WOW!!! What an amazing read by Kylie Scott. Trust is so different from her other books and I loved that she ventured out into something new.
Trust is a standalone Young Adult novel that borders on Mature YA. I personally don’t think a reader under the age of say 15 or 16 should read this book because is does have some sexual content but it also has drug and alcohol content in it. But this is a book for any high school aged reader and anyone who is a fan of a Young Adult story.
This has to be one of my all time favorite YA novels. I loved the storyline and that the characters and everything just felt “real” to me. I felt everything both Edie and John felt. This book does also touch on the topic of bullying in school and the effects it has on a person. It breaks my heart reading stories with this subject because I know first hand that Bullying still exists in schools these days.
What I loved the most about this book were the characters Kylie gave us. Both Edie and John were great. Like I said before my heart broke for Edie, because she wasn’t the typical heroine we read about. She wasn’t stick thin and popular, which lead to her being bullied. But what I loved was the transformation we saw in her as the story progressed. And some of that was due to the budding friendship with John. John was your typical bad boy who made some bad decisions, but is now trying to change things around. He realized that there are more important things in life. I loved that he was Edie’s voice of reason. These two relationship just felt real and deep to me. I loved that it spans over the course of the book and wasn’t your insta-love type thing.
I really liked Hang and Anders as well. Hang befriends Edie when she moves to the public school. She introduces Edie to Sophia and Carrie and they all except her with open arms. I loved the friendship between these girls. The banter was witty and fun to read. As for Anders, he is John’s best friend, I loved his quick wit and charm. You can’t help but fall in love with him too. He was a loyal friend.
Now I will say that, YES, this book does have some of the normal high school angst and drama that we normally see in a YA novel, but trust me it worked in this story and it wasn’t overwhelming and didn’t commence any eye rolling. This story was so much more than that!!!!
My only real complaint about this book was that I wish it was told in Dual POV. This book was solely from Edie’s POV and there were some times during the story I wish we would’ve gotten John’s POV to know what he was thinking and feeling about certain things. Now saying that, being in one POV didn’t reduce my enjoyment of this book. I was enthralled all the way through.
I would 100% recommend this book to anyone who is a fan of a YA novel. Also if you are a fan of Kylie’s other books, I really think you should take a chance on this book and seeing a different side Kylie. I truly hope she writes more YA novels in the future.
Where can I even begin?! I don’t know where to start but I guess the beginning is good lol!
First let me say I was already hearing so many good things about this book but the trailer really is what convinced me to buy it!
Instantly Kylie’s words caught my attention, it started off with a bang! So much happened and my heart was racing. I was scared and in shock and excited, I didn’t know where it was going but I knew it was going to be good!
I loved Edie she was so relatable! There was many times when I thought wow this is like someone wrote me into a book!! Her character was written so well, she was likeable and witty! I loved her sass! After the incident she was so care free and basically didn’t give a shit, I wish I was more like that sometimes! The fact that she was strong and thought for herself was a huge plus, I never saw any weakness in her. The relationship between Edie and her mother was awesome. They had a strong bond. Her mother also reminded me off mine! Overprotective to the point of annoying but so loving, caring and kind.
John was everything! His character was so deep and I don’t how to explain it but all I can think of is murky water LOL!! Even though I loved him and connected with his character I longed to get to know him more. I feel as though if there where some chapters in his PoV I would feel differently. That being said he was still a brilliant character.
John and Edie together were perfect. The loud mouth and the brooder! Total opposites. The stoner and the good girl. Both so much more than their labels. Both so much more together. They made each other better than they were before. Often while reading romance I feel like the characters don’t actually know each other. Can anyone relate? Yes the guy is hot and sexy and those alpha vibes have the panties coming of in seconds but do these people actually know one another? John and Edie spent time together talking and building a foundation and it was refreshing. Late night study sessions and jumping into black water at night… Just being.
Secondary characters can either be the type that stand out almost as much as the hero and heroine or they can be white noise in the background. Anders and Hang were the former. Anders brought the laughs and Hang was that awesome friend who was down for whatever! Both loyal and hella cool!
So many moments that’s had me laughing super hard and smiling like a lunatic. Don’t miss out on the wild crazy ride!
Loved this YA romance so much. This is my first book by Kylie Scott and I was pleasantly surprised! The woman is freaking talented. Trust is 100% going on my list of favourites in 2017.
This is an incredible must-read YA! Trust took me on an amazing journey, one that was fearless, authentic, and romantic. I loved that Kylie Scott wrote about characters with real life insecurities. I enjoy a strong heroine, one that is flawed and not so perfect. The hero was both sexy and strong, but bad enough that you’ll get all the feels! I was held captive throughout the entire story!
I really loved this book from start to finish!!!
I loved this book! It’s so much more than you’d expect- it’s sweet and has some really fun moments, but it’s also surprisingly real and at times quite intense. Edie is such a terrific character, she’s definitely very relatable. And John is wonderful. So very different from each other, but after going through what they did together, a bond was formed between them that just kept getting stronger. I really loved the progression of their relationship.
This is one of those books, even with some of the events that took place in it, left me with such a warm, happy feeling.
I don’t get to read as many new books as I’d like to, usually rereading my favorites for an easy read. Twist was my first new read of the year and boy did it blow me away. I love Kylie Scott’s Stage Dive series. I think I may have liked Twist more. And that’s saying something.
I just realized it has been a while since I read from Kylie Scott. ‘Stage Dive’ is one of my favorite series. It was my first rocker series and I think I will be re-reading the series soon As for the ‘Trust’, Kylie Scott didn’t disappoint, it was a great read and I couldn’t put it down till I was done.
John Cole is our swoon worthy hero He is sweet, handsome, and loyal with a bad boy exterior. His life made me sad, angry and broke my heart. Our heroine is Edith Millen, a.k.a Edie. She is strong and smart but insecure. Even though their lives are completely different, they are both damaged and vulnerable characters. I know you are wondering if their lives are completely different how did they meet? They meet at a local convenience store when they were both being held as hostages during a robbery, which changes their lives. Being 17 years old and facing death changes Edie’s attitude and perspective about life. Edie is a victim of bullying at her private school and after facing death she decides to take control and stand for herself. After her best friends betrayal and not wanting to be a victim of bullying anymore, she decides to transfer to the public high school. What she doesn’t expect is to cross paths with the boy who risked his life to save hers during the robbery. Just like Edie, John’s perspective and expectations of life changes. He decides to change his lifestyle and stop partying and dealing drugs with his brother and start thinking about his future.
After the night of robbery, both Edie and John’s life and character changed. And most people around them even the closest ones cannot understand what is going on. However, both Edie and John can understand and relate to each other because have been through the same things. This understanding starts their friendship and helps their special bond to grow stronger. I loved the way Edie and John’s relationship evolved and they shared a lot of firsts together. Their banter is funny and cute.Hang, Sophia, Carrie and Anders, who are closest friends of Edie and John, are also great. I am hoping maybe we will get a book for Hang and Anders
‘Trust’ is sweet, swoony, little bit nerve wracking, and hopeful book that you won’t be able put it down until you are done.
Would I recommend this book: Yes
Would I re-read this book: Yes
Would I read future books by this author: Yes
4.5 ’s
I saw the trailer of this book in the author’s FB page and was so fascinated I quickly added this book to my TBR. It wasn’t sitting there too long, I wanted to read it asap. And I’m glad I did. It was tragic, funny and sweet. It wasn’t overly dramatic on the high school stuff but it was definitely thought provoking on the incidents that seem to happen to them. I loved the way the story took its time for this couple to develop from strangers to friends to lovers.
The first quarter, I couldn’t put it down, and that was hard because I started reading this book at 1am and forced myself to stop at 3am. Once their friendship began, and we got to know more about each of them, I again couldn’t put it down. I connected with Edie on a few levels, but I loved John just as much as I did Edie. It may have taken me a while to discover this amazing book, but I’m smart enough to know this author has other works I should be reading, and I’m on it now.
Holy wow! This book was so intense. It gets started with a bang. Literally. I was on the edge of my seat pretty much the whole time. I don’t usually read YA books, but I really enjoyed this one.
We meet Edie and John as they’re being held hostage in a convenience store. There isn’t much interaction or chemistry at this point between them, which is understandable given the circumstances.
After the incident, Edie decides to leave her private school to attend the local public school instead. She’s tired of the bullies and drama. She hopes to have a fresh start. She soon realizes that John also attends that public school. Things slowly progress from there.
Edie is going down the wrong path, not caring much about anything anymore. In the meantime, John is trying to get back on the right path. God, I adore John. He’s made mistakes in the past and he’s really trying to atone for all those bad choices. He’s loyal and fiercely protective. Where were guys like him when I was in high school? LOL!!! In the long run, they sort of right each other. Their friendship turned relationship is a gradual progression, but it is beautiful none-the-less. They have a connection that no one else understands. It’s certainly a slow-burn, despite the chemistry sizzling between them.
I was a wee bit disappointed with the climax. I was expecting more, but it just kind of happened. IDK. I still really enjoyed the story as a whole despite this.
I loved the secondary characters, most of them at least. LOL!!! I adored Anders. He and Hang are the best kind of friends.
If you like YA books with loads of suspense, intrigue, drama, angst, heartache… That sounds bad. LOL!!! But it’s not, it’s also got some laughs, some steam, and is just a really good story! I’d definitely recommend it.
A touching read!
Being young is all about the experiences: the first time you skip school, the first time you fall in love…the first time someone holds a gun to your head…
A thoughtful, provoking and inspiring read.
Well written. Captivating. Hypnotic. Moving. I only have one word sentences to describe how magnetic, touching and moving it is. That’s all I can say – and sometimes, that’s enough because they are not enough words to describe how this book made me feel.
Full of fear, death, loss, hopelessness, hope, trust, friends, family and love.
Perfect for readers of contemporary romances.
A junk food run to the Drop Shop sees Edie caught in the middle of a hold up that ends in tragedy. Edie’s a good girl. John, one of the boys who rescues her, is a bad boy. The experience turns both their lives around. John gives up his marijuana supply business and goes straight. Edie becomes something of a badass – after all, a bully is nothing compared to a gun in your face. Their relationship develops from understanding to friendship to love, but John’s past threatens to destroy their future.
Kylie Scott’s contemporary romances are savvy and rooted in the reality of the 24/7 fish bowl existence of teens and twenty somethings. Trust is grittier than most of her romances, but also incredibly tender and infused with optimism.
That fateful night when two strangers form a bond in the wake of tragedy … Edie Millen and John Cole are at the wrong place at the wrong time only to find they are the survivors of a convenience store robbery gone terribly bad. When fate intervenes once again the two find themselves at the same High School and forming a friendship that goes places most people could never comprehend. Can a friendship born out of misfortune become a love so strong that its depth is immeasurable?
Kylie Scott, no stranger to inner turmoil and edgy subject matter, does an exceptional job of growing her characters as they emerge from a life-changing event in Trust. In this work her leads manifest sensitivity in different ways but are no less affected by what life has thrown at them. With blunt honesty this author tackled subjects ranging from PTSD, body image, bullying and loneliness as she expressed the multitude of issues her cast were dealing with. Ms. Scott’s joining of Edie and John in blind trust and binding them in earned trust took this story to hard places and left them stronger individually and close to invincible as a couple. The journey taken to process the best and worse in life was conveyed by this author with realism and poise. As the portrayals floundered and dealt with situations that they were not fully equipped for, in different ways, they were able to ground themselves from the chaos with their trust and Edie and John beautifully complimented each other as they found their footing. Kylie Scott’s Trust was a captivating, bare and unforgettable read.
*I was given an advanced copy. All opinions expressed are my own.*
Wow! I loved everything about this book. It’s so realistic!
Holy crap!
I did not think I was going to love this book at all, but it has taken me by complete surprise. I loved Trust. The story, the characters, and the writing were so amazing. Once I really got into the story I was hooked and I never wanted to put this book down.
Edie and John are are two people from very different backgrounds brought together when they are held up in a store at gunpoint by a guy on drugs. The experience has shaken their childlike carefree view of the world and was a big slab in the face that even though your young, you are no invincible. For Edie, she deals with the trauma by realizing that life is too short and decides to no longer take anyone’s shit and starts down a sort of destructive and living more on the wild side. John, on the other hand stops doing illegal things and starts to take school more seriously and takes a good look at what his future may hold.
Edie gravitates towards John because the trauma of what happened affects them in similar ways. They depend on each other for comfort and friendship because only they know how each other feels. I have to say I really loved how their friendship formed. While John has a bad rep surrounding him, he was truly a sweet guy who cared a lot about those he considered important to him. He was always there for Edie no matter what. He helped to ground her and kept her from making huge mistakes and doing wrong things that would not only affect her, but him as a direct as well. John was exactly what she needed.
Let me say that the romance that forms between John and Edie was so perfect and done so well. It was almost a slow burn that slowly escalated. It was clear Edie has the hots for John, but she never acted on him due her to own insecurities about her weight, image, and the fact that John had gotten around. She acted up over it and made the most out of being friends with him and I loved that. But there are little moments where it was clear John was catching feelings for Edie and it made me so giddy. Some scenes between them was so very hot and heavy without being too sexy since these characters are in high school. But damn once they acknowledged their feelings for one another and didn’t get anything come between them, they were a united front. I looveed them together. John is so sweet and Edie’s shyness was cute and real.
The other thing I loved was the friendships Edie formed when she switched schools and I have to say any scene with Edie and Hang together was like the best bestie duo ever. Hang was a real ride or die and she was the sweetest friend. I also loved Sander who was a huge contradiction, but a good friend to both John and Edie. So not only were the main characters lovable, but the side characters were kickass as well.
In short Trust was fucking amazing. I loved it from cover to end. Do not sleep on this book. Its not really what I would consider YA, but for those that like NA will definitely enjoy. This is hands down my favorite book by Kylie Scott. The heroine is kickass with a big heart who had to learn the harsh reality of mortality and the danger of the world far too soon. John is a very swoonworthy hero who will melt your heart as he cleans up his act and becomes everything to and for Edie. It is an all around great book that I loved.
I couldn’t put this book down. I’ve read it multiple times and am pulled into the lives of these characters like it’s a new read each time. You’ve got to read it!
Edie and John are seniors in high school and meet in explosive circumstances. Their lives and priorities will never be the same after facing death.
This was an easy read and I was captivated from the beginning. It’s a realistic view of high school, the cliques, the bullying and other social aspects. But it was all that and so much more. Edie and John were a great couple, totally different people. The friendship moved up a level and I was cheering for them.
Well done Kylie Scott for venturing into the YA world, I loved it.
I LOVE YA Fantasy and Sci-Fi, but when I want a contemporary read, I tend to avoid YA like the plague – all the angst with no…completion? It’s equivalent to literary blue balls to a grown @$$ woman like me. But if all YA was like Trust, my wallet and bookshelves would have a real problem. I DEVOURED this book. From the excitement of the stick up, to the utterly relatable issues Edie dealt with as a female larger than a size zero in our image obsessed society, to John’s struggle to turn a new leaf and improve his life (I found that so admirable), and their burgeoning and evolving relationship – Kylie Scott singlehandedly has made me rethink my stance on the Young Adult Contemporary sub-genre (although, to be honest, I appreciate the “Mature Young Adult” designation Trust carries and the nuances that implies). The plot/story was flawless and the characters – both main and secondary – were so real and well-developed. Plus Edie’s sassy snark and the dialogue throughout the book is so intelligent, humorous, and engaging. I give Trust 4.75 out of 5 stars and I hope that Kylie Scott continues to write books in this fashion. I’ll also have to start her Dive Bar series, because if this is how she writes teens, I can’t wait to see what she does with adults!
I love a good YA and I never read enough of them anymore, but when you get an absolute fantastic story and so well written I just want to dive into this genre headfirst.
Kylie Scott wrote some of my favorite rocker series and when I found out she was doing YA I had to read it and I am so glad I did. Her writing is fantastic and you know that even if you don’t connect she writes a good book.
This book really covered a lot of subjects but the main thing for me was the bullying it so bad at the moment and it was so good read a character like Edies who copped a lot and yes it got her but by the end it was so good to see her fight back and really not care what people thought and I really admired this in her character. Edie had been through a lot and u can understand why she acts like she does but when she becomes friends with a very unlikely guy it really brings out the worse and best in her.
Which brings us to john, he seems like such a messed up kid but really he has a good head on his shoulders but does all the wrong things and is very judged. Then 1 night changes him and when he makes a connection with Edie he wants to become a better person where as Edie didn’t want to be good anymore. John just has this instinct that he needs to look after her and he does become the friend that she relies on.
I absolutely loved this book and thought that it was such a fantastic story, it had it all, chemistry, a bit of violence, I felt like it went into the depths of 2 people dealing together from an event that they will never forget.
This book deserves way more than 5 stars but that’s all I can give and I think that if you love the YA genre you have to read this book and if you don’t read it anyway you won’t be disappointed.
I love love loved this book! I was hesitant at first to read it because it was YA but I love Kylie Scott and took a chance. What an amazing read! Kylie Scott captures the essence of youth, of life, of moments. The first few chapters had me on the edge of my seat!
Edie Millen runs out with her BFF for the always important movie marathon snacks. Her mission is cut short when the “Drop Shop” gets robbed while Edie is in the store.
“There was a gun. A gun. This was happening, right here. Right now.”
The robbery was a heart pounding, gut wrenching, intense situation. An unlikely hero comes to Edie’s rescue, John Cole. Known for being a badass and trouble, John is in the Drop Shot when the robbery occurs. The robbery has a profound effect on both Edie and John.
Edie’s changes were swift and immediate. She faced near death was not going to tolerate the usual nonsense of being picked on and made fun of at the fancy private school she attended. She is trying to deal with the trauma of that night.
“You’re in your senior year Edie. Changing schools right now would be a huge disruption.”
“No, Mom,” ……”Nearly getting killed was a huge disruption. Changing schools would be a relief.”
“New school, new mantra, new me – and I had no fucks to give.”
Meanwhile, at the public school, John Cole is also making some swift changes. Going to class, doing homework and trying to get the teachers to give him a chance and take him seriously.
John and Edie form an amazing bond. They realize that they can help each other heal and deal with the trauma of that night. The story unfolds beautifully. It was real, raw, heart pounding, emotional and FUNNY! I felt like I was looking into a window as the story unfolded.
The story will stay with you long after the last page is read. A bittersweet book hangover. Bitter because the story is over but sweet because of the magic that was created in between the pages. If this is how Kylie Scott does YA then I want more!
As I said above the book is funny too. Here is something that had me laugh…..
“Unfortunately, I found it hard to care. I mean, what did it matter? Life went on; no one died as a result. The principle said it would go on my permanent record. Permanent? Please. Bullets were permanent. Everything else was temporary.”
5 stars!
I received an e-ARC from the publisher in exchange for an honest review. Review and blog tour can be found on *Milky Way of Books*
I’ve been a fan of Kylie Scott’s writing since the “Dive Bar” series, which is a NA. But seeing her writing a YA, I couldn’t be more excited to get the chance and review the ARC of this book!
“Trust” is about two different people, from different sides of life who couldn’t be more similar at heart. Edie is a unique mix of goodness and sass, who loves her body just as it is. She also gets bullied at school (something I deeply relate to), and after the events at the beginning of the book, she enrolls into a public high school.
John on the other hand, after all the rumors he has, tries to be a fine example of a student, get his head straight and tries not to get into trouble. As the two come closer together a bond fomrs.
The beauty of this book was the fact that Edie and John started as friends. The romance does not overshadow the plot and you have genuine teenage angst, friendship and heart-ache. I would love to see Kylie Scott try herself more into the YA writing! 😉
