Excellent book!
Two Reasons to Run is book two of the Pelican Harbor Series. You definitely need to read book one to enjoy the book to its full extent.
Police Chief Jane Hardy was recently reunited with her son Will, and receives a threat while investigating a potential terrorist plot, “Stop or Will Dies.” This book is action packed and I absolutely couldn’t put it down. I enjoyed seeing the relationship between Jane and Will’s dad, Reed. I’m already counting down to the release of book 3 to see if the two are able to reconcile, or if the past is just too much to overcome.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley. All opinions are my own.
One of the advantages of series with the same lead characters in each book is the character development. And in the second book of Colleen Coble’s Pelican Harbor series, readers get to learn more about the pasts and relationships of Jane and Reid. All while rooting for the two of them to come together in the present.
Of course, since Two Reasons to Run is a romantic suspense, there is plenty that gets in the way of that. A murder, a terrorist plot, and threats to Jane’s newfound teenage son keep everyone on the edge and scrambling to uncover the mystery before someone is hurt.
While enough details are given about the first book in the series, reading them in order will enhance the overall experience. Plus, you won’t have to wait months for the second book like many of us did.
Kudos to Coble for pouring the time into these characters and I will continue to root for Jane and Reid in the third book (and any more after that the author would like to write).
Disclosure statement: I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book and was not required to write a positive review. All opinions are my own.
Two Reasons to Run is book two in a trilogy and should be read after book one. Police Chief Jane Hardy took over for her dad after a bunch of things went down in the first book of the trilogy, including meeting the son she did not know was alive. Old feelings are on the rise between Jane and Reid, the father of her son but Jane is still reeling from all the lies and secrets. When an oil rig worker reports possible terrorists threat on his offshore rig and then proceeds to disappear. Jane runs head long into danger as even her son is threatened. In a super action packed and heart pounding plot, Jane takes on the bad guys, tries to heal her heart, and maybe even find a little faith. The story has many interwoven threads that lead to different separate plot points and ends with a to be continued for Jane and Reid’s story. Rich world building and interesting characters make for a page turning, enjoyable Christian romantic suspense. My voluntary, unbiased review is based upon a review copy from Netgalley.
This second book in the Pelican Harbor Book was one I was looking forward to reading. I do think you have to read the first book (One Little Lie) first. The characters did grow and change a bit in this book, but I will admit that I was hoping for a bit more progress in the storyline.
What I liked …
We continue to get to know some of the people in town.
Jane is valued and appreciated for what she does on the job by the guys in her life. Strong women characters are not always admired. But clearly Jane is honored by her fictional family.
The continuing friendship between Jane and Olivia is well-developed.
I did like the fact that there were a few story lines going on – that makes it seem more like real life.
My favorite quote regarding small towns: “The coconut telegraph at work”
The quote from Screwtape Letters was a nice addition.
Having part of a plot take place on an oil rig was interesting.
I liked that Will was able to connect with some more family, and I especially liked the fact that the character was named Gretchen. 🙂
What I did not like …
I know that many issues that I have with certain plot points will be resolved in the next book. But certain aspects, such as continued unforgiveness, bothered me. Jane kept relying on the person that she refused to forgive. That was not logical to me. I think perhaps this book was maybe a touch too long. It felt a bit more like the middle part that you sometimes want to skip over. I really enjoyed book one, and this one was a bit flat.
My final rating: 4.3 – not quite enough to bump it up to a 5 star book. That being said, I am looking forward to the third book in this series. I will definitely be reading that.
Two Reasons To Run is the second book in the Pelican Harbor series by Coble. It would be best to read One Little Lie (the first book) before reading this book, so you will understand the interweaving of the characters. This is the continuing story of Police Chief Jane (She follows her dad, who was chief before her} her ex, Reed and her 15 year old son who she thought was dead until both reentered her life. Now she and Reed are thrown together to investigate a new mystery. Keith McDonald has gone missing. No clues to his whereabouts. He just disappeared from an oil rig out in the gulf. No way this could be …… but overboard. There is lots of suspense and drama with twists and turns. I never guessed who the villain was till the end. This book has it all. I can’t wait for book three…..I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review, but am happy to do so.
Two Reasons to Run by Colleen Coble is a continuing novel in a new series. This continues the life of Jane Hardy and her escape from the cult. Now she is coming to terms with her reality as a police chief. The suspense kept moving, but I actually looked forward to reading more about Jane’s past as she and Reid worked together to try to solve this mystery. The mystery has been done, but there was a nice twist that I didn’t see coming. It was nice to read something different. The romance between Reid and Jane is nice because they had an awkward beginning and are trying to figure out who and what their relationship actually is. Overall, this was a wonderful romantic suspense novel that checks all the points for this genre. This was a good addition to a romantic suspense novel. Definitely pick this book up.
I received a complimentary copy of Two Reasons to Run by Colleen Coble from Thomas Nelson Publishing, but the opinions stated are all my own.
“STOP OR WILL DIES.”
Having just recently been reunited with her son, Police Chief Jane Hardy knows something terrible is brewing again in the small town of Pelican Harbor; obviously her investigation regarding a supposed terrorist plot involving a Mobile Bay oil platform has rattled the wrong person. Realizing that there is only one place where her son would be out of harm’s way, Jane and Will’s father Reid, move with Will into her father’s private compound. Now it’s up to Jane to continue her investigation without risking her heart or losing her son.
But are they really safe, or will the two most important men in her life give her a reason to run?
Admittedly, I was a bit disappointed in “Two Reasons to Run”, possibly because I had been so enamored with “One Little Lie”. Rather than delving deep, this book felt as if I was barely skimming the surface of what really is a very good story. That being said, I have full confidence that this author will rebound with an exciting conclusion, because the final chapters of this book were the best. And isn’t that the way it should be?
From the first page I was hooked. Colleen Coble surrounded me with mystery and I couldn’t get enough. With no way of guessing what could happen next I was taken on a crazy and twisted adventure. As Jane and Reid leave to visit Zues the huge oil rig, weird things keep happening. And not just between the two of them. Their chemistry was fun to watch, and undeniable, no matter how much Jane tried to fight it. I loved seeing the family dynamic as Jane learned what it was like being a mom. If you haven’t read the first book in this series, I think you can read this one alone. That being said, I think you will enjoy it all the more if you start their unique story from the beginning. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys Suspense and Mystery. Colleen Coble is a master at mixing just the right amounts of suspense, romance, and mystery. She also often sprinkles in a little creepy and deranged for good measure. I received a copy of this book from Thomas Nelson publishers and was in no way forced to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.
First I want to say that this book is the second in a series that should be read in order. This book picks up where the last one left off and I think it would be hard to connect to the characters and understand the full story line if you don’t read the first book.
I was in the mood for something fast paced and full of suspense and mystery and this book definitely delivered that. It was a good change from the other genres I’ve been reading as of late. Jane, Reid and Will are becoming very familiar to me. I am invested in their stories and how their family will re-shape and how it will all end for them. There are several loose ends individually and collectively for these characters that will continue into the next book.
The relationship between Jane and Reid is very slow moving and not terribly romantic so I wouldn’t really label this as a romantic suspense but that isn’t to say I don’t like it, because I do. I thought the story was interesting and like I said, the forward momentum was great. I loved the constant danger that kept me engaged. I’ll be looking forward to the next book!
Content: peril, violence, kissing

Two Reasons to Run by Colleen Coble brings readers back to Pelican Harbor. Note: It helps to read One Little Lie first, as Two Reasons to Run picks up a few weeks later. Jane and Reed’s relationship is on shaky ground, while Jane tries to get to know her son. But naturally Jane finds herself smack in the middle of another mystery.
While the story brings drama and intrigue, much of the plot centers around the characters trying to figure out their ever-changing circumstances. Jane now becomes a mother after fifteen years. Reed deals with his son, his feelings for Jane, discovering his long lost relatives, and his ex-wife. Jane is a great character – her credits include being police chief and having escaped a cult. She’s strong, yet comes to grips with her need to let others into her life – especially Reed. She struggles to forgive both her father and Reed for past lies.
The plot is complex and I like that it follows the same characters as the prior novel – but don’t think things will be wrapped up when you read this story. It definitely leads into the next novel in the series.
As far as suspense, the small-town-murder-mystery vibe continues from One Little Lie. Jane investigates in the midst of death threats and multiple murder. Things get intense when Jane’s son becomes a target. Not too many plot twists, but the story is fast paced with enough intrigue to keep suspense fans happy.
You can’t go wrong with a Colleen Coble novel. She always brings readers great characters and edgy, intense story lines. Definitely check out this series.
**********Audio Book Review**********
I am such a fan of audiobooks, so I was excited to receive my first review copy for an audio version! I thought the narrator (Devon O’Day) was fantastic and kept up the suspense level throughout the story. I find fast-paced novels work best on audio, and the pacing and story line mixed well together. There is only one narrator, which I prefer over a variety for each character. This is very enjoyable and entertaining novel as an audiobook.
.
Overall Rating: 4 stars (I liked it a lot and would definitely recommend)
Suspense Rating: 4 stars (lots of action and suspense to keep me intrigued)
I received an ebook and audiobook review copy of this book through NetGalley. All opinions expressed in this review are my own
Two Reasons to Run is the second book in Colleen Coble’s Pelican Harbor series, which is set in Pelican Harbor, Alabama. Police Chief Jane Hardy Is working long hours as she brings two new replacements on board her small police force for the officers lost recently. (One Little Lie).
Jane is asked to investigate the disappearance of a young local oil rig worker. His mother received an email from him shortly before his disappearance telling her to go to the authorities if anything happened to him and warning of an imminent terrorist attack on the oil rig. As Jane does so, investigative reporter Reid Dixon is also investigating the oil rig based on emails he had received from the missing man.
As both become embroiled in these investigations, the sadistic mind behind it all sends his henchman to threaten the wellbeing of their son, Will. In a spellbinding story of greed, loss, and revenge, the reader is taken on a wild ride straddling the major investigation and the backstory of Jane and Reid that spans multiple locations until culminating in a remote seaside setting during a raging storm.
This is yet another intense thriller by Ms. Coble. Her descriptions have you right along side her main characters and will keep you rapidly turning the pages late into the night. I did enjoy this book and I do recommend it!
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Thomas Nelson through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
Two Reasons to Run is a great addition to the Pelican Harbor series. It is book two in the series and I highly recommend that, for this series, each book be read in order, or you will miss out on important details regarding the backgrounds of the two main characters, Jane and Reid. Each book has its own mystery that must be solved and the plot in each book is wrapped up nicely, however, Jane and Reid’s story is ongoing throughout the series.
I am simply loving the Pelican Harbor books! I read the first book, One Little Lie, and I listened to the second book, Two Reasons to Run. The audio narration for Two Reasons to Run was very nicely done. There were slight variations in voice for certain characters to help the listener know who was speaking. This audio book definitely kept me listening, as I tried to figure out who the villain was!
Will, the teenager in the story, frustrated me a bit in this plot. He just did not seem to “get” that he was in danger. I guess he had some growing up to do emotionally. He did eventually realize that the danger was real and ended up making some very good decisions. He was still a character that I really liked and I was happy with how everything resolved.
I have loved the dynamic between Reid and Jane ever since book one. They continued to have wonderfully complicated emotions toward each other in this book. I am really looking forward to book three!
I received a complimentary copy of this audio book. All opinions are my own.
TWO REASONS TO RUN. Colleen Coble.
Keith been working at an oil rig site for two years, feeling uncomfortable lately of what was going on now, Was it sabotage and to destroy the coast line, or was he over reacting and with no proof, who would listen.
The second book wraps up the murder in the first book. In this we have another murder, and will wrap up in the next, or third book.
The relationship between Police Chief Jane and Reid moves forward. The plot flows to the end with twists and turns. One drawback was not wrapping the story up, instead of carrying in over to next book.
Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion by Net Galley and Thomas Nelson.
Two Reasons to Run is the second book in the Pelican Harbor series, and continues the story of Jane, Reid and Will. Jane is doing her best to protect a oil rig from terrorism as she tries to build a relationship with her son. I would recommend this book to others.
I received a ARC from NetGalley and the publisher and was under no obligation to leave a favorable review, all opinions expressed here are my own.
WHAT IF SHE STAYS?
TWO REASONS TO RUN (The Pelican Harbor Series Book 2) is even more fast paced and filled with much more heart racing excitement than Book 1! Author Colleen Coble definitely ups the ante on grabbing on grabbing her readers attention early and keeping it until the final sentence is read. Book 2 starts exactly where Book 1 ends. Chief Jane Hardy is still coming to grips with an elaborate scheme to frame her father, the former Sheriff of Pelican Harbor. That was only the beginning of the mysteries that were unraveled in Book 1. She is now reunited with her presumed dead15 year old son Will and his father, famous documentarian Reid Bechtol.
I particularly enjoy this series because the fictional setting is based on an area that I am very familiar with. As a reader, I always draw mental pictures of places and characters in my mind as I read. This time I do not have to as I know EXACTLY what the setting looks like! Also, when the setting in a small town, it seems as if the town seems to become a character in its on right. This setting is on the Mobile Bay and the mystery involves a murder on the oil platform Zeus. As the investigation begins, things quickly begin to not add up. One of Pelican Harbors native sons is the victim and he managed to leave some clues to a serious environmental threat that is looming. Only now he is missing, presumed dead, no body found yet but the time is ticking according to the information he managed to sneak out.
From this point on, Coble takes readers on an edge of your seat adventure that involves such things as: being ordered to stand down by Homeland Security even when disagreeing with their assessment, deep diving under an oil rig, being challenged by everyone, everywhere that there is no threat but continuing investigating anyway, realizing your son is in danger and having to put him under protection. Jane has a plethora of reasons to run. But what if she stays? The ending is one of the greatest of all times! You will be spent as you read the final page! This is one of my favorite series!
I was provided a complimentary copy of this book by Thomas Nelson and NetGalley. The opinions expressed here are completely my own and without influence.
I did not read the first book in the series, while I feel like I missed something and plan on reading it next the author did catch a reader up to date in this book. I could not put the book down the author keeps you on the edge of your seat from page one, when you think you know who did it, the author those a twist and takes you down a whole other path. I loved Will he was a strong headed kid with a big heart. Jane has a broken spirit but when it comes to Will she will stop at nothing to protect him, even if that means setting aside her feelings for Reid. I did not like the end of the book because it leaves you hanging and I want to know what happens. Otherwise this book was amazing and is a clean read. Grab this book you will not regret it. I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.”
A thrilling sequel to “One Little Lie” with Police Chief Jane Hardy. She is enjoying her time with her son Will, after missing the first fifteen years of his life. Her relationship with Will’s father, Reid, is strained, but maybe there is a chance for forgiveness. Her relationship with her father, who is a prepper and saved her from the cult, is complicated. A man is missing from the oil platform and it is believed that he committed suicide, but Jane is not so sure. The man emailed his mother and Reid, with information as to a possible terrorist attack against the platform. No one in security or federal law enforcement listens as Jane searches for the missing man. A death threat aimed at her son, seals the deal for Jane…no mercy for whomever is plotting against her son and her community. I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
When a local man Keith McDonald disappears off an oil rig, Police Chief Jane Hardy and her ex Reid Bechtol have to put aside their differences to work together. With Keith’s suspicions of terrorism and not enough evidence for Homeland Security to be involved, they need to keep their town and the people on the rig safe. Their son Will is threatened if they don’t stop the investigation, but they have to stop the threat to their Alabama town. I received a free copy of this ebook from the publisher. This is my honest and voluntarily given review. This is a very suspenseful book. I really like that the book is told from both Jane’s and Reid’s point of view. I think that the relationship between Jane and Reid is realistic since Jane has trust issues. There is plenty of action and suspense in this book. I enjoyed reading this book and look forward to the next book in this series.
Two Reasons to Run
by Colleen Coble
Book 2 in the Pelican Harbor series
Rating: 4.5/5
Release date: September 8, 2020
The story continues with Chief Jane and Reid and their son, Will. I was excited to dive back into the Pelican Harbor series and it did not disappoint. The story will make more sense if you read the first book, One Little Lie, but the background info is summarized fairly well, so I don’t think it’s absolutely necessary. However, One Little Lie was also an excellent read so I’d still recommend starting from the beginning of the series.
Jane is still reeling from all the lies her father told her. She continues to feel betrayed by her father and even Reid, the father of their son. As chief, she starts investigating the disappearance of a local on an oil rig and suspects foul play. Homeland Security won’t listen to her, so she must continue to investigate on her own to stop a possible terrorist attack. Reid is willing to help her since the man who disappeared had also asked him to help. Together they move from clue to clue to figure out who’s behind the threat all while trying to protect their son, Will, whose life has been threatened in an effort to get Jane to drop the investigation. Meanwhile, Jane and Reid go on a journey trying to find relatives, which brings up a lot of baggage from their pasts. Can these two continue to work together and protect their son while trying to prevent a terrorist attack?
I love Colleen Coble’s stories. They just keep on getting better. I really like continuing with these main characters and how they need to deal with real life challenges. The situations they are in really do require the inner strength that only comes from faith. I also wasn’t able to guess the ending, which I was pleasantly surprised by. I am eagerly awaiting the conclusion to this series, Three Missing Days.
I highly recommend this book and series if you enjoy contemporary Christian stories with romance, action, mystery and suspense.
My thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.
You can still enjoy this book if you haven’t read the first one in the series but I would highly recommend that you do so first. If you do not you will miss a lot of the subtle nuances that make the story rock. Jane, Reid and Will are trying to put the pieces of their family together. Jane and Reid get caught up in a new case which puts them all in danger. The story is fast paced and filled with adrenaline as they try to stay one step ahead of a killer. It is also filled with a deep abiding faith that allows Reid to trust that things will turn out well. The story will conclude in the next book and I cannot wait to see if these three get the happy ending they deserve.
