The author of the New York Times bestselling Cat in the Stacks series is back with more Southern charm and beguiling mystery as Charlie Harris and his cat Diesel must find a killer in a room full of librarians… Charlie is stressed out. The Southern Academic Libraries Association is holding this year’s annual meeting at Athena College. Since Charlie is the interim library director, he must … library director, he must deliver the welcome speech to all the visiting librarians. And as if that weren’t bad enough, the keynote address will be delivered by Charlie’s old nemesis from library school.
It’s been thirty years since Charlie has seen Gavin Fong, and he’s still an insufferable know-it-all capable of getting under everyone’s skin. In his keynote, Gavin puts forth a most unpopular opinion: that degreed librarians will be obsolete in the academic libraries of the future. So when Gavin drops dead, no one seems too upset…
But Charlie, who was seen having a heated argument with Gavin the day before, has jumped to the top of the suspect list. Now Charlie and Diesel must check out every clue to refine their search for the real killer among them before the next book Charlie reads comes from a prison library…

I always enjoy this series. Diesel is so loveable.
I really enjoyed this book. Did not see the ending, which since I read a lot of books is unusual for me. It is well written an a pleasurable read.
The killer was outfoxed and he was the one who died instead of his victim.
This was a fun read. The characters were well developed. The situations were realistic. It was just a fun read.
Being a book lover, I enjoyed the details of the various librarian personalities. Being a cat lover, I enjoyed the details of Diesel, the Maine Coon cat of Charlie Harris, the central figure of the story, although I wished for more…Charlie has some decisions to make in his personal and professional life.
I loved the book. The characters are individuals one would want for friends. The plot is engaging but not intense.
Interesting enough series to keep reading.
All the books in this series are great and easy reading.
A very enjoyable cozy mystery. Charming and entertaining. Love the Maine Coon, Diesel.
Another enjoyable Charlie the librarian mystery by James.
I love this series, and having a male librarian as the lead character is a nice change in cozies–I have liked all the books in the series. Even my friends who profess “not to like talking animals” have enjoyed the very expressive cat in these books. As a cat lover with a Maine Coon of my own, I approve!
This story and murders are in the setting of Southern Academic Libraries Asso annual meeting at Athena College in Mississippi. There are two murders that need solving plus two personal issues to work out. There are twist and turns throughout. It’s a good easy fun read. Although I enjoy this series the theme isn’t my favorite. That is personal bias. I’ve enjoyed all the books in this series and find them well written. I would recommend this series.
Athena College is playing host to the Southern Academic Libraries Association convention and Charlie Harris’s old grad school classmate Gavin Fong is giving the keynote address. Charlie doesn’t have fond memories of Gavin, and an encounter opening night proves that Gavin is still as arrogant as ever. But when Gavin collapses and dies in the middle of his speech, Charlie is surprised. Yes, Gavin was a jerk, but who hated him enough to kill him?
As always, this is a strong mystery, with conflict and tension set up from the very first chapter. We have several strong motives and suspects before Gavin dies, and we get some nice twists before the logical solution. The suspects are all believable, and the returning characters continue to be strong. Charlie’s cat Diesel charms like always as well.
I just can’t praise this book, and all the others in this series, enough! A beautifully crafted cozy mystery! More!!
