I was luck enough to get an advanced copy of TRUST NO ONE and this is what I said:
“A wild, twisting crime thriller filled with secrets, betrayals, and complex characters that will keep you up until you reach the last darkly satisfying page. A five star beginning to Debra Webb’s explosive series!” ~ Allison Brennan, New York Times Bestselling Author
Murder, missing persons, arson and a cold case all lead to a thrilling story to read. Exciting beginning to Debra Webb’s new series.
Detective Kerry Devlin of the Birmingham Police Department got a new partner. Her former partner retired so now she is being saddled with Detective Falco whose reputation for recklessness and not exactly doing everything by the book preceded him. Kerri is not happy about this at all. No sooner had they met each other when they got a call about a double homicide and missing pregnant woman. They rushed to the scene and found billionaire software guru Ben Abbott shot dead in his bed and Abbott’s mother-in-law shot dead in the nursery. Ben Abbott’s wife Sela Rollins Abbott was nowhere to be found. There was no sign of the murder weapon. The house had been ransacked. They didn’t have much to go on but were anxious to get started and prioritized finding the missing pregnant woman. Was she a victim or a killer?
In addition to the stress of this case Kerri was dealing with stress at home. After discovering her husband had been cheating on her she divorced him. The divorce was tough on their thirteen-year-old daughter Tori. Kerri had full custody of Tori. Kerri and Tori weren’t seeing eye to eye on the full summer visit to her father’s new home in New York City where he is living with the woman with whom he cheated which Kerri’s ex-husband had requested. Teen hormones and the divorce were making for lots of tension at home.
Trust No One by Debra Webb is the first book in her Devlin & Falco series. This book has a very complex storyline. I remember as I was reading, since I was so immersed in the story, that I couldn’t imagine being in Kerri’s and Falco’s shoes having to solve the case. Kerri and Falco were chasing all over town interviewing the people they suspected were involved in the case. I liked how these two learned to respect each other and had each other’s back. Kerri learned that Falco really was a darn good detective and didn’t deserve the reputation he had. Falco learned that Kerri could sometimes ignore the rules. Together they make a perfect team. With all the action and suspense in this book I found myself really looking forward to the crime being solved. Ms. Webb did a great job keeping me entertained and very interested.
An intricate story of love, loss and revenge. Detective Kerri Devlin has been assigned a new partner, Detective Luke Falco. She is not thrilled with training a new detective, especially when their first case is a double homicide. A man and his mother-in-law have been murdered while the man’s pregnant wife is missing. Is she really missing or is she the killer? In addition to her current case, she is a divorced single mother of a teenage girl who is not dealing well with the divorce. As the investigation proceeds, many questions arise about the Birmingham elite and what part they might play in a missing person cold case from fifteen years ago. When Kerri has to make a life or death decision, how will her actions affect her daughter, her family and her career? I received an advance review copy at no cost and without obligation for an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
The book was entertaining as a whole. However, there were some pretty massive plot holes left at the end. I would have liked a better explanation to tie these up. I did enjoy the development of the relationship between Falco and Devlin. I would give the series another try.
This tangled web of lies and deceit will keep you guessing from start until finish! Debra Webb weaves a story filled with relatable family, crimes of passion and edge of your seats suspense like no other! Devlin and Falco are an attention grabbing duo!
Loved Devlin and Falco. They make a great partners in law inforcement.
The story has a lot of different turns and is very sad at times.
Look forward to reading more about Devlin and Falco!
This book started out with a bang. From there it dragged along setting up the back story. There were a lot of characters in this book, almost too many for me to keep straight. The last few chapters were intense and thrilling.
Looking forward to their next case
Well-written story with great characters, fast paced and really interesting made this book a page turner. Action filled from the start, it doesn’t let up and it was impossible to put the book down. Great first book to a promising new series.
I received a complimentary digital copy of this book from NetGalley and the publisher in exchange for an unbiased review.
“What the eye doesn’t see, the heart doesn’t grieve…”
The book begins with an active scene where Detective Kerri Devlin just killed an unknown man in a struggle with her gun. She crashes her car on the way to meet her partner Detective Luke Falco on the scene of a double homicide. Kerri is divorced from Nicholas Jackman who lives in NYC and shares custody of their 13 year old daughter Victoria “Tori” in Birmingham.
The story proceeds by going back 10 days to provide the events leading up to the fatal struggle over her gun. Kerri works for Major Dontrelle Brooks in the Major Investigations Division of the Birmingham Police Department. Her partner of 7 years Trent Boswell has recently retired and isn’t thrilled with being paired with a new transfer with questionable work ethics. When they are assigned to a double homicide involving some of the towns most influential people, she learns to rely and trust her new partner more than she could have imagined. They try to unravel the mystery regarding the deaths of 40 year old Benjamin Abbott and his 70 year old mother-in-law, Jacqueline Rollins. It appeared that they were shot to death but Ben’s wife 28 year old Sela Rollins Abbott is 30 weeks pregnant and missing.
Ben Abbott’s father Daniel Abbott takes pride in the fact his ancestors founded Birmingham. The story becomes complicated as the cast of characters are revealed each with his and her own secrets including Detective Devlin. While emmeshed in solving this case she comes to realize that the stakes are high when her sister Diana’s family is somehow involved. No one can be trusted to tell the truth which leads the investigation in circles. Wealthy, influential people often feel they are above the law and it’s consequences as they go to extremes to protect and conceal secrets which would lead to the demise of their reputation and fortune.
Thus is the first book in a new series by this author and one not to be missed. The story continues in Gone Too Far (Devlin & Falco, book 2) due to be published 4/27/2021.
4.5/5
Wow, what a ride!! This is the beginning of a police procedural series.
New partners Devlin and Falco are Birmingham, AL (2 hrs. from me!) detectives who are investigating a double homicide with links to a 15 year-old disappearance involving the rich and powerful of the city. There’s revenge, villains and twists aplenty. Reminded me a bit of Gone Girl.
Really enjoyed and looking forward to more from this author.
One of the best books I’ve read this year. I didn’t want to stop reading because I wanted to figure out what was going on.
A very enjoyable, fast paced murder mystery with a twisted plot and good characters. I know this is just the beginning for this author and my TBR pile!
This is an intense and emotional thrill for a whodunnit! Well written with wonderful characters. MC Detective Kerri Devlin is working on a double homicide case while going through some heavy personal issues at home. How does she keep it together?! There are a few twists, a bit predictable too but overall suspenseful. Thank you to Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for an ebook ARC. This is my honest review.
I received a free electronic copy of this Who-Done-It from AmazonFirstReads for July 2020, the author Debra Webb, and the publisher Thomas&Mercer. Thank you all for sharing your hard work with me. I have read this novel of my own volition, and this review reflects my honest opinion of this work. Trust No One is the first novel in a series about detectives Devlin & and her new partner, Falco. Both this novel and sequel Gone Too Far are available on Kindle Unlimited.
I am happy to add Debra Webb to my must-read authors. She writes a tight tale with personable protagonists, amid the picturesque, well-covered background of Birmingham, AL. Though covering only a period of ten days, the plot is deeply buried among old family secrets and well-to-do bad guys who think they can buy their way out of anything. Detectives Devlin & Falco do their best to prove them wrong. And lawyers. Lots of lawyers in the plot! I became very invested in Kerri’s story very near the beginning of this novel. The author has a back trail of 150 novels – I can be happy for a long time in her novels. So glad I found her~! Thank you, Amazon for the intro.
Trust No One by Debra Webb is a non-stop thriller! I am very impressed with the thought, planning, and strategy the anonymous narrator had put into place to achieve her end game. The opening chapter has heart-stopping action for Detective Kerri Devlin. I love that the setting is so familiar to me in Mountainbrook/Birmingham, Alabama. As I finished this first chapter I could not determine how Devlin would be able to explain this shooting and retain her freedom.
Devlin is given a new partner, Detective Luke Falco, who had been working deep undercover for years. She feels he is an irresponsible detective and is reluctant to work with him. They are called to the home of Ben Abbott who has been murdered in his sleep, his pregnant wife is missing, and her mother was killed trying to hide in the nursery. In the city of Birmingham, Alabama, the Abbotts are among the most influential residents. Soon Devlin and Falco will be investigating not only the Abbott family but also the Thompsons and law firms associated with the families.
Devlin is having problems with her daughter Victoria and her ex-husband, Nick. The case takes an unexpected turn as Devlin’s sister Diana, her niece Amelia, and their family friend Jan are all entangled into this investigation. The results for one of these family members is very upsetting!
I loved this book! I will be reading more by author Debra Webb and hope there is more with Devlin and Falco in the future.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Thank you NetGalley & the publisher for gifting me a copy of those book. This review is my own.
4.5/5 Stars
Wow. That is my first thought as I closed the the “cover” on this one. Trust No One is a suspenseful murder mystery involving the elite of Birmingham. As we dive into this story, we’re lead on a wild goose chase; each answer solved just reveals two more questions. Nothing in Birmingham is quite as it initially seems. This is a tangled web of secrets, including even Detective Devlin’s own family.
I really enjoyed the foreshadowing right at the start. You KNOW something is going to happen and it keeps you on the edge of your seat as you try to figure out HOW it’ll happen. I also really enjoyed the additional POV from the victim/suspect, it added an extra level of suspense and mystery.
My only complaint about the book was the ending. I closed the book with some unanswered questions and wish that we had been given a bit more into what REALLY transpired. With that said, I have a feeling that it was done that way intentionally.
This book is available FREE on KindleUnlimited right now. I highly recommend checking it out!
Great start to a new series! Looking forward to the next book.
Well, this book was certainly a pleasant surprise! I’ve never read a Debra Webb book before, so I didn’t know what to expect. The book is billed as the double homicide of Daniel Webb and his mother-in-law, and the disappearance of his pregnant wife Sela. The investigation is led by harried Detective Kerri Devlin whose former partner and mentor has retired, and now she’s been saddled with a new partner, rebel Detective Luke Falco. The pressure is great to solve this case and to make matters worse, her manipulative ex-husband wants custody of their thirteen-year-old daughter Tori.
The suspects begin to pile up, including a number of high-profile local citizens who have many secrets to protect. In addition, her own niece Amelia goes missing and it seems she is attached to the case as well. As the case intensifies, Devlin must decide who to trust. Will her new partner prove to be trustworthy?
The first part of this book was a slow build, mostly character building, and there were a lot of characters, so many that I had trouble keeping them straight at times. Around the halfway mark it really picked up the pace and I was hooked up until the climatic end. I will be checking out her backlist for sure. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book. I gave it four stars.
Start with a double murder, have a new partner no one wants, your ex is trying to take your daughter and you might have killed someone. Just a day in the life of homicide Detective Kerri Devlin. There was a lot going on in this book, multiple povs that at times were too much for my tiny brain, but the twists, the turns in the plot were top notch. Kerri and Falco made a great duo and I hope to see more of them. Thank you Debra Webb. Thomas and Mercer and Netgalley for the arc. I freely volunteer my thoughts and opinions.
TRUST NO-ONE…….Debra Webb
Detective Kerri Devlin Is teamed with Falco, her job now was to properly orientate him. From his wardrobe, to hair, he had been undercover
They have multi murders with connections to the elite people and their secrets, political, and coverups. They learned to work together and formed a good team. She questions her ex wanting their daughter for the summer. He had a great condo, views of the city in New York and the girlfriend.
Good beginning to this new series, they always have a lot of depth, action and enjoyable. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion by Net Galley and Thomas & Mercer
