The action is constant and the emotional tension intense. Great characters and builds well on the first book. Loved it!
I love intense romantic suspense that is still clean and uplifting. Colleen Coble’s books always keep me turning pages when I should be cleaning the house. I love that! Don’t miss this fast-paced and intriguing novel.
TWO REASONS TO RUN (Pelican Harbor Book #2) by Colleen Coble is the second action packed Christian romantic suspense/mystery in this trilogy series. The small coastal town of Pelican Bay’s Chief of Police Jane Hardy is a 5’2” strong, determined and justice driven spitfire who also happens to be a survivor of a cult. While the suspense/mystery is unique and solved in each book, Jane and all the main characters’ personal stories carry over and are a large part of the story. I feel the books in this trilogy should be read in order.
Chief of Police Jane Hardy is now firmly in control of her small-town police department after taking over from her retired father and surviving the scandal from “One Little Lie”. While she has been happily reunited with her fifteen-year-old son Will, who she believed dead, she is still coming to terms with the betrayal she feels from his father, Reid.
A local mother has reported her son missing when he does not return from the giant oil rig in the bay. She gives Jane an email from her son that suggests there is a terrorist plot against the oil rig and he believes he is in danger. But with no other leads and no body, Homeland Security drops the case.
Reid uses his job as a journalist/documentarian to gain access to the rig. He and Jane find the missing man dead and tied under the oil rig. As Jane and Will move forward in the investigation, they receive threats that if they continue, their son Will’s life in on the line.
I loved this book as much as the first which of course makes me anxious for the third. I believe this author does a great job of balancing an intriguing investigation, building suspense and dealing with all the characters’ personal lives in this small town which comes to life in her worldbuilding. Jane is a complex character dealing with her past in the cult, her development of her current spiritual beliefs and her relationship with Reid. All the secondary characters are fully fleshed and realistic. Though there is faith-based dialogue, it never felt out of character or like you are being preached at.
I highly recommend this Christian romantic suspense/mystery and author.
Two Reasons to Run by Colleen Coble is the second in the Pelican Harbor series. Jane is a fierce woman who has endured a lot of heartaches and survived! I did not read the first book in the series, One Little Lie, and I would have understood more about the characters in this book if I had read the series in order.
The opening scene of the story is heartbreaking! Jane is the Chief of police in Pelican Harbor, Alabama. Ruby comes to Jane with concerns about her missing son. Keith had emailed a message to his mom with suspicions of a possible plan of sabotage on Zeus, the oil platform in the Gulf. He had instructed his mom to take the information to Chief Hardy if he did not come home.
As Jane tries to find more information about Keith, she receives a warning. She must stop her investigation or her son will be killed. Jane will pursue all leads to find answers to a possible terrorist or protestor attack on the oil platform.
Jane also has a family conflict that has not been resolved. She had been raised in a cult and she had been ‘married’ according to the cult practices to Reid and she had a son. Jane escaped with her father during a fire at the compound. Jane’s father told her that Reid and her son Will had died in the fire. In the first book of this series, Jane learns that Reid and her son are alive fifteen years after the escape. Now Reid wants Jane back in his life with Will.
There is a lot of action scenes in this story and Jane is unrelenting in trying to find the truth. The humanity and spirit in this book are about forgiving, trust, and having faith. I look forward to reading the third book, Three Missing Days.

Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an opportunity to read and review this book.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this novel in exchange for an honest review. It is set to be published in September 2020.
“Two Reasons to Run” by Colleen Coble is the second novel in the thriller series Pelican Harbor.
It’s a very enjoyable read, with interesting characters, an unusual kind of investigation (the murder that kick-starts the plot is apparently connected to the threat of a terrorist attack against an oil platform, which – if not prevented – would bring about an environmental catastrophe).
Reading a thriller so different from the usual, trite stalker/serial killer plot was a breath of fresh air in a genre that is often victim of clichés and stereotyping.
The relationship between the main characters is also very original and the “family” dynamics among Jane, Reid and Will are extremely interesting to explore.
I have to admit, I haven’t read the first book in the series, “One Little Lie”. At first I was worried this would impact on my understanding of the plot and characters of “Two Reasons to Run”. I was pleasantly surprised, though, at how reader-friendly this novel is, even for somebody who hasn’t read the first instalment in the series. The essential backstory information is provided without boring the reader with too many details. It was just the right amount of facts to allow me to enjoy the current story… and pique my interest about all that happened in the characters’ past. I will definitely read the sequel, and maybe even go back and read the first novel in the series, because it’s just that compelling.
I borrowed an audiobook copy of this book from the local library and thoroughly enjoyed the book. In this book Jane Hardy who still reeling from the events of the first book, must solve new murders and figure out if there is a threat to the Oil Rig in the harbor, before I sit sabotaged. Reid Dixon tries to help her. When their son Will’s life is put on the line they take him to her father’s bunker, but can they fully protect him? Mystery, and intrigue are front and center in this book.
Ms. Coble has crafted an edge-of-your seat masterpiece! I was immediately drawn into the drama. The twists and turns kept me turning the pages. I read this novel in one sitting.
Recommend to readers who enjoy inspirational romantic suspense.
I won an ARC copy. I’ve expressed my honest opinion.
What an “on the edge of your seat” read! It has a little something for everyone though…a little romance, a bit of everyday family struggles, and a lot of suspense.
Excellent!!!
Fantastic!
Great sequel to the first book in the Pelican Harbor series. Colleen Coble has done things a bit differently in this series. She’s spread out the story of Reed and Jane over three books. The first book left on a cliffhanger and this book does as well.
Jane is the police chief in the small town of Pelican Harbor. In the first book, she and Reed were getting close to one another, up until he revealed the secret that his son Will was really Jane’s son also whom she thought was dead. Jane has trust issues anyway, but this caused her to pull back from Reed while trying to balance a relationship with her new found son.
There’s a death at the beginning of the story that happens on the local oil rig, as well as a rumor of a threat to blow up the rig, but no one is really taking it seriously. As Jane and Reed investigate the death of the young oil rig worker, they are also investigating their complicated past, as well as a threat on Will’s life.
There’s plenty of drama and action in this second book. However, just when you think things may finally start going right for Jane and Reed, another wrench is thrown into the mix. Excited to read the third and final book in this series. Can’t imagine what other mysteries and surprises lie in store for this couple and their son.
Colleen Coble is a wonderful Christian writer and her mysteries are worth reading.
Love Colleen Coble books! Keeps you interested up to the end & great characters!
Wow! What a great book! This was a “sit on the edge of your seat, up all night” kind of book. So many twists and turns! I enjoyed getting to know Jane, Reid and Will more. Looking forward to reading book three.
This mystery/thriller had things I liked and things I didn’t. First, I did not know it was the second in a series until after I started listening and some things weren’t making sense. We are given some of the backstory in the blurb, but it’s minimal and wow, there’s a lot of backstory for these characters. Apparently, there was a cult, an underage marriage, some kind of fire, fleeing, and lies. Now, some of that was easy enough to figure out as this one progressed and information was doled out, but it started to feel like the more information I got about the past, the deeper into the background this case seemed to get – and that was what drew me to the book in the first place. Then, there was the whole thing between Jane and Reid and Jane’s dad. Some things should never be kept secret, and some secrets can break a relationship. All the way through this book, I kept thinking that I couldn’t imagine how Jane could move forward with either Reid or her father, and as a mother, I’m pretty sure I’d be homicidal.
Jane has a lot of back and forth on trust, or the inability to trust, which is understandable. Then there’s Reid, and I will say that I liked his faith and determination, but given those earlier mentioned secrets, I never really warmed up to the character. I also like the personal touches and getting to know the detective in a case as well as main characters in a series, but it reached a point where the case Jane is working felt like it was almost completely buried in everything else – right up until it was needed to bring this book to a climax and conclusion.
On a positive note, I really liked Devon O’Day’s performance on the audiobook. She did an excellent job conveying the various emotions as well as the tension in different situations. I would say those who read and enjoyed the first book in this series will like this one much better than I did. I just prefer a little more focus on the case at hand than what I found here.
Great series. Well thought out plot and characters. Setting is beautiful coast and topic is very timely. Good read!
It was exciting and kept my interest.
With Jane and Reid working against time to stop an oil platform from being blown up these is there is lots of action and many lives at stake. Danger lurking everywhere and little time to follow the evidence. I liked that she found out more about her past and how her son is now in her future. Family, job, romance and mystery! I really enjoyed the multiple story lines going on here.
I have off and on over the years read a Colleen Coble book, but this is my first suspense that she has written. The plot is really interesting and kept me on my toes. I’m also a big fan of reading about women in traditionally male dominated roles. Colleen does a really great job at balancing the MC’s, Jane Hardy, family/home life.
I would advise anyone interested in this novel to start with the first book, One Little Lie. I read this one without doing so and felt a bit lost on Jane and Reid’s history together and individually.
I listened to the audio and thought the narration overall was good but I didn’t love her character voices.
I am going to go back and read One Little Lie and continue on with the series as they release.
Thank you to Thomas Nelson and NetGalley for the audiobook. All thoughts in this review are my own.
An enjoyable series with a little romance and suspense.
In book two we continue to learn more about the background of Jane, Reid, and Will. As Jane is coming to terms with her new family she has to stop a possible terrorist attack to an oil rig in the bay.
This is a fast-paced read that has you on the edge of your seat at times. I suggest reading book one first so you understand the relationship between Jane, Reid, and Will.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Thomas Nelson, through Netgalley. All opinions expressed in the above review are entirely my own.
