Kricket Hollowell never wished upon stars. She was too busy hiding in plain sight, eluding Chicago’s foster care system. As her eighteenth birthday approaches, she now eagerly anticipates the day she’ll stop running and finally find her place in the world. That day comes when she meets a young Etharian soldier named Trey Allairis, who has been charged with coming to Earth to find Kricket and … and transport her to her true home. As danger draws close, he must protect her until she can wield the powers she cannot use on Earth… and he soon realizes that counting a galaxy of stars would be easier than losing this extraordinary girl.
Kyon knows the powerful depths of Kricket’s gifts — gifts he’ll control when he takes her for his tribe and leads the forces that will claim Ethar and destroy his enemies, starting with Trey Allairis. Now, Kricket faces the most difficult choice of her life: whether to wage a battle for survival or a fight for love.

I am a huge fan of the entire Kricket series by Amy A. Bartol. Oftentimes, I’ll read and love book one in a series only to have it fizzle out with subsequent volumes. With the Kricket series I LOVED each one! And the ending was a refreshing change from the usual sci fi, fantasy love saga. Highly recommend!
I have no idea why I left this on my Kindle for so long before reading it! Absolutely loved the world Amy created, and the complex storylines that kept the characters on their toes. Looking forward to the next in the Kricket series.
I couldn’t resist my obsessive reading of this series. It’s been about a year and I still think of the story line all the time.
This is a fun, sexy YA series that is 100% escapism – the main character is witty and fierce and the premise was instantly engaging. I’m looking forward to reading the rest of the series to pass the time while stuck at home!
My first taste of Amy Bartol storytelling did not disappoint!
Ms. Bartol is AMAZING and “Under Different Stars” is proof that we should all expect great things from Ms. Bartol in the future.
“Under Different Stars” is a sci-fi romance that grabs you from page one and doesn’t let go until the end. I was on the edge of my seat, mouth agape, pages turning the entire read. Ms. Bartol’s world-building is exquisite. She creates vivid pictures that transport you into this new world she’s created … and you never want to leave! All of this supports a solid story built around one young woman and the power that lies within her.
I can not wait to finish this series!
A starry read!
Wage a battle for survival…
Or a fight for love…
Once I started with this book, I immediately got hooked onto it – that world and characters were amazing and wonderful and real.
Such a nail-biting read! Eagerly awaited for the next chapter, for what was to happen next and how it will play out in the long run. It has been such a long time since I felt like this and I am so relieved this book brought me out of my book funk – yes. I have been reading other books but I needed to read a book like this to truly capture my attention and motivate me to bring me out of my book funk. Amazing experience!
Love the world and cannot wait to learn and experience more about it. The writing was flawless and attention grabbing. So descriptive and meaningful. Oh, and such a strong, bada** female lead!
Full of different worlds, powers, trust, lies, war, survival and love.
Perfect for readers of sci fi romances.
This was a great first start to the series…but in knowing how the series ends don’t do it. I have never felt so taken for granted as a reader and concerned about what romantic relationships are being modeled for younger audiences than when I read the last book. Be warned.
I loved this book! Kricket and Trey are amazing characters! I could not put the book down and enjoyed the audible version also! I did not want the book to end and went straight to book 2 in the same night.
I enjoyed this story and the lead character’s reactions to what was happening to her. I felt the story was well written and I very much wanted to know what was going to happen next. I enjoyed Kricket’s dealing with the Cavars. It was a little hard to stomach the minimization of women in this story.
I did not like the Kyon character and that Kricket is being set up to be in a romantic/sexual situation with him. Kyon is a ruthless killer who while smart and good looking is a bully and physically harms our lead character. I think it is a bad idea to write a story with a strong heroine attracted to such a person. That story line, however, is more developed in book 3 and I am having trouble with that story line. If you are going to rehabilitate a bully, he needs to stop hitting and stop claiming ownership, etc.
The immersion into the alien world/setting was a bit jarring in the beginning and could have had been spaced out for the sake of flow (i.e. there is a lot of slang/exposition introduced in a very short amount of time), but that’s a minor critique. The heroine is fierce and funny, and her and her entourage make for a great story.
its fantastic
“Under Different Stars” follows a young woman names Kricket who has grown up in and out of the foster care system her entire life. Kricket has learned to be a survivor. For the past couple of years she has been in hiding from the caseworkers, living with a friend, working under the table, waiting for the day she turns 18 and can live her life the way she desires. Before that can happen she encounters Trey Allairis who claims she is from an alien planet called Ethar. Trey takes Kricket prisoner back to Ethar. Meanwhile, Kyon Ensin has also been sent to bring Kricket back to Ethar to fulfill an prophecy. Can Kricket survive both men and make her way back to Earth?
I loved the world building that Bartol created. I could envision all of the creatures and plant life of Ethar. I was enthralled with the journey Kricket was on. The other two members of Trey’s team, Jax and Wayra were lovable, tough guys. They all had a mission to complete and yet at the same time were not unsympathetic to Kricket’s plight.
There is an obvious love triangle building between Kricket and Trey and Kricket and Kyon. Bartol has made Kyon to be a hated character so there has to be a saving factor soon or I am going to find it to be hard sell.
I highly recommend.
I love Kricket!!!! What a delightful read. I wanted to kick somebody, hug somebody, cry with somebody – the characters mind you, trying not to give away any plot information. Great book!
Finally a book that has great world building, a strong and smart female heroine who doesn’t make terrible decisions, with a nice love story that doesn’t take over the plot or make the characters make dumb decisions, which earned this book 5 stars hands-down.
This book is in no way slow. This book jumps right into the story that causes Krickets life to change forever. Not to mention the fact that Kricket is one badass main character. She is incredibly intelligent and calculated, brave, and strong. I mean this girl escaped from men kidnapping her at least three times. Even when her life was put in other people’s hands she was able to evaluate her situation and be smart about every decision she makes. She is also so much more than meets the eye. She is a priestess who is supposed to possess some type of power that she doesn’t know about. A war is on the brink of erupting to possess her for what she ca do.
I also loved every character in this book, even the bad guys were fitting. Trey is bae for sure. He is just friggin amazing. I loved him throughout this story and the slow growing relationship that he built with Kricket was so beautiful to read throughout the story. His two companions Jax and Wayra I loved so much, they were so much fun and brought something extra to the story. Their loyalty to not only Trey but Kricket was soooo great. Hell I even liked Kyon even though he is crazy for sure, but gotta admire his determination. He never gives up.
I loved this story and it was refreshing to get all the things I love out of a book. The writing style was amazing the way Amy built this relationship with her characters. You get hints of it throughout the story because their all so intrigued by Kricket and it draws people to her. I loved it so much. Kricket is awesome and a lovable character, Trey is my new book boyfriend. The world building was great, I loved this world Amy created. This is a must read if you like sci-fi romance books.
I have read this series 3 times! I wish it didn’t end but it is one of the best series I have ever read!
