Beth and Donovan have come a long way from Hurricane Sabrina and the San Francisco earthquake. Now they are approaching their wedding day and anxiously waiting to promise each other a lifetime of love. The journey down the aisle isn’t smooth, though, as they receive threats from the followers of the notorious criminal, Jackson Storm. They think they’ll be safe in Hawaii, but distance can’t stop … stop these killers. Not even a tsunami can. This monstrous wave is the most devastating disaster Beth has ever faced. It leaves her beaten, frightened. Is she a widow on her honeymoon? As she struggles to hold herself together and find Donovan, she’s kidnapped by Jackson’s men. Fearing her dead, Donovan searches the rubble and shelters with no luck. The thought of her being swept out to sea is almost too much for him to bear, but the reality is much worse. She’s being used as bait to get him to fall into a deadly trap. If they live through this disaster, they may never be the same again.

Disaster stalks Donovan and Beth once again in this third book in the Disaster Crimes series. While each book is a stand alone, the characters are the same and some story threads continue throughout the different books. While on honeymoon the two lovers become separated when a tsunami strikes the Hawaiian island they are on. Not only do they have to fight to survive the raging water and try to locate one another, but they also have to evade the bad guys that are hunting them. The tsunami and its aftermath were well described and absorbing and I liked the relationships formed, but it did seem a little far fetched that on an island decimated by a tidal wave, the bad guys would be unscathed and still chasing the protagonists. The narrator of the audiobook did a good job of distinguishing the characters and showing the fear, loss and romance in this story. It is an enjoyable, action packed disaster romance that is a bit far fetched in parts but it has likeable characters and is still very entertaining.
Tsunami Crimes by Chrys Fey is a book that grabs the reader right from the start and doesn’t let go until the dramatic end. Apparently part of a series, this is the first book that I have read (listened to) by this author and I don’t feel like I was lost; the author does a good job of filling in any pertinent past details that the reader may need to know. Lots of action, beautiful descriptions of scenes, strong characters and an exciting plot make for a good book and this has lots of them all. With the descriptions of the beauty of Hawaii, I was really looking forward to my up and coming trip there in a few weeks and then came the tsunami…maybe I’ll stay home! So realistic and heartbreaking. Never having been surfing, I enjoyed the scenes where the characters were riding the waves…sounds like fun but I’ll probably stick to wading! I listened to a complimentary copy of the audiobook and the narrator, Bill Nevitt, does a great job telling the story, making for an enjoyable listening experience.
And because many of the books I read and review are in the Christian fiction genre, I will just put a caution here that this book is at least a PG-13 rating, due to language and intimacy details.
This review is for the audio book.
I listened to book two and wanted to find out what happened next in the story so gave this book ago. Glad I did because I liked the book two but enjoyed this book a lot more. There was less sex scenes than the second book which was what made me give it only a three star. It is the natural disasters that I find so interesting in this series, it is so well written that the story sucks you in. The story contains very strong characters that are developing nicely with each book. I did need a tissue because certain parts of the story tugs at the heart strings. Can’t wait to start the next book.
Beth and Donovan are preparing for there big day but with crank phone calls and someone trying to run Beth off the road, Beth is worried that there wedding day might not be the happy occasion she dreamt of. Donovan visits the man behind the intimidation in jail, only to find out that he has put targets on both there backs. The couple go through with the wedding and hope that a month away on there honeymoon means that the hired hit men won’t be able to find them and the police would have plenty of time to round them all up. A few men track them to Hawaii and are about to take them out when a Tsunami hits the island. The warning system failed and many residents and tourist are affected. Can the couple keep there head above water?
Bill Nevitt is a very talented narrator and a great choice as the reader. He does a very good job expressing the emotion and he takes you on a roller coaster of a ride with this book.
action-adventure, romantic, suspense, mystery, thriller, strong-women
Yes, each book is an installment, but that’s a good thing because it would be too overwhelming to have all that in one book. And that’s even without the natural disasters along the way! This time they get married and go to Hawaii for a surfing honeymoon but things get too exciting when they are followed by the criminals and nearly wiped out by the tsunami. I loved it! It’s a real adrenaline rush.
Bill Nevitt really knows how to ramp up the tension with his narration!
This is my favorite installment in this series, so far. It’s the first time I’ve applied a 5-star rating to this entertaining series. Things get a bit crazy, I mean crazier than usual, and the reader is left wondering, really for the first time, if the heroes will be okay in the end.
I feel like this installment went back a bit and decided to clean or clear up anything that might have been unsaid, misunderstood, or downplayed in the past and put it all front and center. In this installment, matters will be resolved, whether we like the way it happens or not.
This book made me appreciate Beth more than I ever have in the past. She rewrites the strong female character to fit her, the way she wants it to be (sexy, vulnerable, strong, smart, and everything else). Donovan isn’t too bad either. I feel like he grows up a bit in this story, even though you didn’t think he needed any more growing-up.
I think that in this installment, there is a bit of a role-reversal (may or may not be intentional) from what our couple experiences during the earthquake. In this installment, we get to see Beth save lives and be a leader in the face of disaster. Even when she’s put in a situation that requires someone to save her, she helps them get to her. Beth is the clear hero of this story and I love it.
Yes, there is a wedding in there somewhere and it was lovely, but the conflict in this story is overpowering. You can’t walk away from this book and not remember the conflict, the car chases, the prostitutes, the deadly water, the sadness and loss, and so much more. I would be content for this series to end here, but I know there’s more. Looking forward to the next one.
Highly recommended to series fans and adult readers of crime thrillers and romantic suspense.
I was given a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review, which has in no way affected the rating and review I’ve applied.
Once again, Chrys Fey takes us on a wild ride with Beth and Donovan. Donovan’s knack for finding trouble or having it follow him, is easily forgiven when he shows us his heroic abilities. He saves himself but of course, he wouldn’t let any harm come to Beth. I think this one was even better than the last Disaster Crimes. Fey has a wonderful ability to mix romance with action that always leaves me feeling satisfied.
Beth and Donovan are engaged and have a wonderful honeymoon in Hawaii planned. However, it seems that disaster follows this couple! After meeting during a Hurricane, then surviving an earthquake, will a tsunami be the end of their HEA? Or, will their part in capturing the infamous criminal Jackson Storm be their undoing?
The story was pretty good, but verged on the edge of believability. Beth becomes a female MacGyver at times and the couple’s involvement with their Police friend Thorne was confusing to me. How do two civilians like Beth and Donovan become his go-to for capturing violent criminals? Also, the fact that Storm’s men are able to carry out a kidnapping during a tsunami was a stretch for me.
There were several steamy sex scenes (of course, they are on a honeymoon!) that might be a downside for some listeners. Personally, I would rather read these types of scenes (if I so desire) rather than have them read to me (without warning where others can hear).
Mr. Nevitt does his usual great job in the narration. His voice for Beth was a little forced, but that seems to be the norm for male narrators trying to sound like females.
All in all, a pretty good listen if you enjoy romantic suspense and can remove your believability factor.
