From New York Times and USA Today bestselling author Jill Shalvis comes a new story in her Heartbreaker Bay series… love can’t last.
Is the one you can’t have…
To say Diego has been taught the hard way to bury emotions is an understatement. But when he’s called home to help the brother he hasn’t seen or spoken to in years, that’s one thing. It’s another entirely to also come face to face with the first woman he ever loved. First and only…
Can love conquer all?
Daisy’s learned to depend only on herself, and Diego is and always has been an island of one. And yet when they’re together, even when they’re bickering, still wary and haunted by memories of what was … it’s magic. The question is, how to find their way back to each other…?
Every 1001 Dark Nights novella is a standalone story. For new readers, it’s an introduction to an author’s world. And for fans, it’s a bonus book in the author’s series. We hope you’ll enjoy each one as much as we do.

Diego Stone had lived in San Diego for the past few years. He returns home to San Francisco after he receives a text asking him to help with his estranged older brothers wedding. They haven’t spoken in years, and it’s awkward, but even worse is coming face to face with the only woman he’s ever loved. He didn’t think he’d ever see Daisy again. It had been ten years, and the sight of her still rocked him to his core. She’d once felt like his missing piece, and his home. He found her new confidence sexy as hell, and the attraction still sizzled between them. He’d forgotten what desire this intense could feel like, but he needed to keep a level head, and keep his distance.
Daisy Evans is a 30 yr. old single woman living in San Francisco who works as an event planner. She’s currently working a wedding when she runs into the man who broke her heart, and never left it quite the same. Diego had been her first love, and first everything. He’d been the one person who’d always gotten her, and she’d missed his friendship. He’s back in town for a week, and she figures they just need to do their best to avoid one another. They clash at every turn, but one touch, and they discover the magic between them still exists. Can they find their way back to one another, or is it too late for them?
Twist of Fate (A Heartbreaker Bay Novella) by Jill Shalvis is a 1001 Dark Nights standalone story that is full of insane chemistry and sexy banter. I love this entire series, and this story was fantastic! I adored Diego and Daisy together and couldn’t put this book down!
A magical reunion filled with passion, angst and the reawakening of forgotten love! With TWIST OF FATE, Jill Shalvis brings fans of her Heartbreaker Bay series a new novella taking place on the outskirts of that world. We don’t see the typical cast of players, but there is mention of a couple of them as well as the setting.
Diego quickly caught a reader’s eye as a character with a lot of baggage to unravel. He still lives in the shadow of the heartbreak that drove him out of town ten years ago, and we can’t wait to learn the details of his story.
Daisy is a bit of a mystery. She was his first and only love and left to pursue her dreams, yet now she’s back in town and seemingly his estranged brother’s best friend.
I recommend this story to anyone wanting a quick delve into a Shalvis world to try her writing style out and of course to die hard fans as well, because we always wait to devour anything new. You can always count on delectable characters, passion and angst alike tearing the characters apart and then putting them back together again for a satisfying ending.
I have discovered a new favorite author. After devouring this, I have to read the other stories in the series. This was a perfect taste of a second chance romance. The undeniable connection and chemistry and pull between Diego and daisy was electrifying. I only wish this would have had an epilogue because I need more Diego and daisy.
Getting an emergency notification that he needs to attend a planning meeting for his brothers upcoming nuptials, leads Diego down a path that makes being the best man more of a war than a time of happiness when he finds out the wedding planner is the woman from his past that he let get away. Daisy knows she is going to have to deal with Diego, but she tries to be aloof and professional. But can the feelings they both shared come back to the surface, especially when they are thrown together to complete wedding task? Or will this be a wedding that crashes and burns because the past is too much to overcome? I instantly fell in love with the love/hate relationship between Diego and Daisy. The storyline had me laughing out loud and in other times had me sighing with delight. This was the perfect combination that made this short but sweet story really pack a punch.
I’ll be honest and say this novella started out quite strong and had me turning pages quickly but now that I finished it all I can say is I want to slap Daisy a few times… I mean don’t get me wrong Diego also deserves a slap or two but she came off as a selfish little brat back when they were 18 and again now when they were reunited. I get they were young and stupid but still at a mature age I expect more from people and maybe thats on me.
Unfortunately this story didn’t do it for me and I’m (sadly) giving it 3*. Hoping the next one in line will blow me away.

Second chances are not easily given. They are fought for. Looks like Daisy and Diego are in for the fight of their lives. Shalvis brings her signature humor to a Twist of Fate. When past misunderstandings bring two exes together after ten years, it’s up to fate to help them rewrite the stars and find that happily ever they’ve always wanted. Heartache finds a sense of humor and a hint of temptation.
***2.5 stars***
Twist of Fate by Jill Shalvis is a short novella. It is part of the 1001 Dark Nights world & also book 8.5 in her Heartbreaker Bay Series. There were very steamy moments, a lot of misunderstandings between the main characters (Diego & Daisy), & mistrust. It has a lot of potential but It was predictable & I didn’t really connect with the story.
