How can a family vacation turn into a dangerous situation, just wear a badge! in “Twice Removed”
As we previously learned Jack was working on a family problem. It is a well-known fact that the marriage of an agent is always in jeopardy, with the long hours, out-of-town trips, possibility of reassignment, and never having a set schedule or day off. No matter what, all plans remain uncertain in case they got that hated call. Julie, Jack’s wife, had finally had her fill with it, she moved in with her parents. This city was where she wanted to live, and she did not want to uproot her children again. She told Jack that she wanted him to take a job with a local company in Minneapolis heading up their security. She had even set him up with a head hunter to find positions that he could consider. Finally, Julie agreed to return home if he promised to work with the head hunter. Even though she had given him the ultimatum, she had never stopped loving Jack, just his job!
Off they go to the lake near Pelican Rapids for two full weeks of vacation. It had been a while since he had family time, and everyone was looking forward to it. After settling in, Julie had been in the water with the kids when she lost her wedding ring near the water’s edge. Try as he might Jack could not find it. They decided to go into town and maybe find a metal detector to help them locate the ring. Plus, they needed to get supplies and fishing licenses. Arriving in town, they came across a rough-looking younger man yelling and shoving an older man. Being in law enforcement, Jack just could not walk away, he stepped in to help the man. The young man became belligerent, and Jack subdued him with a little force. As he held him a younger woman came up to help the older man to his feet and then introduced herself, she was Chief Angela Rancone with the Pelican Rapids PD. The older man introduced himself as Cyrus and stated that he was just visiting. Now, this is the beginning of the mystery of the missing gold and the chief’s drug problems.
Join Jack as he works with Cyrus and Chief Rancone, discovering drug dealers and the secret of the gold, plus more surprises in Jack and Julie’s life…
What did I like? Not sure how I managed to receive a short story called “The Last Assignment,” but when I finished reading it, I knew that I wanted to read more from this author. Promptly I downloaded his “Critical Incidents” books, after I finished them, I realized that I should have started with this series, although it did not lessen my enjoyment. We met Jack Miller in book one and it was exciting, now that he and Julie have reunited, we have a new mystery and lending a hand to local law enforcement to combat an age-old problem regarding drugs. In Doug’s writing style, I certainly feel comfortable with his characters and storyline, in the same way, that I did when reading one of James Patterson’s or Michael Connelly’s books.
What will you like? I thought the fireworks were only in the first book! But look out because there are more rockets to blast off in this one. This is filled with action, mystery, intrigue, gunplay, bad guys, and missing gold! When you put all of those together you get one heck of a read. As I said, Doug’s characters are relaxed and easy to relate to, but he adds this edgy feel to them that makes them pop off the page. Here again, there was more to this book than just the storylines action, there was this deeper sense that included camaraderie, intelligence, and friendship. I certainly enjoyed this book and definitely all of Doug’s books that I have read, I will unquestionably be on the watch for any new ones in the future.

Great story to read by the cracklin’ fire! The characters draw the reader in immediately and Dorow weaves a good tale. Currently free but well worth the read at any price. Add another Minnesota author to the reading list!
Being a Minnesota girl and having grown up in west central MN i was very curious to see how accurate the representation would be. The only thing I thought was odd was the trip from Staples to DL. One bypasses New York Mills so there is no slowing down. The slow down would be in Wadena.
Very interesting story line regarding Civil War era gold.
Great story telling.
Rather sophomoric.
Fun read. Needed to get to end to find out who dunit
This book is about a FBI agent who helps a small town cop while he is on vacation with his family. He also helps an old man who is being assaulted by a family member. The old man takes a liking to the FBI agent’s kids and takes them fishing. The small town cop is dealing with overdoses and wants help.
Very interesting character development!
