In this captivating and lavishly illustrated young adult edition of her award-winning #1 New York Times bestseller, Laura Hillenbrand tells the story of a former Olympian’s courage, cunning, and fortitude following his plane crash in enemy territory. This adaptation of Unbroken introduces a new generation to one of history’s most thrilling survival epics. On a May afternoon in 1943, an American … afternoon in 1943, an American military plane crashed into the Pacific Ocean and disappeared, leaving only a spray of debris and a slick of oil, gasoline, and blood. Then, on the ocean surface, a face appeared. It was that of a young lieutenant, the plane’s bombardier, who was struggling to a life raft and pulling himself aboard. So began one of the most extraordinary sagas of the Second World War.
The lieutenant’s name was Louis Zamperini. As a boy, he had been a clever delinquent, breaking into houses, brawling, and stealing. As a teenager, he had channeled his defiance into running, discovering a supreme talent that carried him to the Berlin Olympics. But when war came, the athlete became an airman, embarking on a journey that led to his doomed flight, a tiny raft, and a drift into the unknown.
Ahead of Zamperini lay thousands of miles of open ocean, leaping sharks, a sinking raft, thirst and starvation, enemy aircraft, and, beyond, a trial even greater. Driven to the limits of endurance, Zamperini would respond to desperation with ingenuity, suffering with hope and humor, brutality with rebellion. His fate, whether triumph or tragedy, would hang on the fraying wire of his will.
Featuring more than one hundred photographs plus an exclusive interview with Zamperini, this breathtaking odyssey—also captured on film by director Angelina Jolie—is a testament to the strength of the human spirit and the ability to endure against the unlikeliest of odds.

This was not my cup of tea reading wise. It seemed too bombastic for my tastes.
This is a marvelous book! I loved it! The book is written about a true American hero!
Thought this was a great book of WWII pow hardship and determination to survive.
I found myself cheering for Louie and the other POWs to hang on, hang on, hang on. Rescue is just around the corner. His is a story of multiple rescues and achievements.
Best book that I’ve ever read. I wouldn’t even go to the movie because it could not live up to the book.
Emotionally difficult true story. The author endured extreme circumstances that are at times hard to read but well worth the effort.
This book kept me thinking, “ what next”? I was so overcome with each new tragedy and triumph. This is a read I would most definitely recommend.
Great book! I have purchased several copies for relatives and friends.
A part of WW II I didn’t know a lot about.
Superb non_fiction!
Not great writing but a wonderful story.
One of the best books I’ve ever read. Leaf me feeling humbled by what Louie endured during his years in service. A hero by anyone’s standards
One of the very best! Beautifully written novel about a true American hero.
This story is REAL…. no glossing over the tragic circumstances faced by this warrior of World War II although I imagine things were much worse than described. How he survived all he saw and had done to him as a POW can only be explained by God’s grace.
I highly recommend this story of man’s worst and God’s love.
One of the best books I’ve read.
Best world war 2 book I’ve read. I couldn’t help but love Louie and felt horror and anger at The Bird still today.
