As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became … World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

I am so glad this true story was told. Our High School and Middle School students read it for our semester topic on Survival.
This was a great read and we did it in a book club. Also met and talked with the author when he was in the area. Read a number of years ago but still remember it which is not the case with many of the books I have read lately!
One of the best!
An amazing true story well told.
This book is a masterpiece, marrying history, tragedy and ultimately triumph. It also told the story of life-after-battle and the personal trials that often accompany that. Spellbindiing!
Very inspirational with strong characters, loved the book!

This book was referred to me by a dear friend who was involved in a long running television series about war. She loves all things about this subject since it was a big part of her life being on the show. I read the book before the movie came out, so I can tell you the book stands alone and is a must read if you love true-life inspirational …
