In this captivating and lavishly illustrated young adult edition of her award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller, Laura Hillenbrand tells the story of a former Olympian’s courage, cunning, and fortitude following his plane crash in enemy territory. This adaptation of Unbroken introduces a new generation to one of history’s most thrilling survival epics. On a May afternoon in 1943, an American … afternoon in 1943, an American military plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary sagas of the Second World War.
The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. As a boy, he had been a clever delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and stealing. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a supreme talent that carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when war came, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.
Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a sinking raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would respond to desperation with ingenuity, suffering with hope and humor, brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would hang on the fraying wire of his will.
Featuring more than one hundred photographs plus an exclusive interview with Zamperini, this breathtaking odyssey—also captured on film by director Angelina Jolie—is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the ability to endure against the unlikeliest of odds.

Page turner hard to put down!
This is the best book I’ve ever read and I read a lot. I couldn’t put it down. All those that I recommended it to that have read it say the same about the book.
Highly recommend
Anyone who hasn’t seen the movie could really enjoy the book. A kid who should have been in juvenal hall gets a last chance and discovers he has a natural talent for running track. He is one of the favorites for the 1940 Tokyo Olympics when the lead up the Pearl Harbor ends that dream. He ends up a navigator on a bomber…and it just gets more interesting.
Excellent story of survival ‘
What a survivor!
This is a true story. Hard to believe that anyone can survive after being a prisoner of war
one of the best books I have ever read
This is a book I use with college students because it describes the horrors of war, yet teaches the great resiliency of the spirit. The author writes in a manner that readily invites the reader to enter the lives of the characters and feel their joys and their sorrows.
The true story of an American hero.
LOVED this book! Read it many times!
the movie was soooooo sad – the book is soooooo good. Obviously would have made a GREAT movie if it had had a great director. Don’t miss the book.
Wonderfully written book about an insanely real event.
Louis was a great man and he told his story so well. I was excited to see him interviewed on television and sorry to hear when he died but he had lived a great life and he went to his just rewards.
Based on a true story and life, the book is wonderful.
An excellent read and a tragic lesson in history.
Wonderful, I love the way she writes.
The first 60-80 pages dragged, but I kept with the book and it did get really interesting. The POWs endured harrowing circumstances that were described in detail in the book. You couldn’t help but pray for the characters as you read about their ordeal.
This is definitely a good book for history buffs and those that read biographies on a regular basis.
Amazing book. Amazing! Loved every single word of this book. It truly honors this American hero the way he deserves!
Inspirational.
