As a teenager, he channeled his defiance into running, discovering a prodigious talent that had carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when World War II began, the athlete became … World War II began, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to a doomed flight on a May afternoon in 1943. When his Army Air Forces bomber crashed into the Pacific Ocean, against all odds, Zamperini survived, adrift on a foundering life raft. Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would answer desperation with ingenuity; suffering with hope, resolve, and humor; brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would be suspended on the fraying wire of his will.

I was surprised to find this book one of the most inspirational I’ve ever read.
This was also a movie, well done both movie as well as book, but the movie skips the adjustment from POW to Freedom to returning to marriage, which failed. If you watched the movie, then read the book.
It’s been a while since I read this book. It was inspirational as well as realistic.
Absolutely amazing book and as soon as I finished, I went directly to Hillenbrand’s other work of astonishing research, Seabiscuit. Hillenbrand is an extraordinary author and top in the field of historical research (in my opinion). I classify her with McCullough, Caro, Isaacson, and Chernow. World class and high class.
Phenomenal! What a show of internal strength of endurance, demonstration of faith. Such a rich story — a must read!
Beautiful story.
It’s hard to imagine living the life that Zamperini lived. A difficult, but important historical work.
Laura Hildebrand is a wonderful author! I also recommend her book Seabiscuit. Unbroken was a bit slow at the start while giving the background of Louis Zamperini’s childhood, but was spellbinding as it progressed. (Forgive misspelled names.) The movie version is a pale shadow of this book.
Loved the book, loved the story. I can’t imagine living through half the things Louie did. Truly inspirational.
Amazing.
This really opened my eyes to brutality imposed upon US military !!! But the resilience the main character empowers is beautiful!! AND coming to forgive in the end.. Most Excellent Read!!!
Amazing true story!

I loved it! What an incredible story of redemption! I wholeheartedly recommend this book to anyone who loves to read!
Just a totally amazing book – true and tragic story of torture and a man’s will. I could not put this book down at all!
The truth is better than any fiction that can be created. A truly inspiring story!
