5++++++ Stars!!
All the stars and then some!!! Unbreak My Heart by Lauren Blakely is hands down one of favorite books by this author to date. It was so unlike her other books. So different from the rom coms we’ve come to expect. Heartbreakingly beautiful, full of angst and love. It’s a journey of self healing, living life to the fullest and second chances. I absolutely loved it! I was so impressed and in awe of Lauren Blakely’s words.
If I could have reached into the pages and hugged Andrew, I would have on multiple occasions. He has had so much loss in his life. My heart hurt for him. His most recent loss left him more broken and jaded than any before it. When he receives a letter that leaves him with questions surrounding his brother’s last year of life, he and the only girl he’s ever loved take off to Japan to seek answers.
Once again Lauren Blakely does a incredible job describing the setting. She paints this gorgeous picture of a country I’ve never been to but have now added to my list of places to see. She makes it feel like we are right there with Andrew and Holland in Japan.
I cannot recommend Unbreak My Heart enough!! Lauren Blakely’s writing is brilliant, and perfect and I just loved it so much!! Pick this beauty up immediately!
Go Dodgers!!

4.5 stars–UNBREAK MY HEART by Lauren Blakely is a stand alone, contemporary, adult romance story line focusing on twenty-five year old, best friends and former lovers practical nurse Holland St. James, and attorney Andrew Peterson in the aftermath of a tragedy that has affected them all.
Told from dual first person points of view (Holland and Andrew) UNBREAK MY HEART focuses on personal, spiritual and emotional healing. Three years earlier, childhood friends Holland St. James, and Andrew Peterson fell in love but graduate school found Holland in Japan, and Andrew entering law school wherein our couple went their separate ways until a family tragedy brings them together, once again. When Holland accepts a permanent position overseas, Andrew struggles with losing the woman with whom he is still in love. What ensues is the rebuilding romance between Andrew and Holland, as Andrew embarks on an emotional journey in an attempt to understand all that has happened and why.
UNBREAK MY HEART is a story of grief and acceptance; of tragedy and loss; of relationships, family and love. The premise is raw, inspirational and heart breaking: the romance is subtle and understated; the characters are sympathetic and determined. Lauren Blakely takes the reader on Andrew’s journey, such that we are one with the hero as he discovers there is life after death, and everything in between.
Love Ms. Blakely’s books and Unbreak my Heart is certainly a winner!
Lauren had me crying like a baby with this one! Love!
Heartbreak, loss, and the meaning of unconditional love, pulled at the strings of my heart while listening to the narration of this incredible novel performed by Joe Arden and Erin Mallon.
Through-out this emotionally raw and breathtaking story, I found that I had to take time to away for contemplation, as it brought up so many important issues about life and death.
Upon hearing the grief-stricken words during Arden’s performance and the learned more about the grief that Andrew was facing, I was in tears. I was soon comforted by the voice of Mallon, as she portrayed Holland, a former love interest to Andrew, and the only healthy balm left to help him cope with his pain.
Having been a long-time fan of Lauren’s I assumed that I would enjoy this story.
However, this was unlike any other story that she has written before — and I mean that in the best way possible.
I highly recommend this book, as it will show you another side of Lauren’s gifts as a writer, and take you on a cathartic journey you will not soon forget.
As Always, Happy Reading!
“5/5 Beaming Brains!” – Laura, Lit-Up My Mind
Loved it!
I have read many of this author’s books and I must say that this one is special. I think it’s special because I too had to experience the loss of a loved one from cancer. Ms. Blakely does a wonderful job of writing about the pain, the feeling of emptiness and the steps of how each person must go through in their own way to find the answers to the questions left behind. BRAVO on a well written book! I will definitely recommend this book
What a wonderful book…different from her other books …brought to tears to my eyes but also smiles…highly recommend it
Unbreak My Heart wasn’t just a story. It was a journey through heartache, nostalgia, love and acceptance.
Andrew and Holland were friends and then more but went in different directions. Holland still loves Andrew but knows she needs to give him space to heal, and Andrew is just trying to come to terms with his life after the death of his brother.
“When someone you love dies, there is a grace period during which you can get away with murder. Not literal murder, but pretty much anything else.”
I loved that Holland cared so much for Andrew that she was able to slow him the space to heal, but always staying close enough to support him when he was weak.
Unbreak My Heart is a beautiful story. The audiobook is narrated with rich emotional tones that brought the story right off the page and into my heart.
-4Stars!-
Not typical for Lauren Blakely. Was not light hearted at all. Heavy subject matter and some things were not well described… there is a whole lot of back and forth with Japan. I kept wondering if maybe the characters were from Japan, but until the very end no physical description is given, and even then, it is just to say that Holland has blonde hair. Otherwise characters were great and the story was moving
We are used to Lauren Blakey’s sexy and smart romantic comedies. Her male point of view is spot-on and those books are what propelled Lauren Blakely to the top of my list of authors I will read everything from. Lately, Lauren has been writing some beautiful books that bring the reader along on a journey. Wanderlust had the reader experiencing Paris with the character, and Unbreak My Heart brought us to Tokyo where I felt like I could smell the fish and see the crowded stalls.
Lauren also brought the emotion in Unbreak My Heart. While there was still some of Lauren’s smart banter, this book was pure heart-wrenching emotion. Not only was it a journey to Tokyo, but for Andrew, it was a journey from broken to healed. Andrew just lost his brother. His grief, guilt, confusion, and anguish over it leapt out to the reader and Joe Arden’s portrayal of those emotions was just incredible.
“Life is short. Make it count. Don’t have any regrets…there is no magic cure…The magic is in how he lived, how he died, and in the way he loved.”
While Unbreak My Heart is a romance, I would say it is really more about Andrew’s journey. When he heads to Tokyo meet his brother’s girlfriend and unravel some of the mysteries surrounding his brother’s last days, he brings along his ex, Holland, who also helped care for his brother in Tokyo during his last days. Andrew’s yearning for Holland and his yearning for the full picture of his brother’s last months crashed together to make a tumult of emotion and mystery that I never expected from Lauren.
Clearly, Holland and Andrew worked well together as a couple, it was just kind of the wrong time for either of them when they broke up. School and work pulled them to different countries, but they head on this journey of discovery in Tokyo together…but only as friends.
“Then I go one way, and she heads another.
Two directions.
Two lives.
Two apartments.
We’re together, but we’re not at all.
Perhaps it’ll always be this way. I cross the intersection and join the sea of people fanning out in all directions. I’m with all these people, but I’m still alone.”
Having a sibling that died young makes Andrew appreciate the here and now a little more. Maybe it’s time he stops taking the easy way out.
“At the end of my life, when I’m looking back, will I regret not doing this?”
While this was mostly Andrew’s journey, a big part of that journey was Holland. But he was so broken she had to make sure she wasn’t just a substitute or a crutch for him. While I found their relationship to be a bit secondary to the overall story arc, I loved the way it unfolded and found that the sweet and hopeful part of the second-chance-romance balanced out the darker, more emotional notes of healing from a lost brother and past breakup.
“Come back to me,” I whisper.
I loved the messages about living life and grabbing for happiness while you still can. I loved the way Lauren made you feel as if you were in Tokyo shopping the streets with the couple. I loved how Lauren wove a little light suspense into the story. I loved how there was no unnecessary additional angst. I loved so much about this story.
Likes:
•Totally different for Lauren.
•Still had great banter.
•No sex for the majority of the book, but when there was, wow.
•Lauren’s writing made Japan come alive to me.
•Arden’s narration could not have been better.
•Lauren broke me and put me back together.
•Andrew’s growth and healing throughout the book.
•It was dual (with some duet) narration, but because it was mostly Andrew’s journey, most chapters were from the male POV. I love the way Lauren doesn’t feel the need to switch back and forth.
•Duet narration in texts
•Awesome having new narrators for Lauren.
•Although there was a romance, it was part of the bigger story.
•The mystery that unfolded throughout the story.
Dislikes:
•The cover does not go with the book to me. It says sexy rom-com, not emotional and heart-wrenching.
•There could have been more story background at the beginning, I felt like I was kind of dropped in the middle of a story.
The Narration:
Lauren Blakely is one author where I choose the audio first. As an audio listener herself, I think Lauren writes with the listener in mind. Since this is very much Andrew’s journey from broken to whole again, Joe Arden needs to be commended for one of the best performances I have had the pleasure of listening to. Every bit of pain, confusion, hope, and love came through in his portrayal of Andrew. Erin Mallon was perfect in the role of Holland, and together they brought the reader with them to Tokyo for a beautiful, emotional journey of healing and love.
The Down & Dirty:
Read this book! Seriously, don’t be afraid because you see the words “heartbreaking” and “healing” thrown about. Lauren Blakely delivers an emotional, powerful story of family love, healing, living life to the fullest, second chances, and going after your bliss. Though Unbreak My Heart is a more serious, emotional read that most of Lauren Blakely’s other books, she delivered a wonderful blend of hope and friendship that ran throughout the story, so the emotions never threatened to pull me under. We still have Lauren’s trademark crisp and witty dialogue and inner thoughts, smart and realistic characters, rich location descriptions and a swoony couple with tons of chemistry, but Unbreak My Heart delivered even more. Listening to this story made it even better. While I normally like to listen to lighter books than I read, Joe Arden’s portrayal of the broken-yet-seeking Andrew was one of the best audiobook narrations I have had the pleasure of listening to. Either way you get it, via print or audio, don’t miss out on this fantastic read from Lauren Blakely.
PS: While this may be one of my favorite Lauren Blakely books, that doesn’t mean I want her to stop the romcoms though, I can only take so much emotion!
“In his kiss, I taste hope and a future.”
Rating: 5 Stars, 4.25 Heat, 5+++ Narration
I listened to the audio of this for review. It was breathtaking, emotional and healing all together. The relationship between Andrew and Holland was a slow burn but perfectly timed. Andrew is going through some major life changes and needs to learn how to depend on himself.
Emotional second chance romance, angsty, emotional, bittersweet, hopeful
all the feels!
