Jim Butcher’s breakthrough #1 New York Times bestseller starring Chicago’s only professional wizard, Harry Dresden. When it comes to the magical ruling body known as the White Council, Harry is thought of as either a black sheep or a sacrificial lamb. And none hold him in more disdain than Morgan, a veteran Warden with a grudge against anyone who bends the rules. But now, Morgan is in trouble. … Morgan is in trouble. He’s been accused of cold-blooded murder—a crime with only one, final punishment.
He’s on the run, wanting his name cleared, and he needs someone with a knack for backing the underdog. So it’s up to Harry to uncover a traitor within the Council, keep Morgan under wraps, and avoid coming under scrutiny himself. And a single mistake may cost someone his head.
Someone like Harry…

Turn Coat is book eleven in The Dresden Files series by Jim Butcher.
Hot Dame what a start. Warden Morgan is in trouble; suspected of treason against the Wizarding Council and he turns to Harry for help.
If you’ve been reading this series you know Harry and Morgan don’t get along and also that Morgan is dedicated to the White Council, his job as a Warden, and a stickler for the rules. Harry would love to turn him in, but he knows that Morgan would never break the Laws of Magic.
Things just got more harry… He’s got two days to find the traitor in the White Council. After that Morgan and anyone that helped him goes down for the crime. Things get complicated fast. Friends and family get hurt and no one will be the same after it’s all done.
I enjoyed seeing Waldo Butters the medical examiner again. I adore and love Harry’s dog Mouse. Then we have Molly, Murphy, and Thomas. Each character grows on you and to see something happen to them that will change things; is good and also sad. Things with Thomas after this installment won’t be the same and we don’t know where Harry and him stand. I cried a little and was proud that Harry still says he’s his brother no mater what.
Turn Coat has no shortage of suspense, surprises, lose, and more. The Dresden Files is an extraordinary Urban Fantasy series. I can’t wait to see what’s next for Harry and the gang.
Rated: 5 Stars
The Dresden world is getting more interrelated as each book passes. Who is leading the Black Court? Great trip to Chicago’s magical side.
Cozy lovers may not enjoy the battle scenes but they’ll enjoy the connections between the characters.
This is the 11th book in the series, and brings a resolution to something that has been building up over the past few volumes.
I’ve been binge reading the whole series in order, and reviewing as I go. My reviews focus on setting readers’ expectations, rather than summarising plots. The most important aspect a new reader needs to know is that the series has an over-arching story arc, with roots starting at book 3 (Grave Peril) but only becoming visible as more and more of the series unfolds. It’s a great thing, but as it continually colours events around Dresden it’s best to read the series in order.
*** What to expect
This volume finally gets to what Butcher has been building up for a while, the unknown traitor within the White Council. You can expect to see more of the main characters from the Council, with the fanatic Morgan and ambivalent Luccio takign the stage. It’s a thriller-paced urban fantasy, with fast moving intrigue, action, and many plot twists. Harry spouts his usual brand of flippant humor in the face of the supernatural, even as stakes grow higher all the time.
*** What I liked
I like Harry’s wise-cracking attitudes towards life, and in dealing with supernatural horrors. I like the supporting characters in general, and I find Butcher is doing excellent job in characterising and building recurring cast and introducing new characters. The long-running support cast are especially complex, and one can see them maturing between books. They deliver emotional payoffs for dedicated readers, with their lives and deaths having meaning.
*** Be aware
This is part of a series, and you really need to read them in order. Butcher has Harry’s mental dialogue to recap previous events and dialogue for those who read the series in breaks, which can feel like he’s talking too much (and also may grate on some reader’s nerves as a “telling” style, or simply for being repetitive). It’s just a function of a long-running series, but as entering the series mid-way is not recommended anyway it doesn’t offer much to new readers while could be distracting to fans.
Also, some readers may find Dresden attitudes chauvinistic and misogynistic, though that is a both a trope of the genre and something of a failing of his.
*** Summary
This volume delivers on promises that has been built throughout this excellent series. It’s a great example of a fast-paced, urban-fantasy thriller. If you want a blend of modern-day thrillers with dark fantasy, this is the series to read – just start at Storm Front.

OMG how is it that I’m on book 11 n a series and there was not one book I disliked.
Were there books I liked less and things I didn’t care for, yes. but I can honestly say there is a book I really didn’t like.
One thing I’m not a huge fan of is that almost in every book, Harry is willing to sacrifice himself to save those he loves. Yes I get it and I think most of us wold but does it have to be in every book, I mean its pretty save to say we all know he will survive somehow and the real danger is not there . Now that I got that out of my system , I still love Harry and would do anything for him …. well almost. I also still love the series, as it gets more and more complicated but also more fun the further we get in.
I love his relationship with Molly and how it grows, but also how much Molly is growing while we still very much being told that she did mess up before and her mistakes are not just swept under the rug.
Harry has some issues in the romance department … Again,,,,, that poor guy I really hope that he does find his match one day and can be happy. And yes I’m still bitter about Susan and holding out for her to come back . Karen I still think is best as a friend and I love their friendship.
There is also some things happening with Thomas, which does also cause some issues between Thomas and Harry and I’m curious to see how it will effect things.
Overall , such a great book and there of course was so much going on that I’m sure I forgot something but overall I loved this book and looking forward to the next.
I rate it 4.5
This is series has so many books and yet I never get tired of Harry Dresden or the rest of the wonderful characters. I can’t wait to read what’s next.
Once addicted to Dresden there is no turning back. I love the Dresden series even if the early books have some cringe-worthy things. Overall, I read them and reread them. They’re fun and funny. Silly too!
Love the series, although the 2 from 2020 had maybe too much setup then too much action? Growing verbosity problem. And the question of where the previous trip to hades fits in.
Any Dresdon novel is fantastic
Great addition to an excellent series
Whoa, things in this series just keep ramping up. The stuff that happened in this book was not what I was expecting in the least, and some of the outcomes left my heart aching in ways I didn’t think it would. Just when you think things are going to turn out the way you expect, the way you hope, Butcher expertly throws a twist that leaves you reeling. By the end, the dots being connected in your brain from previous books makes you realize that things are about to get reaaaal ugly, and. . . well, I know in my case I can’t wait to pick up the next book and see what happens with my favorite wizard.
Harry is one of the best male characters that I’ve read and he keeps me coming back for more. He’s a complex hero and a powerful wizard with plenty of raw talent. I love Harry for his honorable nature and his desire to help those who can’t help themselves. He inspires steadfast loyalty in his friends and a healthy dose of fear in his foes. in this one, he must aid Morgan who is wounded and on the run, charged with a murder he didn’t commit. Great supporting characters abound, along with plenty of evil baddies. A rollicking story full of action, adventure, and just the right dose of magical intervention that was a pleasure to read.
This is a great addition to the Dresden Files, an witty, sarcastic and action-filled urban fantasy. As always, it is best to read this series in order, but each book can be read stand-alone, as Jim Butcher fills in the blanks as he writes.
Terrific series! Morgan shows up injured and accused of murder. But asks Harry for help. So Harry tries to find the real traitor. Lots of action.
Any one that likes ‘The Dresden Files’ will love this adventure.
Butcher is my favorite author; the Dresden series my absolute favorite of all time; if you start you will want more; sorry the series had to end.
I can’t recommend this entire series any higher. Currently re-reading the series for the 3rd time (while waiting for his new book to come out)
Awesome read
The most depressing in the Dresden files so far, this was well-written but I didn’t enjoy reading it.
My first read in the Dresden series… awesome!
i love the whole series
