Unearthed is book one in the Death Seeker series by Cecy Robson.
I feel in love with Cecy Robson’s Weird Girls series and deiced to give her new Urban Fantasy/Paranormal Romance a try. I enjoyed the book, but I had trouble staying interested. Not sure if it’s just first book syndrome, but I’d read a few chapters, then put the book down for a few days, then pick it back up. Their where some areas that captured me and others no so much. I wasn’t as engrossed in this novel as I have been with her previous work.
In Unearthed we are introduced to a verity of characters. Their are several different kinds of Fae and concepts of Death. I like the verity, but at times it got to be a bit overwhelming; especially with Death. It sounded like some aspects of Death are good and some are bad, yet by the end the author made it sound like all the different kinds of Death where/are out to kill Olivia; expect Ryker who will protect her.
We meet our heroine, Olivia, right off the bat. She’s a Pixie with no wings and no magic, or so she thinks. She’s lovable, slightly clumsy, and has this spark, but she has this habit of fainting/blacking out when things got rough. This happened a few times in the story during the height of a battle scene and then we are moving onto the next day or a few hours later. I didn’t care for the fade to black moments.
Ryker our hero, is The Grime Reaper, Ankou, aka King of the Dead. He’s sexy and has this bad boy vibe going. He helps Olivia train and becomes her protecter. In return he want’s her to end his life. He’s been the Ankou far longer then was meant to be and the long life has taken it’s toll on him.
The background was interesting and I liked the premise, but I really needed some elaboration on what actually happened in Fae to make all the Fairy’s leave and come to earth to hid among the humans.
We are also treated to a few surprises along the way and the action scenes are fast paced. We also get some tender moments, but I wouldn’t call this novel a romance. At least not yet, but their is the possibility.
Unearthed is well written, with moments of very realistic humor, but overall, it was just ok. If you enjoy stories about Fae and magic then this series might be up your alley.

The Fae escaped Death by fleeing to Earth’s realm unfortunately Death wasn’t far behind… Pixie Olivia Finn clings to talisman that keeps her veiled from Death and she believes that she is safe…until Death finds her and discovers that she’s immune to its grip. Now the Fae believe she is their savior and dark entities are compelled to destroy her, she can no longer hide from Death. To survive, she must seek it but can she trust the King of the Dead who has sworn to train and protect her.
This new series is utterly fascinating with lots an intriguing fae culture, surprising elements and Death in its many forms. The characters are strong, bold and some are a little on the quirky side, adding a bit of spice, flair and fun to the story. There is some seriously electrical chemistry between Olivia and Ryker, but this budding romance has several obstacles, which keeps the relationship in suspense throughout and also adds to the emotional turmoil of the story which in this case, there are lots which isn’t surprising when the characters are being stalked by death entities.
The story is steady to fast paced with lots of thrills and excitement around a complicated way of life as the fae try to stay hidden from Death, but with surprising twists and several deadly battles, Olivia, Ryker and her friends can’t be sure who trust either… readers either as the final battle of this part of the story stuns the characters and the readers. This story certainly catches readers’ interest but some of it may leave readers with some questions, like why is Olivia a pixie who suddenly has all these awesome powers, but of course, this is an urban fantasy, so obviously Olivia’s story is not over and readers will learn more as she does.

Book source ~ Tour. My review is voluntary and honest.
Olivia Finn is not human. She’s one of the Fae, a pixie living in Earth’s realm ever since Death destroyed her world. She works for a law firm where several other Fae work. They wear talismans to hide from humans and Death. But then Death comes to the firm and everything changes. Word gets out that she’s immune to Death and it’s up to her friends and the King of the Dead to keep her alive long enough to destroy the Fae’s worst enemy, Cathasach and the Cù-Sìth. Olivia is just a paralegal and a pixie, not the savior of her people. How is she going to survive the coming war?
If you like a compelling life or death story sprinkled with humor and hope that is a mix of ordinary human life entwined with the Fae in an extraordinary situation then this is the one for you. A fantastic world and great characters make this one of my top reads of 2019. I fell into the story and didn’t want to return to mundane life when I was done. Livvie is a strong, sassy, and funny character who carries the narrative well. Her sidekicks are interesting in their own right though I hope they get beefed up a bit in future editions. This is a world I could easily dive into again and again. Most excellent!
A Pixie, Olivia, and the (or one of the) Grim Reapers (Ryker) work to make life or the world a wee bit safer for those that choose to live in it or have come to it for safety from their own world’s troubles with Death. That in its self had me interested and then confused at the same time. I wanted to know more about Olivia, Ryker, Death, the Fae. I wanted to know why so many came to Earth in our realm of existence. I was excited to see more of what lead so much to have to so many.
Olivia was likeable until she wasn’t. The time losses were a bit daunting. The friends made were entertaining. The idea that Fae would willing come to Earth to live among the common human was page turning. I wanted answers and turned every page to get more. Although I did not feel the book ended with a cliffhanger, I did feel like there was more to the story and the migration of Fae. I look forward to seeing how things all unfold in the series of Death Seeker.
I’m a huge fan of all things paranormal, and I’ve been reading this author’s paranormal books for awhile. When the chance to read this one came, I jumped on it quickly. Olivia is an interesting character, and I loved the interaction with her boss at the law firm. She was just so take-charge. I was a little disappointed that didn’t translate into her personal life for the thing she’s destined to do. No spoilers! However, she is still a fun, interesting characters. In addition to her, I really enjoyed the side characters, and I am hopeful we’ll get to know them better in the next book/books. The universe was intriguing, but I wish we had learned a little more. Again, I’m hoping for that in the future books. All in all, I really enjoyed this fun beginning glimpse into Olivia’s world and I’m looking forward to more. Recommend! I was a provided a copy which I voluntarily reviewed.
I loved Olivia’s colorful outlook compared to Ryker’s. Olivia and Ryker together were perfect yin and yang. The story’s pace was steady and action packed. I would love to read Frankie’s story as well as Stevie’s. Jane is my favorite secondary character. I couldn’t wait to see her pop up in the story. While humorous at times it had its sad moments as well. Olivia’s training didn’t just automatically make her a perfect warrior and it was those imperfections that made her real. Overall a great read and I will be picking up the next one.
A new series from an author who has a huge following and yes it’s another urban fantasy one but this time we get the Fae and the Grim Reaper ! Perhaps you are not surprised as the artwork does somewhat give away that nugget of information but there certainly are numerous surprises in this book. For a start our protagonist is Olivia a Pixie turned paralegal and she’s really quite a skilful multitasker . Add in the fact that the Fae are now living on Earth hiding amongst humans and then there’s the really odd thing and that’s all the numerous forms of death that are out to devour the souls of the surviving Fae !
This has a lot to recommend it and I think when it comes to Olivia you will either love her or hate her as she’s kind of a bouncy wee thing but can also seem incredibly well if brutal shallow. Awful things happen here that are quickly glossed over leaving Olivia with an impressive mission to actually train to take out the Alpha of the Death Hounds Honestly I wasn’t terribly sure exactly how training could help her but with Death by her side ( yep he’s a big, apparently gorgeous hunk of manhood) Olivia actually does get a handle on what was previously a dormant power. Unfortunately this didn’t really make an awful lot of sense to me as I’m still unsure exactly why Olivia has the power she does but hey ho let’s just go with the flow because, magic !
I liked that Olivia has interesting friends and I really enjoyed the back story of Death aka Ryker. What I didn’t like was the fade to black moments ( very Prisoner of Azkaban ) when Olivia was in grave danger and then bam we’ve moved on and she’s safe and yes it gets explained but bum it was aggravating. I think that’s partly why I’m rating this a four because I was actually enjoying the set up and the action so I felt terribly cheated. This does get wrapped up so don’t fear that there’s a huge cliffhanger because there isn’t but it’s left in a way that the author can expand this world and perhaps give Death and Olivia a much happier ending.
This voluntary take is of a copy I requested from Netgalley and my thoughts and comments are honest and I believe fair
Well here was a fun story; unique and original. I loved that this story was about Death and a Fay and all that that implies. I loved the Hell Hounds and the unique take on Fay lore. I loved the main characters of Death and Olivia and I liked the world in which the author created.
The mix of real world and mythology was fun to read and I enjoyed the chances the author took in the story. There were a few too many secondary characters for me to keep track of so I focused only on the main ones. The characters are not detailed as much as I would have liked but I did enjoy the dialogue between Death (he as another name, but come on I love to call him Death) and Olivia. I think they balance each other well.
This is more of an action/adventure paranormal story rather than a romance (that might be saved for book two), but there are some really great moments between all the fast paced twists and turns. I think that this is a great book for those who like action, supernatural and more story line based reads rather than detail character driven stories. I hope there is some more romance in the next book (if there even is one). I received an ARC via NetGalley and am leaving an honest review.

It was a very enjoyable story for a first book in a series. I’m looking forward to read the next installment. Honestly, I never read anything like this before although I’m familiar with the Life and Death concept that the author used in the story. Overall it was just brilliant.
This is a story about Olivia, a pixie from the fae realm that lives on earth. Olivia and the rest of the fae has to live in the Earth realm while trying their best to hide who they really are in order for them to survive from their enemy, Cathasach and his hounds, the Cù-Sìth. One disastrous night triggers her dormant magic and the same night also she found out that Ryker—an attorney she work with—is actually Death, the Grim Reaper. Ryker made it his mission to train Olivia so she will be ready for Cathasach’s next attack.
I loved the concept of the story, the whole Life and Death thing is unique. It reminds me a lot of The Arcana Chronicles by Kresley Cole. Here, the Life and Death are Olivia and Ryker, whereas in The Arcana Chronicles, Life and Death are Evie and Aric. Both books are unique but I prefer the Life and Death concept in this book, I find it to be much better and very well-written, and also it has a clear explanation on some of the things regarding Life and Death. For example, why Olivia has strong connection with Ryker compared to Cathasach while Cathasach is also Death just like Ryker. And how many version of Death exists and why Ryker is so different than Cathasach in so many ways.
The whole explanation makes everything so clear and it also helps me understand the plot so easily. I can see that the Scottish folklore is the biggest inspiration for this story which makes the story more enjoyable and interesting. It’s hard for me to find books/book series that are based on or inspired by either the Irish/Scottish folklores, except for Juliet Marillier’s books. So I’m happy to see that this book has the elements that are based on the Scottish folklore. Also this story is a mix of real world and mythology which makes the setting of the story so unique.
I find that the world-building is brilliant and well-developed. Even though anything that happens in the book takes place on Earth and not in the supernatural realm, but the creatures from the fae realm still keep their traditions with them, and it make the story feel like it takes place in a supernatural realm. Also the whole magic parts that involved changing a whole scenery was truly so captivating, it seriously surprised me how the looks of a normal place can easily changed into a magical place.
The story was written very well and it does have a great flow, amazing pace, and unpredictable plot. It does have a good plot twist, but even with the twist, I can still predict what’s gonna happen. As for the betrayal in the story, I knew who betrayed Olivia and Ryker. It must be someone close to them, and their first meeting with those who they are close to clearly showed who will betray them later in the story, so it wasn’t surprising when the story revealed the traitor’s identity. Even though I managed to correctly predict some of the things in the story, the story still kept its great quality.
There was a great ton of actions in the story, and let me say this, it was very intense! The author did well in describing and writing the action parts, it was an incredible actions and I hope to see more of it in the next installment, but make it an upgrade version of this one. I want to see Ryker and Olivia fight their enemies with their full powers and doesn’t hold back at all, that would totally be badass. Ryker doesn’t hold anything back as far as I can see in this one, but I hope he uses his full Grim Reaper’s power and doesn’t get hurt or injured in the next book, I mean he is a Grim Reaper for a reason. As for Olivia, she has a long way to learn on how to reach her full potential.
This book featured some amazing characters, but the main ones are Olivia and Ryker. I liked the others too, especially Stevie, Frankie, and Jane, these three grew on me a lot. I’m still wary of Bill, I’m not sure if I can trust him yet. These characters are great, and they do have an amazing dynamic. Seeing them helping out Olivia, protecting her and so on warms my heart. It shows just how much they care for their own kind.
I truly appreciate how great the story is, and it was an enjoyable and fun read. I’m looking forward to see what’s next in store for Ryker and Olivia. If people wants to read a great book inspired by a Scottish folklore but with urban settings that have both light and dark tone for the story, then I suggest pick this one up. I’m sure a lot will be entertain by this great story and also by the characters, especially the main ones.
