Hi, I’m Alexis Delaney. I’m your average 17-year-old girl. Except I can see the dead. And talk to the dead. And push them away and, well, help them move on. So..okay, I’m not your average 17-year-old girl. For years I’ve been struggling to survive the souls still roaming around. The shitheads always seem to find me. Moving from town to town every few months never helped either. More dead just … always find me. But things are changing for me now. I’m moving in with my uncle Rory and cousin Tara. I’m finally going to be able to do normal teenage stuff I’ve been missing out on. Right?
Well, if this one bitch of a ghost could leave me alone on campus that would be great. Especially since I haven’t told my new friends about my abilities. Can you believe this? Five good looking guys practically adopt me on my first day of school, and I still think they’re a bit nuts for it. Now if I can only just keep my life with the dead from mixing with my normal life everything would be great. Yeah…I don’t see that happening either. But I’m going to give it a shot. Who knows? It might work.

Beginning of a great series
Getting through this book was a STRUGGLE and a half! Holy crap! I don’t even remember the last time I had such a hard time! So it’s truly a testament to how much I liked the characters and how cool the plot was that I managed to soldier on and get to the end.
Let me explain.
I’m an avid reader who’s been at it for over 70% my life at this point. On top of that, I’m not a native english speaker. Both of those factors combine to make me extremely observant and nit-picky when it comes to how a book is written. I guess you could go as far as to say I’m a bit of a grammar nazi.
Please, know that I don’t say this lightly but Oh, my God does this book need to undergo some SERIOUS editing. I can’t even remember the last time I came across something this atrocious. It was utter SPAG hell. I even got this urge at times, like an unscratchable itch, to take a red pen and just go to town on this book.
The verbal tenses were ALL OVER THE DAMN PLACE, even switching within the same sentence.
There was a crap-ton of grammar mistakes, especially of the your/you’re, too/to, etc. variety. There was also the apostrophe apocalypse. More times than not they were misused when trying to denote possession. Lots of guy’s vs. guys’ instances and I don’t think I came across a single instance of Miles’ when talking about something linked to that character. Another thing I found incredibly distracting were the multiple occurrences of subject/verb disagreement: single subjects followed by plural verbs as well as the other way around. I also came across plenty of sentences that were missing words.
But I think the worst part, because it was the one that completely threw my reading out of whack, was the appalling use of punctuation signs. There were hundreds of missing commas and periods, and just as many cases of the exact opposite: they were thrown in in places they ABSOLUTELY did not belong. Examples that really stuck out to me were: the lacks of commas when a character was directly addressing another character (think: I’ll see you tomorrow, Lexie or Hey, Ethan, are you okay?), and also how EVERY SINGLE PIECE OF DIALOGUE ENDED WITH A PERIOD! That’s not the proper way of writing dialogue.
And how could I forget one of my biggest pet peeves? The lack of paragraph breaks when the speakers changed. If someone said something and a different character reacted to it, THERE SHOULD’VE BEEN A PARAGRAPH BREAK IN BETWEEN! But, because more often than not there wasn’t, things get so freaking confusing and hard to follow along.
Example:
“You know I didn’t mean it,” he sighed patiently.
vs.
“You know I didn’t mean it.”
He sighed patiently.
Notice how the first example refers to a single person, while the second entails a person reacting to what someone else was saying? (Also, note the use of the different punctuation marks at the end of each piece of dialogue).
The bones were there. The idea was solid. It was a cool concept, full of potential. And that’s why I bumped my review up a whole star. But this book sorely needs exhaustive editing (please start by removing 95% of the descriptions of what every character was wearing each and every day and the pointless minutiae of everyday life) and a few rounds of meticulous proof-reading before it can be anything more than a 2 star rating for me.
This was one of the first Supernatural Reverse Harem Series read. B.L. Brunnemer open my eyes up to hold different Supernatural world with necromance in most books in the past I’ve read that in the past the necromance are the enemy this is a nice change. Second reason, the main character of bad @ss she knows how adjust to new situations, very independent person, and slowly over coming her demons. Third reason, I have group of guy who were very open minded to the supernatural world they brought into how excepting they were with Lexi. How these group of guy are best friend and all have very different personalities how close net they are. Fourth I actually see myself watching the characters thought-out scenes watching the story come unfold. I’am happy to stay just recently got the audio book and I have reread this book so many time, I am one those readers if books really good and put the book down I had know what going to happen next. I happy say I did get the the second.
I had a little bit of a hard time getting into the first part of the book because it writes basically from full day to full day. But I was hooked sometime in the middle of the book. The characters all have stories that you just want to know.
I really enjoyed this book, enough to start the next one straight away.
The writing was good, not too much over-explanation, just enough needed for my imagination to take over.
‘Lexie’ has an unusual power, makes a nice change from the usual, and her 5 best boy-friends want to help her with her abilities. Its nice to see the relationship developing between them and I look forward to how it will continue.
Okay. Simply AMAZING!
This was a great start to this series. I just finished my 4th re-read of TVD and decided it was time for a review.
Lexie has had it tough. An abusive addict for a mom, the tragic death of her father, and the side affects of her abilities. Luckily her uncle takes her in and she gets the chance to meet some amazing, and lets be honest here, attractive guys! I never really got into the whole RH trend until I started this series of books. Now, I simply cannot get enough but none seem to compare to this series. I am truly addicted and cannot wait for the 7th instalment! B.L. Brunnemer you have ruined me for all others, but I still have to find a way to pass the time in between releases.
The beginning to a beautiful series. This is a very worthy read! I love all the characters and their interactions.
Finally got around to reading this book. It’s been on my ‘reading horizon’ for a while and with reading time on my hands and 6 books to chomp my book wormy self through I dove in.
The plot was interesting and gripping and I spent way to much time reading and not sleeping last night because I couldn’t stop reading. Lexie is spunky and sassy and each of the boys is a walking book boyfriend… Ethan, Issac, Asher, miles and Zeke . Each one has their own sad story but their friendship has handed them together to a group of close knit friends. They find their missing puzzle piece in Lexie.
The ultimate in reverse harem…the slowest of slow slow burns in that the lead Lexie spends her time thinking about her boys who are friends and no romance occurs between them other than slight touches. This book focuses solidly on building of friendships between Lexie and the boys and getting to know Lexie’s traumatic life. Whilst battling school and a bitch of a ghost… just your day to day for a 17 year old…
I loved this book and will be continuing with the series.
Lexi is a terrific MC – she has been through a lot and is still healing (physically and mentally) but she is still fierce. I like how the guys are protective of her but also admire her strength and respect her ability to handle herself. Brunnemer has an interesting and original take on necromancy and I look forward to seeing where this series goes 🙂
Slow burn RH
I loved the concept of this book! The author did a great job with the characters and plot development. I’m becoming a huge fan of the RH genre and this series is a fantastic one. Slow burn so don’t expect it to be romantic straight away. Five glittery stars for a promising series!
Great! Wish The Whole series was Kindle Unlimited. Little grammar stuff here and there, but the story is good enough to push you through.
