A great mystery
I thought I had it figured out, changed my mind and then switched back.
Great, tight story line with believable characters.
The second book in the Unlikely Series is chock-a-block full of action and suspense!
Grieving widower Eddie Mackey is trying to put the pieces of his life back together after his wife’s suicide. Bad enough Kathleen had cancer, worse that she committed suicide when he was deployed for combat. Only Eddie doesn’t think she killed herself, and when he finds out she was in remission at the time of her death, he makes it his mission to find out who murdered her, starting with one of the last people to see Kathleen alive – Miranda Hill.
Videographer Miranda Hill works with the dying, filming messages to leave behind for their loved ones before they pass. She’s both troubled and intrigued when a tough-as-nails yet grief-stricken marine shows up asking questions about his late wife. Miranda gets caught in the crossfire when Eddie’s investigation digs up more than a few secrets – including those from the Mayor of New York City’s Office. Can the pair work together to solve the mystery and protect one another as the stakes turn deadly?
Loved the suspense and plot twists! And the romance? Beautiful! Two people battling their own demons and learning to trust one another and more amid the backdrop of their investigation makes for a great read! Loved it!
A man in ruthless pursuit of the truth about the death of his wife ends up embroiled in a game of twist and turns in the hunt that reveals shocking truths.
9/11 is also at the heart of the story which was the turning point in the lives of the hero and his wife. Eddie Mackey went on to serve his country after and his wife who was a paramedic who was at ground zero saving lives ended up quitting and joining the mayors office as part of the hero campaigns. This is where they grew apart from all the time Eddie was overseas. When he returns for her funeral he cannot accept that her death was a suicide. Over a year later a letter convinces him that he was right and he sets out to prove it and to find out what was really going on all those years he was away.
This was a fast paced suspense with lots of red herrings and second chance for Eddie to make up for some of his failings as a husband and even find a second chance at love.
A real page turner! JB is the best author to surface in a very long time.
Short review. First time reading J.B. Schroeder book but certainly not my last. I enjoyed it had the right balance of mystery, suspense and romance. When Eddie Mackey tires to undercover the truth surrounding his wife’s death it leads him to questioning if he really knew his wife at all, she had so many secrets and lies she kept from him. I liked Eddie, he was not only loyal but determine to bring the truth to light no matter how much the things he discovered about his late wife’s life hurt him. Miranda irritated me through the first half of the book I get her reasons for being reluctant to share what a client of hers told her but unfortunately the more she held the key piece of information that Eddie need to help him find the truth the more I didn’t like her. It wasn’t until the middle of the book and her finally telling him everything from his late wife’s visit to her that I started to like her.
