Guilt.Pain.Emptiness.My life changed one year ago.I don’t have the strength to pull myself from the darkness.Until him.He wasn’t supposed to mean anything to me.He wasn’t supposed to happen. But it did.And he is everything. I’m scared and vulnerable. He wants to pick up my broken pieces. But I don’t know how.Without letting him into my heart.
Everything about this book was new to me, but I loved it! M/M was not something I thought I would like. Landon’s inner struggle was hard, but so real! I know I ‘say’ it all the time but I love stand alone series, that way we can keep up with everyone from the previous books! Aubrey, Kenni, and Carm, and the boys, wow. Heather did an amazing job with this book. The emotions it brought out. I strongly suggest you read this whole series!
I had mixed feelings about this book, prior to reading it, because the author was clear and upfront that it is a M/M romance story. It’s not something that I’ve read much of in the past, but I decided to read it because the other books in the series were positively amazing. Right from the beginning, the feelings in this book smack you in the face. The grief and guilt Landon feels about his father are so overwhelming, that I felt sorrow for him and found myself wanting to fix it for him. There was also confusion, and hurt, and anger, as well as fear and all kinds of other feelings floating around this book. There were tense moments, moments of wonder, and times I couldn’t believe what had just happened. My emotions ran the gamut, which is the sign of an amazing story, to me.
Yes, this is the story of a same sex couple, and there is sex involved. However, that takes a backseat to the story of the love that the couple shares, and it becomes less about a same sex couple and becomes more about the story of just Landon and Chase. It was a beautiful story!
Landon’s father passed away a year ago and he still has trouble dealing with the loss. He goes to work each morning , feeling empty inside. He is thrilled for his sister who recently got married and is expecting a baby. He just wants to be happy, too. Chase is a firefighter, who is always smiling and has a sexy, raspy voice. He lost his mom 16 years, and he misses her every day.
After a hard day at work, Landon needed to relax and unwind, so he went to the bar down the street from his house. It was really busy when he got there, so the guy next to him pounded on the bar until the bartender took their order. They exchanged names and his new friend ,Chase, attempted to talk to him. Landon thanked him for the beer, but told him he just wanted to be alone. Chase had spotted Landon the moment he walked into the bar. From his tousled hair, to his tight Levi’s and bright blue eyes. Wow, he was beautiful, Chase thought. Landon finally relaxed , bought Chase a beer, and found out the house he was renting needed some work. Landon, who owns a construction company, agreed to help him.
Landon and Chase began working on the house. Landon found himself admiring everything about Chase and he was confused as to why he found him so attractive. He felt a connection to him that he didn’t understand. He had always dated women before. One day at the house, Landon found Chase staring at him and he couldn’t control his feelings anymore. He reached for Chase, pulling him towards him and crushed his lips into his. The heat of the kiss was intoxicating and they couldn’t get enough of each other. Chase was in heaven. He was so happy that Landon had feelings for him. He had known right away that Landon was the one for him. Was is too much to hope that they could have a future together?
Will Landon run from the feelings he has for Chase because he is afraid to be with him? Can Chase reassure Landon that their love was meant to be?
“Unexpected Flames” is the final book in the Hearts on Fire Series, which I highly recommend. I fell in love with this book right away! Heather describes her characters so precisely, that you can feel the connection between them in your heart. Landon and Chase’s journey is passionate and full of hope for the future. I cried, I laughed and I didn’t want the story to end. I am looking forward to Heather’s next book, “Stay With Me”, the first book in her new Taphouse Blues Series.
