Outstanding suspense story with terrific main characters, and I learned about Alaska and volcanoes while being thoroughly entertained. I recommend this book.
Loved it !
A wonderful book. Interesting, complex characters. A beautiful, intriguing setting. A disturbing, haunting murder spree that drives the story.
The setting is in Alaska with vivid descriptions of the mountains, an unstable volcano the harsh climate and terrain. A well-known Danish volcano expert who settled in Anchorage is killed along with his wife and child. The case is assigned to Detective Angie Johnson but a Danish Detective, Daniel Tropic is sent to assist. In many ways, they are different people and are not used to having a partner but they gradually come together to form an effective team investigating these murders.
Through the investigation, you learn more about the detectives, the victims and suspects. People are complex, driven by events in their lives, haunted by their pasts. As the Danish detective learned about Alaska, the reader is informed in a natural and unobtrusive manner.
Over-all, it was a well written story. They detectives were flawed, interesting characters that you become invested in. Through their awkward paring, you learned about their history, their flaws and watched them evolve from a reluctant team to something much more.
My only real complaint was that not as much attention was given to the killer. While we know the killer’s motivation, I got no sense of how he evolved into this deranged killer. Was he always this deranged? If so, how was it not apparent to those around him? If he evolved over time, it would have been a more interesting story to see the evolution (i.e., Silence of the Lambs).
That being said, this was a very enjoyable read.
Kept you at the edge of you seat. Didn’t want to stop reading.
This was my first novel by this author. I enjoyed the entire novel I’m usually pretty good at guessing plot points this other kept me surprised and entertained all the way. The two protagonists were interesting and original and unlike many of the other “set up a couple” investigation novel plot lines I have read.
This was a good book, once you get into the book. Several times I was ready to lay the book down, however once you keep reading, then you do not want to put down this book, you want to keep turning the pages to find out what happening next.
Did not care for it and didn’t finish it.
Really quite liked this book. Set in Alaska with a Danish cop teamed up with a native American and a pretty bad villain. Not sure it made me want to visit, but I don’t suppose that was the point of the book. Quite gripping towards the end.
Really enjoyed this book, I didn’t figure it out until close to the end. The action well paced with lots of twists. The two main characters were nicely developed with just a little frustrated romance. I highly recommend the book although it’s not for the squeamish!
Great read. Interesting concept – Danish Detective in Alaska. Not able to pick out the killer until the end.
This book captivated me in the first few chapters with murder and intrigue. Later, it became predictable in the fact that the murderer had to be a co-worker of the victim. A scientific topic is not very interesting to me, but I had to read the book to conclusion to finish the daughter’s story.
LOVED THIS BOOK
Entertaining
I enjoyed this book not only for the mystery that is developed, but it gave me an opportunity to ‘travel’ to location and experience life there, that I will likely not have in the real world. So it was a geography lesson, a sociology lesson, and an entertainment all rolled into one!
Not memorable.
Not your simple who dun it….nicely woven suspenseful story with believable characters and twists and turns. Well written and anyone living in Alaska will recognize the places and types of people. Can’t wait for another.
I hope more are translated soon.
Creepy!
This is by far one of the best thrillers I have read this year! I am looking forward to reading more by this author.
Great
