As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became … World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

An well written story of an amazing person..
Definitely worth reading
Louis Zamperini is inspirational. This book does a great job telling his story.
Awesome read. Educational and a true page turner for those who love history.
The amazing story of Louie Zamperini, meticulously researched and written, very interesting information about world war 2 as well. Some parts of the book will be tough to read for tender/warm-hearted readers.
Good real life story, unfortunately the author seems weird in describing the event
Sort of convoluted story of a world-class athlete going off to war and becoming a POW at the hands of a sadistic prison warden. Eventually the two men come to terms. For me the story dragged, until later in the book when the promised redemption arrives.
Everyone needs to know and share in this journey. The trails and tribulations of the main character should be know to everyone.
This is a tremendous book! Not only is it a great story of a inspirational man. It is filled with significant information about WW II that most people never knew. I would recommend it to anyone looking for a wonderful, informative read.
This was a book club selection. After just a few pages, I couldn’t put the book down. The movie answered lots of my questions. I heartily recommend this book for someone who wants to gain knowledge while reading. This book still haunts me every time I search my Nook for the next book. Definitely planning to reread again
This book is packed full of information about World War II. Maybe sometimes a little to much if you don’t love history. Its a well written book. I usually pick the book over the movie every time. Not in this case.
I found this book to be historical regarding the olympics and WWII
So emotional.
A true story of a WWII prisoner of war. Fantastic read!
One of the best books I have read. Amazing testimony to the strength and perseverance of the hero of this book.
True story of a remarkable man and veteran who was a WWII POW by the Japanese.
Heartbreaking story that is well written about courage, honor and the ability to withstand and overcome…
Very depressing.
The strength of the human spirit as evidenced in some individuals, is impressive and inspirational.
Why had I never heard of Louis Zamperini before? Amazing story.
