Truth, Lies, and Second Dates is a sweet and sassy contemporary romance from New York Times bestselling author MaryJanice Davidson. Captain Ava Capp has been flying from her past for a decade. She’d much rather leave it, and her home state, behind forever. But when she finds herself back in Minnesota, against her better judgment, everything goes sideways in a way she never expected it to. M.E. … she never expected it to.
M.E. Dr. Tom Baker has never forgotten Ava and the cold case she ran away from. When she shows up unexpectedly in town, in spite of himself, sparks fly. Which is terrible because he can’t stop his growing attraction to her. Can these two Type-A’s let their guards down and work together to put Ava’s tragic past behind her for good? And keep their hands off each other at the same time?

Oh my God! If you don’t have a sense of humor (or like books with a sense of humor) put the book down and walk away. However, if you DO have a sense of humor you absolutely must read this book! It is beyond funny. Kept me laughing the whole time I was reading it and for days after! If you are a sarcasm fan definitely put this one on the top of your TBR list. Truthfully a lighthearted, funny read with amazing characters that will have you forgetting reality. Its perfect!
Truth, Lies, and Second Dates by MaryJanice Davidson was a mixed and at times very confusing book. A medical examiner becomes involved with an airline pilot when she is stranded in Minnesota. It just so happens to be the ten year anniversary of her best friends murder. This book has a little bit of everything; computer glitches, healthcare information violations, chIld geniuses, murder, sex, and diverse family dynamics. Would recommend to readers that liked a story with a twisted plot and MaryJanice Davidson fans.
Best book I have read in awhile. Funny, witty, keep reading past bedtime novel that is swift moving and has the best dialog ever. Definitely recommendable!
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
I’m always very happy when an unknown author to me brings a wonderful story to light and kind of catches me off guard in the process.
I’ve never read this author before and I was delighted to just really be super engaged in the story from the get-go. I read 3/4 of the book on the first day. I kept sneaking in a chapter or two even while I was supposed to be doing other things. That’s certainly an earmark of a great story.
I love that the characters are intelligent and a bit wise to the world. There’s not a lot of gameplaying and I find I enjoy that more and more in books today.
This one has to do with a cold case murder and the renewed search for “Who Dun It”. It is a very unique plot that’s intertwined throughout the book. You just become invested in the characters and the outcome. Great twist at the end too!
The character development is awesome. Davidson really elevated the story with her fun characters by showcasing their intelligence, and quirky, wacky ways that she built into each one of them. They’re very unique and definitely not boring. Plus, you get a bit of snark (yay) with delightful humor and wit throughout.
I have to say I was surprised by this story and definitely thrilled that I enjoyed it as much as I did. Truth, Lies, and Second Dates is an atypical murder mystery sorta romance (huh?) that begs you to keep turning those pages while cheering on the unexpected and definitely atypical boyfriend material!
Fun, weird, and nerdy. Awesome!
Truth, Lies, and Second Dates is more of a contemporary rom-com than a romantic suspense story.
Ava Capp pilot for Northwest Southeast Airlines (they fly everywhere) she enjoys flying in somewhat friendly skies, no roots, no commitments, just hook-ups, and no second dates.
Thomas Baker, MD, Medical Examiner in Minnesota, assists Ava with getting Dennis Monahan, her dead best friend’s brother back to his hotel, after the ten-year memorial of his twin sisters’ unsolved murder.
There is a lot going on in this story, while some are over-explained by the author, other notes are simply pointing out tropes and footnotes along the way. While this might be helpful for some books this was just overkilled in my honest opinion. I found it a struggle to move past certain parts of the book, they were just boring while some lines were funny, others were just so-so. I really wanted to like this book more than I did.
This was the first book that I have read by this author and the well rounded characters kept me totally engaged with the good storyline and I look forward to reading more from this author!
What a ride! Loved this sassy, snarky, turn around romance. The humor abounds, in spite of the stalking, evil murderer, who throws In wrenches and anything else possible to muck up our heroine’s life. Awesome, fun laugh out loud fun, with a side of steam. Don’t miss this one.
Captain Ava Capp is happy flying planes and is known for her heroic landing of a plane. Her best friend was murdered when the girls were in high school. Ava returns to Minneapolis and attends the memorial for Danielle. Danielle’s murder is still unsolved.
The story just did not hold my interest as I kept reading and it fell flat.

Truth, Lies, and Second Dates by MaryJanice Davidson is a fun, quirky, sassy, and enjoyable book that is part contemporary romance part mystery.
I enjoyed reading the interactions and relationship with Ava Capp and Tom Baker. Their characters were both realistic and imperfect, but yet like able. I loved the banter, sarcasm, and witty commentary the most. Quick one-liners that were dispensed throughout made me literally laugh out loud several times. The plot and pacing were quick, light, and satisfying and I was easily able to devour this book in two days.
A great book for anyone looking for a light read, humor and a little romance and mystery.
5/5 stars
Thank you NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC and in return I am submitting my unbiased and voluntary review and opinion.
Truth, Lies, and Second Dates is an extremely witty novel that is refreshingly self-aware. MaryJanice Davidson adeptly navigates through tropes while simultaneously embracing and subverting them.
Captain Ava Capp is perfectly happy flying commercial planes through the friendly skies. No roots, and definitely no commitments. Is she running away from the losses of her past? Maybe. Is she slightly emotionally closed off? Probably. All that aside, this pilot is about to be thrown back into her past troubles when she is unexpectedly grounded in her hometown. Add in Dr. Tom Baker, the medical examiner who is as hot as he is brainy? Things are about to get really interesting.
This is the first Davidson novel that I’ve read, and I was blown away by how incredible her dialogue writing is. It’s sharp, fast-paced, and thoroughly witty from beginning to end. It was honestly a joy to read. As I mentioned earlier, the writing in this book is wholly self-aware; in many ways, it’s an homage to the romance and thriller genres. Told in close third person, there are a couple of moments in the narrative where the viewpoint shifts abruptly, but said moments don’t have an injurious effect on the overall story. Ava is a strong, flawed protagonist who is fascinating to read. Tom is a refreshingly unique character who defies a lot of expected romantic stereotypes in the best ways. The supporting characters are also all entertaining and delightful to read.
Truth, Lies, and Second Dates is funny, witty, and well written. A definite must for your TBR stack.
