with all of the details that you’ll find yourself quickly consuming. There were a couple of things that the characters talked about needing/wanting to do and then you don’t really know if that happened or not but it doesn’t detract from the story too much.
All in all, I adored this book and I’m excited to see what the next book in the series has to offer because this one was buttoned up pretty tightly! I can’t believe how lucky I was to get asked to read this one. Great author, great book and now I’m a lifelong fan.
