In this captivating and lavishly illustrated young adult edition of her award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller, Laura Hillenbrand tells the story of a former Olympian’s courage, cunning, and fortitude following his plane crash in enemy territory. This adaptation of Unbroken introduces a new generation to one of history’s most thrilling survival epics. On a May afternoon in 1943, an American … afternoon in 1943, an American military plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary sagas of the Second World War.
The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. As a boy, he had been a clever delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and stealing. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a supreme talent that carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when war came, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.
Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a sinking raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would respond to desperation with ingenuity, suffering with hope and humor, brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would hang on the fraying wire of his will.
Featuring more than one hundred photographs plus an exclusive interview with Zamperini, this breathtaking odyssey—also captured on film by director Angelina Jolie—is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the ability to endure against the unlikeliest of odds.

One of my top 5 books EVER!!!
One of the best books I’ve ever read, and…I read it long before it was made into a movie. The movie does not do it any justice. Get the book; you won’t regret it.
Everyone spoke highly of this book but I disagree. The poor guy who first survives being adrift on the Pacific Ocean and then falls into Japanese hands during WWII is far from “unbroken”. He is shattered by torture which is grueling for us to witness. When he finally returns home he is saved by Billy Graham. Give me a break!
I literally couldn’t put the book down. There are parts that are hard to read because they are so tragic.
The book is a great read, skip the movie.
Gripping
Man’s ability to love and forgive among evil people and events.
Written too simplistically for my taste, but still interesting and informative.
One of the best books I have read. Amazing what Frank endured. Well written book that kept me riveted until the end.
This is a story aptly told which epitomizes the endurance and tenacity of the human spirit to endure. It is not an easy read but a must read. It puts one’s on life and one’s own trials into perspective. Do not think you know this story if you saw the movie… read the book!
Fabulous read. The history and characters’ personal stories are engaging but the excellent writing make this read like a novel.
A very excellent book!!!!!
Loved this memoir. Gave me a new perspective on WWII in the Pacific. A must read.
A powerful page-turner that is far superior to any movie rendition I’ve seen. This insider’s raw look into the life of an olympic athlete/POW is truth that reads stranger than fiction.
It’s everything the movie was and much, much more. The writing is terrific. I wanted to read it all the way through once I got to page 2.
One of the greatest true-life survival stories. Gripping non-fiction from a wonderful writer.
Amazing story of the will to survive against a tyrant and insurmountable odds. This book was so hard to put down and makes you feel like you were there.
An amazing story of survival
Fantastic book
One of my all-time favorite books. Engrossing true story.
