A murdered mistress. An accused mob boss. Can two detectives put their differences aside to find the real killer?
Angelina Bonaparte is starting from square one. After a messy divorce, the middle-aged librarian put down her books and picked up a new gig as a private investigator. When a mob boss heads to jail for his mistress’ murder, she has no issue with the womanizing scumbag rotting in … scumbag rotting in prison. But when the suspect’s pregnant wife swears his innocence, Angelina can’t find it in her heart to refuse the case.
Already reluctant to get involved, her frustration grows when she’s forced to work alongside Ted Wukowski, a homicide detective who thinks a crime scene is no place for a woman. In the search for clues along the mistress’ long record of broken hearts and promises, Angelina’s natural charm is the perfect complement to her temporary partner’s take-no-prisoners interrogation style. And before long, she and Ted can feel their grudging respect transform into an undeniable attraction.
To solve the case and catch the murderer, the PI and the cop must learn to trust each other completely before an innocent man goes to jail for a crime he didn’t commit…

This was the first of a three book series by Nanci Rathbun that I hope will become many more. I sped through them in two days. Don’t let the gory covers (that should be redone) fool you. The stories have a similar tone to Sue Grafton’s, except I liked these even more. An attractive, fit older heroine, who’s a clotheshorse and struggles with some older women issues. (Yay, younger men!) Angelina is part of a close-knit family (although with mafia connections) so included are three grandchildren and missing (yay) is the nagging or difficult mother.
Throw in mystery, action, some romance, interesting characters and plot, and you have a series worth reading.
I like to listen to audiobooks like this about older women who are starting over after a bad divorce or other circumstances and show that they are good at what they can do and this is a story that has it plus just a little humor but mostly Angelina has what it takes to get the job done as a Private Investigator finding out who murdered Anthony Belloni’s mistress and clear his name. Angelina also confronts her demons along in a world filled with injustice and lies.
This is a wonderful novel. The characters are so well developed and engaging. There is enough conflict and testy interaction and it is nicely balanced by the friendly interaction and friendship. The suspense factor is difficult to explain yet I was grabbed and engrossed early in the novel. The suspense and many twists involved make this a great read. I am hooked on this series and have added Nanci Rathbun to my TBR authour list
Great mystery keeps you wanting to read on to the very end.
The first of her books I have read and I really enjoyed it. Immediately went to the second in the series.
I enjoyed this mystery written by Nanci Rathbun and narrated by Kieran Calland Metts. Both the author and narrator were new to me and I thought they both did a fantastic job. I look forward to listening to more of their works.
I was given this free review copy audiobook at my request and I have voluntarily left this review.
Pretty well written with a very likeable character. A pleasant way to spend an afternoon or two. I am making a note to read the next book in the series to see if I want to get further invested.
Absolutely outstanding. The humor is belly-laugh funny!
Not your usual interaction. Strong characters. I was pretty sure who was the killer, but it was well crafted.
A good start for a series. Older woman, but not your typical granny. The mystery was ok. The characters rather fun.
Angelina Bonaparte, divorced at age fifty, a mother and grandmother, owns her own private investigation agency. Despite her edgy spiked hair and sexy Miata, Angie generally works on divorce cases or cases of financial fraud. In fact, she is helping Marci gather evidence against a philandering husband when he is arrested for the murder of his mistress. The characters in this book are delightful but also realistic. Angie is searching for a true lover without much success. She sincerely likes people and cooperates with the police. A lapse Catholic, Angie has a strong moral compass and compassionate heart. The dialogue is often witty, and the plot is fast-paced and well crafted. Rathburn is one of the best mystery Authors I’ve read in a lomg time.
First time author for me. The mystery was well done. There was some snark, a little bit of a thriller and enjoyable book. Angelina is a strong woman, taking life back after her jerk husband cheated o her, she is taking names and kicking ass. The narrator was ok, took awhile to get use to her. Onto book 2 🙂
Truth Kills, my first read from author Nanci Rathbun. I originally got this book back in December of 2018 & one thing lead to another and I never got around to reading it until now. Now I’ve been given an Audible copy of this book & am voluntarily reviewing it and since I own both the Audible & Kindle editions I was able to follow along while being read to. Kieren Calland Metts’s talented narration adds to the well-written book’s enjoyment. Extremely well written, the characters, even the minor ones, are well developed with an attention-grabbing storyline. I’m a character reader, I get into the characters. Who and what they are. Why they do the things they do. The things that make the reader get invested into the characters and thereby the story. I’ll be reading more from this author! Better yet this is the first book in a multi-book series that I look forward to reading. Next up is Cash Kills. I received this audiobook at no-cost from Audiobookworm Promotions. The gifting of this audiobook did not affect my opinion of it.(RIP Marley January 20, 2014 – July 24, 2018).
This was a great book! Can’t wait to read more from the series. Perfect mixture of humor and action.
I like a mystery and this one also has a little humor. The characters are believable and Angie is tough!
Easy read. Entertaining
The heroine of this novel is very engaging. The plot is somewhat formulaic, but that is the type of book it is. The pacing is very good, as is the writing. I would recommend this book for a light read. I also would suggest that if the reader finds this engaging, the rest of the series is worth a look.
I loved the characters in this book. Great writing, very engaging book that kept me hooked.
I have read all three (that I’ve found) of this series, and I LOVE them. Highly recommend. Good writing, edited well so it’s not annoying to read from a word-use or punctuation perspective, either, which is uncommon these days! Good story lines, and she develops interesting characters in each book, some of whom become regulars in the other books in the series. I look forward to more of this series from this author!
I really enjoyed it! I’m looking forward to reading more by this author!
