From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jill Shalvis comes a new story in her Heartbreaker Bay series… love can’t last.
Is the one you can’t have…
To say Diego has been taught the hard way to bury emotions is an understatement. But when he’s called home to help the brother he hasn’t seen or spoken to in years, that’s one thing. It’s another entirely to also come face to face with the first woman he ever loved. First and only…
Can love conquer all?
Daisy’s learned to depend only on herself, and Diego is and always has been an island of one. And yet when they’re together, even when they’re bickering, still wary and haunted by memories of what was … it’s magic. The question is, how to find their way back to each other…?
Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.

Twist of Fate is a novella from the Heartbreaker Bay series but can be read as a stand alone. This is a second chance at first love with comical matchmakers providing the excuses to interact with each other. Diego and Daisy were childhood sweethearts that believed they had their happily ever after but then Diego’s father had a severe stroke, his brother left him to handle his father’s care, the house and the family tattoo business. Daisy left for college and tried to maintain a long distance relationship but finally gave up when Diego kept pushing her away. Diego has returned to be the best man at his brother’s wedding and Daisy is the wedding planner. Now that they are face to face, they must resolve the past in order to have their future. This was a quick, easy read with fun characters and a range of emotions and issues.
This book went so fast I feel like I missed something! A quick second chance romance will have you wanting a lot more to Diego and Daisy’s story.
This is Hearbreaker Bay, #8.5. It is a novella.
“When the one you want … is the one you can’t have … can love conquer all?”
Daisy is an event planner. Currently she is working as a wedding planner. She finds it ironic that she is working on a job that brings her back into contact with the man who showed her love cannot last.
Diego is called home to help the brother he hasn’t spoken to or seen in years. He has long been taught to bury his emotions. It is one thing to help his brother, it is another to come face to face with the first woman he ever loved… the only woman he has ever loved.
Daisy learned long ago to only depend on herself. Diego is a man who is an island of one. He never counts on anyone for anything. They find that whenever they are around each other, the magic is still there. It doesn’t matter what they are doing, they are wary and haunted by memories of what was.
Can they possibly find their way back to each other?
I really enjoyed this novella; I almost wish it were longer. i have not read all of the other books in the series, yet, so maybe they are involved in some of them. i sure hope so. I love the premise of how they were each set up by the two grooms in the wedding that Daisy is planning, and Diego is best man for. It was fun reading how they made their way and figured out how to work with one another to save their love.
I love going back to Heartbreaker Bay and boy seeing all Jill Shalvis has done so far in this series is still surprising. We have Diego back in his hometown and everything he has lost is coming back twicefold. We have the woman of his dreams, Daisy closer to him than ever and all the feelings he thought were gone coming back. Then we have Diego still upset about all his lost in the past but seeing that maybe it was for a good reason now. All in all this was a beautiful addition to the 1001 Dark Nights series and once again Jill Shalvis bringing this town to life.
“I received an eBook copy from the publisher for the purpose of an honest review. I was not compensated for this review: all conclusions are my own.”
A second chance romance that is sweet but sexy. Daisy was Diego’s first love but with a misunderstanding that ended it all. Now Diego has returned home for his brother’s wedding and they can’t deny the sexual chemistry that they share, but can old wounds heal.
A short read but thoroughly enjoyed. Loved the second chance reconciliation of Diego and his brother too. This is part of series but can be read as a stand alone.
DNF. Even though I have read all the books in this series, I couldn’t get into this one. It was almost like it wasn’t even part of the Heartbreaker Bay series (except for being set in San Francisco). I wasn’t feeling the chemistry between Diego and Daisy. Diego just seemed overly bitter and jaded.
Back to Heartbreaker Bay!!! I was so excited when I won this book!! I love this series and this was like going home again!! Daisy and Diego were once together but miscommunications got in the way. Now with a wedding of Diego’s brother, one he hasn’t seen in years, but a nice surprise of the wedding planner Daisy. The girl he can’t forget, the one that he loved forever. This time though maybe there is a second chance at love?
Great short story that will have you not wanting to put it down until the end!! Sweet, romantic and perfect!
Thank you Inkslinger for an advanced copy. I voluntarily reviewed this book. All opinions expressed are my own.
Twist Of Fate
Heartbreaker Bay #8.5
By: Jill Shalvis
*REVIEW* .5
Twist Of Fate is a new novella addition to the Heartbreaker Bay Series. This is the story of Daisy and Diego, young love that ended in heartbreak. Years later, Daisy has a most ironic job as a wedding planner who cannot find love herself. A wedding has brought the past back into Daisy’s life because Diego’s brother is getting married, and Diego is back in town. They still have feelings, and it is obvious where this is going. Still, the journey has a few bumps, and these two have some wariness about opening up to love. The course of true love never did run smooth. I enjoyed reading the story of Daisy and Diego, but I wish it had been a bit longer. I did not get to know them as well as I would have liked, and the whole thing felt a little rushed;however, there are shining moments that make this novella engaging and charming and entertaining for Jill Shalvis fans to read!
Man, I absolutely love an amazing second chance romance, and that’s exactly what the latest addition to Jill Shalvis’s fantastic Heartbreaker Bay series is.
Twist of Fate stole my heart from the start and the hella awkward re-meet-cute between Daisy and Diego.
And then every awkward repeat meeting—all due to the sneaky tactics and matchmaking tendencies of Rocco and Tyler and impending nuptials. Just how were Daisy and Diego going to deny their help when the “overwhelmed” grooms needed them so?
Rocco and Tyler=masters level manipulators. And I loved every minute.
I also loved the romance between Daisy and Diego and how they never stopped loving each other, never stopped wanting each other. And it was so wonderful to see them get their happily ever after.
Twist of Fate was a terrific afternoon escape and only whetted my appetite for more in this series. ~ 4.5 stars
This was a quick fun novella. Diego comes back to San Francisco for his brother’s wedding and his wedding planner is Daisy, Diego’s ex. I enjoyed this second chance romance although with all novellas I wish there was more.
TWIST OF FATE by Jill Shalvis is book 8.5 in the Heartbreaker Bay Series. This is the story of Daisy and Diego. I haven’t yet read the previous book so for me this was a standalone book.
Also this was a second chance at love Novella Read. Diego was returning from being away which has him meeting Daisy again. Diego taught Daisy that love is a heartbreak. Both still have feelings for each other but have issues they have to work through but they are getting some help finding their way back to each other.
Enjoyed this quick read.
It was meant to be…on the third go
I’m a fan of Jill Shalvis and I’m pretty sure that’s not a secret. I will read anything she writes and I will enjoy the journey to love and happy ever after’s.
BUT…
I find myself wanting and needing more when she writes a novella/short story. Twist of Fate needed a little bit more journey for me to truly believe in Diego and Daisy’s happy ever after. Sure, they had history and it’s obvious they were meant to be. There was a little too much forgiveness that happened quickly. I’m still peeved at Rocco (Diego’s brother) and I didn’t really feel that the separation between Daisy and Diego was delved into enough.
There was also the matter of their second chance at love needing a third. These two knuckleheads really need to communicate better. I just needed a little more proof that they weren’t going to keep pushing each other away.
BUT…
It’s a Jill Shalvis and I still laughed, squirmed and sighed and finished with a smile on my face. She’s just that good.
I love the Heartbreaker Bay series and I thought this was a great novella to the series. It’s a quick read that for me could be read in one sitting. I love a good second story and this one fit that bill. Daisy and Diego had a bright future, but life and misunderstandings caused a rift that could bot be fixed. Now years later fate has given them a second chance. Will they take advantage of it? Or will history repeat itself?
3.5 stars
Diego returns to San Francisco for his brother’s wedding and finds out his ex-love is the wedding planner. It’s a bit tense until their first kiss, and then Diego and Daisy are suddenly thinking they might pick up where they left off. They do have some past trust issues to resolve first, but it’s clear that the feelings are still there.
I adored Diego’s brother Rocco and his fiance Tyler. They were a sweet part of the story and I found myself wanting more of their story.
I love the Heartbreaker Bay series from Jill Shalvis, mostly because it takes place in my favorite city and the characters are engaging and interesting. While I did like Daisy and Diego and their second chance story, Twist of Fate is just too short to develop deep feelings for these characters, which is why I’m rating this 3.5 stars.
Daisy and Diego’s second chance romance was a a great read with easy quips, emotional moments, and magnetic chemistry. An added bonus was the hilarity of machinations from Diego’s brother and his fiancée to get Daisy and Diego back together.
Twist of Fate (Heartbreaker Bay, #8.5) by Jill Shalvis …..I love everything Jill writes and this was no exception… Daisy and Diego separated 10 years ago….now she is planning her best friends Rocco’s (he is also Diego’s brother) wedding to Tyler. They get Diego to come back to be best man…he and Rocco also have issues. There are lots of laughs, some tears, misunderstandings, steamy stuff all to get us to a very HEA. This is a wonderful second chance romance.
Even though I love Jill Shalvis and have read lots of her books, surprisingly enough, I haven’t read any of the Heartbreaker Bay books before now. Fortunately, “Twist of Fate” is a complete standalone that does not seem to be directly tied to any of the previous books in the series, though it’s possible that some of the characters were mentioned in passing.
The main characters of this novella, Diego and Daisy, were both very likeable and surprisingly well-developed given the story’s short length. I am generally a fan of second chance romances and this one was no exception, although Daisy and Diego’s relationship development did feel a bit rushed to me. I find that to be the case with many short stories and novellas, however, so I wasn’t especially bothered by it here.
That said, I was a little bit bothered by the way that Daisy seemed to put so much of the blame for their breakup on Diego, mainly because he “didn’t ask if she was OK” after she left to attend college in New York City. She wasn’t wrong to want her boyfriend to take an interest in her life and feelings, but communication goes both ways, and Daisy easily could have said something to Diego about what was going on without him having to ask. Their relationship still might not have worked out in the long run – distance is really tough, and they were both dealing with a lot of other pressures – but it is not fair to say that Diego was the only one who contributed to their problem communicating.
In spite of that small frustration, I really did enjoy “Twist of Fate,” and I would recommend it for both new and existing Jill Shalvis readers. I very much enjoyed my first visit to Heartbreaker Bay and plan to check out the other books in the series as soon as I can.

Twist of Fate gives new readers a glimpse into the Heartbreaker Bay series of books from Jill Shalvis. I absolutely adore a reunion romance, and I enjoyed Daisy’s and Diego’s story.
Daisy and Diego are former high school sweethearts who haven’t seen each other in years until Diego comes home to San Francisco for his brother’s wedding. Of course none other than the one time love of his life Daisy is the wedding coordinator, and they keep being thrown together to fix many last minutes changes for the wedding.
Twist of Fate hit so many of my happy places. I found myself laughing too many times to count. The romance between Rocco and his fiancé Tyler honestly was almost my favorite part. They were so cute together and I loved they wanted everyone to be as happy as they were together. I liked the reunion between Diego and Daisy, but it seemed to move pretty slowly considering this story was a novella. So much misunderstanding about the past seemed to color a possible future as well. They had a great connection and wonderful chemistry, but needed more communication to really make their relationship move to more than just a physical relationship. I will say once they both started talking and listening to each other, I loved them as a couple.
I’m a pretty big fan of the Heartbreaker Bay series of books and highly recommend them to romance readers who love emotional and funny contemporary romances. Jill Shalvis remains one of my go-to authors for stories filled with happily ever afters.

This is a great second chance story set in Heartbreaker Bay. We get a glimpse into that world in this novella, but this is a stand alone. It’s filled with tension, laughter, regrets, emotion, chemistry, and love. A quick, romantic read.
3.25 stars. Twist of Fate is a novella in the Heartbreaker Bay series. Diego has returned to town for his brother’s wedding as best man. His ex-girlfriend, Daisy, is the wedding planner. The two are forced to spend time together as they participate in wedding festivities. They find they still have strong feelings, but they must get over their past together and move on to have a happy future.
This book felt a little short, even for a novella (beginning at 14% and ending at 93%). I enjoyed the book, despite it’s length. I just felt there was enough story to expand into a longer book. The end felt rushed. They got back together after the climax on the next to the last page with very little resolution or time together. I enjoyed the story, however. The concept and the writing were good. I liked Diego and Daisy, too. They were really sweet together with good chemistry.
Overall, this was a quick, easy, sweet and entertaining read. I enjoyed it, just not quite as much as the full length books in this series. I still love Heartbreaker Bay and look forward to more from Ms. Shalvis in the future.
