As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became … World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

Wonderful book it kept me in suspence with wonderful characters . I couldn’t put it down
Excellent writing! Incredible research. Fascinating story.
Incredible story of human survival: lost a sea, then overcoming brutal Japanese captivity. Inspiring and enlightening.
Best book ever
The best book I have ever read and I read plenty. A true story of strength, resilience and finding your life again. Everyone should read this book. I have suggested this book to friends and family and like me, they could not put it down!
If you love history, this is the book for you.
Incredible true story. It’s very hard to imagine the depths of despair this man experienced and all the seemingly unsurmountable barriers before him and he still forged ahead with great courage and honor.
Loved this book
Our Bookclub read this a few years back..it was great for discussion. I personally love autobiographies & historical Fiction !!
Right up there with a Boys in the Biat… 2 of my current favorites! Love this author! Looking forward to her next book!..
Not sure that I’d say I enjoyed this book because it was in large part a harrowing account of Prisoners of war, but it needed to be read. I found the first part of the book uneccesarily longer. Read with a book club.
It was very informative, especially about what it was like being a prisoner of war. Also gave incredible insight into the horrors of war.
One of the most haunting, devastating books I have ever read. The author is masterful. It changed how I perceived the Japanese in WWII. That Louis Zamperini forgave these tyrants, particularly his demonlike chief antagonist, says enormous things about his character. Not for the faint of heart, that’s for sure.
Amazing, inspiring story.
Excellent real life story.
Ab-so-lute-ly !!
Unbelievable story that one knows is so true. As always the author has a masterpiece.
Extremely descriptive author who seems to cover every detail of her characters. When I later saw this movie I immediately recognized the people she had described. So many events that he endured that none of us could experience in our lifetime. Although these were tragic events they were told as though you were there with him and you felt …
One of the best books I have read in the last ten years.
A wonderful book about redemption and forgiveness.
