Great book with twist I did not see coming.
I have mixed feelings about this book. The plot is tight, the clues are there, the people seem very real but many aren’t likeable and the ending left me empty.
The character of Holden is written well and I could feel his pain and anger…an eleven year old kid with a garbage bag holding his clothes.
Then there is the “family” that takes him in…Mark, career in politics, Em, wife, and Betsy their daughter, also just eleven. Then you have the posse, made up of the moms with power and wealth and their children, the bullies
Em wants to take in Holden and have him be a part of their lives…..Em is either very naive or oblivious to think a pre- teen will just fit in. And her husband Mark is okay with it, maybe to boost his career. Betsy is easy going and likes the idea of a brother.
But Betsy is and has been bullied at school and I can’t understand why Em and Mark don’t take measures. Instead of another child, take care of the one you already have.
Then there is Cooper, Em’s old high school boyfriend, a detective with the local force.
And the shift in the book comes hard and fast as Betsy is killed and it’s murder and Holden is the suspect.
Clues are there, but the background of the adults makes it difficult to see what is going on behind the scenes. The fact Em is still in love with Cooper seems more out of romance novel, along with the secret Em keeps. Mark is hard to figure out, he’s playing the devoted husband but seems to be a shadow in this drama.
The conclusion left me feeling as if Betsy was sacrificed and the identity of the killer was unreal. I felt like it was a bad episode of a tv show. The only real people are Holden and Em’s friend Trista. If you love famiy drama, youll enjoy this….I did not.
Adopting a child is challenging, and adopting an older child has even more challenges. When this family adopts this young boy the family is destroyed, but the mother’s love continues throughout the struggles, proving that motherhood does not necessary mean giving birth to a child.
Overall it was definitely worth reading but had to skip over the swearing . If you can believe in ‘gut feelings’ then you will definitely connect with this mother as she adopts 10 year-old Holden. Then tragedy strikes when Mark and Emery’s biological born daughter dies………
It is an easy read which keeps you wondering for a while. But, had the feeling that the author had not really researched someone that at least was in the adoptive parent experience. I could tell towards the end how it would end, because it basically had to, but believing the twist at the end could happen is zero. There were numerous errors, whether grammar, tense or things like having two same words together, which was distracting.
This was a very good read. Kept me guessing till the end. I would recommend this book.
Hard to forget
You never expect the ending until you are at the very end.
Would give it a five except for the swearing.
Had to stop reading for awhile. It’s pretty intense.
could not put this book down
Good writing style which keeps you guessing until the end. Near the end turns into a different kind of story that it started out as. Conflicted feelings about the main character. But, worth the read.
I loved the way it portrayed women. It broke your heart and then put it back together. The lead female character proved just how strong a woman can be against all odds and just how far a mother will go to protect her child.
This was an absolute “i dont want to.put this down, ” book. I, of course, knew who it was, then again i knew who this was, but the author kept me on the edge of my seat, SUCCESSFULLY for the total length of the story. I certainly will refer this author !!
This book was fantastic. There were several twists that shocked me. I was unable to put it down. It’s well written with great character depth. Seemed realistic for the topics it addressed. Great great read.
I enjoyed this book, Really tested a mother’s love for her children both blood and adopted. Writer included a few twists in the book to keep you guessing.
I really enjoyed this book
I couldn’t put it down!
Very good book. I really did enjoy this book and the ending was so unpredictable and good. I hope to read more books by this Author.
What can I say? It’s just plain old GOOD!!!
